SPORTS PARTNERSHIP Castor Primary School Dominate at Small Schools Tag Rugby

On Wednesday, 25 February, local schools participated in the Small Schools Tag Rugby event hosted by the Academy for the Sainsbury’s School Games.

Six teams participated in this, the first event of its kind, especially for smaller schools. There were school games qualification spots up for grabs so the event was full of passion, teamwork and determination to be the best.

Following a round-robin format, all the teams played each other in 7 minute games, refereed by Rugby Leaders to ensure fair play. All competitors had lots of fun and improved immensely with each game played. All competitors showed great respect for the leaders and their opposition with a weary hand shake at the end of each game.

Castor Primary School stole the show with both their teams taking the top spots and qualifying for the County School Games event in March.

Competition organiser, Mrs A Duff, said “The standard was high and everybody did their school proud. It was great to see these schools engaging in the Sainsbury’s School Games with such passion and enthusiasm.”

On Wednesday, 18 February local primary schools participated in the Year 5/6 Girls/Boys Sports Hall Athletics Event that was held at Stanground Academy.

Southfields, St Thomas More and Heritage Park had up to 15 boys and girls who participated in the event. Students had a lot of fun tackling both track and field events in their first taste of School Games Sports Hall Athletics.

Firstly the boys competed in the field events showing how they could jump and throw in events such as vertical jump, speed bounce, long jump and chest push, whilst the girls fought it out on the track in the running events over obstacles and at differing distances. After a short break the boys then took to the track events and girls tackled the field events.

Thank you to all the students and the schools who have participated. All students gave determined and passionate performances for their school in all the events however St Thomas More won on the day. They were closely followed by Heritage Park and both have qualified for County School Games Finals in June.

Stanground Academy student leaders, who gave up their own time to support this event, were thanked in the closing ceremony, along with the school games organisers, primary teachers and support staff, who brought the students to this after school event. With this support the event ran smoothly. Mr Aldous said,”Without the support of our experienced leaders events like this would be impossible to run. Likewise, it is wonderful to see the primary schools engaging in competitive events like the Sainsbury’s School Games.”

SPORTS PARTNERSHIP Key Stage 2 pupils at Gunthorpe attend training to become sports leaders at lunchtimes

Key Stage 2 pupils at Gunthorpe Primary School have become sport leaders for their peers at lunchtimes. Andrew Phillips, Partnership Development Manager at the Stanground Academy, trained the pupils so that they understood the principles of leadership and the important role they would play during lunchtimes.

The training was held over two mornings with 36 students complet- ing the training. They are now fully trained to lead sports activities at lunch time. Each student received a book of games and activities along with a cap to distinguish themselves from their peers so that they were Instantly recognizable. An area of their playground was coned off and they were then in charge of organis- ing the children and activities.

The sports leaders loved this opportunity to extend their current skills and widen their knowledge of how to develop skills in PE. One sports leader remarked;

“ I can’t wait to start leading at lunch times, it’s really exciting.”

SPORTS PARTNERSHIP Year 1 Multi-Skills Festival (Level 2 Sports Competition) at the Stanground Academy

Over 250 year 1 pupils from our family of primary schools attended the Stanground Academy for the Multi-Skills Festival. All pupils took part in 10 different multi skills activities all run by our Post-16 students who were a credit to the Academy and the Greenwood Dale Trust.

All the activities looked at improving pupils agility, balance, co-ordination and speed (ABCs) which are all key aspects to help them improve their performance in a variety of sports. The pupils worked really hard and had a huge amount of fun through out the festival.

Primary staff commented how fantastic the post 16 leaders were and how the pupils couldn’t wait to tell their parents how much fun they’d had as well as showing them their certificate from the day.

SPORTS PARTNERSHIP Heritage Park triumph in a tight finish at the yr5/6 Swim Gala

On the 16 Feb Heritage Park, Southfields, Folksworth, St Johns and Hampton Vale schools competed in the KS2 swimming gale at Stanground Academy. The event was organised by Primary PE Manager James Aldous with the help of the year 13 Btec leadership group.

