Te Awamutu cyclist Patrick Bevin has smashed the record for riding 160km around the lake during the 38th Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge. The Commonwealth Games cyclist won the Holden Men's Classic Race for elite riders in a time of 3h 40m 5s on Saturday. He was 2m 55s inside the old record set in 2008 by Te Awamutu’s Peter Latham. The Holden Men's Classic Race was one of 20 events held during the popular Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge. More than 7400 participants took part in all the weekend events. It is the second time Bevin has won the men's Classic race after taking out the title in 2009. Bevin, 23, rode in a lead group of four riders on Saturday before making a break with about 20km to go. He held on to his lead, crossing the finish line nearly two minutes clear of his nearest rival. Aucklander Mike Northey (3:41:53) fin- ished second, with Fraser Gough (3:41:56) from Havelock North third overall and first in the under 23-age group.
