Having been to Morocco in 2013 on my 1200GS, I found that off-road, and especially in the sand, the weight of the 1200GS was really hard work. Picking up the fully-loaded bike, with the weight of the full panniers and camping equipment, was almost impossible alone. The bike, as expected, was excellent on the road and on the hard-pack sections, but a handful on the loose stones and sand. However, I really enjoyed the adventure of travelling in Morocco. For the 2014 trip I decided to go for a smaller, lighter bike, and after a little research - and being a BMW enthusiast - decided that the F650GS Dakar would be a good option. Advantages included the 21” front wheel, it being 30 kg lighter, with enough power on the road - and good on the off-road sections. I searched the various web sites in France until I found a nice- looking bike within budget - well a little over budget - but you know what I mean! Then there’s fresh fruit, including the in- season pomegranates - very nice, but I’ve never really managed to eat them very well without the little seeds going everywhere, especially when sitting on a carpet with the table just thirty centimetres from the floor. One or two re-fuel from containers carried on the bikes. For the 650GS Dakar and the Ténérés we have well over 300 km on a full tank. Some are requiring fuel after 120/130 km. We set off and head west towards Zagorra, approximately 110 km away, with the last 30 km on a graded track. We make good progress on mostly solid hard-pack, stony tracks. The scenery is fabulous, like a lunar landscape, and no one around apart Evening feast in the dessert from our seven bikes making their way to Zagora. Ken had mentioned that he is very low on fuel, so Alistair and I ride with Ken. Sure enough, after approximately ten kilometres he slows to a stop. Neither Alistair nor I are carrying spare fuel, so out comes a tow-strap. I hook it onto the foot-peg of the GS and around the forks of the Yamaha 500. Now you may all have different ideas and methods to tow a bike, neither of us had done this before, but it worked well. After approximately ten kilometres Phil arrived. With his spare fuel can he got Ken going again for Zagora, where fuel stations are located. The tow-strap was really an afterthought to pack, but pleased I packed it. … It was to come in useful again later on in the trip. We found a place for lunch and enjoyed a Berber omelette and cold drinks. One or two took advantage of cashpoints and fuel, Table set and Hassan welcomes Keith from the dune and we headed south to M’hamid to find our overnight camping spot. The route was approximately 100 km, with a couple of passes to climb. The route was mainly tarmac, but with some stretches of graded road, due to roadworks for the creation of a new wider road. We all fuel up as tomorrow will be off- road again, from M’hamid to Foum-Zguid. We find a small area in the palm groves to camp, far enough off the road. Within ten minutes a local in a 4 x 4 arrives, offering us a better campsite with … “all facilities”. … We decline, as we have everything we need, and sometimes … “all facilities” … is not much better than wild-camping. Very soon all the tents are up, and the smell of cooking – well, OK, the addition of hot water to soups or dried meals - wafts in the air. One or two seem to be suffering with the heat and the Moroccan diet - so are in the tent early! Distance today (Day 7) – 240 km, 120 km on-road and 120 km off-road. Fully loaded 650GS Dakar on route to Zagora (To be continued.)

Because of all the upheaval in the VCR I as usual we had a good time, enjoyed the in attendance and people from all over the went to the rally with some apprehension company and did some good bike riding. UK making the effort to attend. but as it happened I need not have worried; Although the weather was not so good Friday was a good day out with a trip to St David’s; we went via a local farm where the farm owner was kind enough to show us his extensive collection of vintage and classic tractors (I am very tempted). The gentleman, sorry I have forgotten his name, does a lot for local charities and our group was happy to make a donation of £50 to him for the local hospital. We were made to feel very welcome and helped ourselves to the tea and biscuits provided. A Yorkshire man originally but has been farming in Pembrokeshire for over forty years and he hasn’t lost a bit of his accent. Suitably refreshed we made our way to St David’s cathedral, were Meyrick Reynolds had negotiated special permission for us to park our bikes within the walls of what remains of the Bishop’s palace; a stunning location and a great privilege to be there. So A nice GS a big thanks to Meyrick for a great day out. Friday evening we finished off with the traditional quiz which was a bit of fun. on Saturday the rest By Saturday a lot more people had arrived of the weekend could on site but the weather had completely not have been better changed so it was decided that a day out on and with numbers up the bikes was not on the cards, however as on last year it proved I had hurt my right knee badly a few days to be a successful before I was happy to rest up but I believe weekend. a few hardy folk did brave the weather and It was good to see ventured out. a good mix of bikes Saturday evening, we all met up for a

On a personal note, my daughters and my grandchildren were camping at the manor for the weekend and I really enjoyed watching my grandchildren learning to fish but it was good that we did not rely on their catch for our Sunday lunch. And it is good to see lots of families enjoying themselves at this event.

The Founders Day Rally at Stanford Hall

I have been visiting the Founders day rally for a couple of years now and it is nice to meet up with friends and even though it is a fair run for me from South Wales, I do enjoy the run up there, at least most of it. As always it was good show and is very well organised. The theme this year was ‘mods and rockers’ but just as I was arriving about fifty people on scooters were leaving; perhaps they knew something I didn’t. The BMW club stand appeared to have shrunk this year, I suspect the clubs either side of us had pinched some of our space but needless to say we were well represented and it was nice to sit and chat with in the sun. I did get an interesting picture of a WW2 BMW (photo on right) but I am not sure if they are club members. With regard to the journey there and back I mostly enjoyed it but the section from the west side of the M5, east over to Lutterworth seems to be very limited for choice and no matter which way I go I always end up on the motorway or urban dual carriageways. It seems to be that I always get squeezed between Birmingham and Coventry. Do any members know of some nice biking roads between Birmingham and Coventry; west of the M5 I am spoilt for choice.