The event was a huge success with all the races being extremely competitive, in some cases races there were only fractions of seconds between 1st and 5th.

Pupils scored points for their school in every race and due to the exceptional level of competition the final results where the closest we’ve had in a number of years. Only 5 points separated the top 3 schools. Heritage Park just piped last years champions folksworth by 1pt whilst 3rd place was picked up by Hampton Vale.

Staff and pupils alike enjoyed the event and commented how great the new swimming pool looked and were looking forward to next years event already.

For this age group this event is normally the first taste of inter school competition in tag rugby. They were first put through their paces in the morning, with drills and practices to prepare them for the tournament which was played that afternoon. Some teams were more experienced than others but whether they were experienced or first time competitors, everyone learnt new skills, enjoyed the competitive element and played with respect and determination.

Our hosts, Peterborough Regional Collage, provided their coaching and umpiring expertise. They were able to lead by example and be role models for the young competitors.

The tournament began with a two box round-robin format for the 10 entered teams who travelled from all across Peterborough to be at the event. There were four teams that qualified for the semi-final’s, including Castor, Orton St Johns, Heritage Park and Ormiston Meadows Academy. SPORTS PARTNERSHIP British Gymnastics Deliver an Introduction to Judging Course to Stanground Academy Young Leaders

On Friday, 13 March, Stanground Academy hosted British Gymnastics who delivered an Intro to Judging Course. Our Young Leaders may be used to refereeing and umpiring on the football and rugby field, however this was their first taste of judging gymnastics.

The Sainsbury’s School Games has always been well supported by British Gymnastics so competitions are happening frequently throughout the year. Confident young judges to support these events are difficult to come by, and as a result the Stanground Academy has started this program to train their own.

Ten young leaders, ranging from year 8 to year 13, attended the 3 hour workshop de- livered by Adam Scott. The course covered common gymnastic skills and shapes, what to look for, preparing yourself for an event, and how to judge fairly using video clips. This provided the perfect learning environ- ment for our young leaders to grow in confi- dence ready for the real thing.

On the 16th March, these young leaders judged at a primary gymnastic competition under the expert supervision of Kath Everett – Lawrence and April Williams at Spiral Gymnastic club. Their abilities and confidence grew throughout the competition and even our youngest leaders were enjoying the experience. Although the young leaders were extremely nervous beforehand they were a credit to the Stanground Academy and will no doubt judge at more events in the future. Our leaders have the opportunity now to pursue other gymnastic accreditations if they wish.

SPORTS PARTNERSHIP Oakdale and William De Yaxley triumph at the annual Minto/Ballentyne Competition

On Wednesday, 4 March, Stanground Academy cluster primary schools participated for the year 5 and 6 Minto/Ballantyne Trophies, competing in football and high five netball.

The Primary students get to compete at the secondary Academy’s sports facilities, some experiencing this for the first time. The competition was a round-robin format and the team with the most wins would have the honour of taking the trophy back to their school for proud display.

Stanground Academy’s young leaders were on hand to referee and umpire to ensure fair play. Once the whistles blew for the first matches the schools showed their deter- mination in wanting to take home the trophies.

The Hi Five Netball matches were of a very high standard; all schools showed great team work and a passion to win, whilst having respect for their opponent’s at all times. With a gruelling schedule there was not much time to rest. To win the match teams needed to score quickly and there was not a shortage of goals, only 2 matches ending in a no score draw.

Winning 4 out of their 6 matches, some ending in a score draw but scoring in every one and not losing any, Oakdale Primary School won the netball in style, closely followed by Old Fletton with 3 clear wins and only 1 loss.

The football, played on the Academy’s Power League pitches, saw a plethora of goals. Each team enjoyed playing in the professional environment.

The William De Yaxley Primary School showed their skills by winning 6 out of their 7 matches and once scoring 10 goals in one match alone., only losing to Gunthorpe Primary who came second based on goal difference.

Congratulations to the winning teams and thanks to all the Schools who entered.
