Dragons Manager/Coaches:
Luis Bolívar returns for his second season as Dragons manager after serving as the Dayton hitting coach in 2014-16. Bolívar played for the Dragons in 2003-’04, representing the club in the Midwest League All-Star Game in 2004. Bolívar played professionally for nine seasons from 2002-2010, spending all but the final year of his career in the Reds organization. He spent all or parts of four seasons at the Triple-A level, but never played in the big leagues. Bolívar resides in the Dayton suburb of Vandalia with his wife and four children. Following his playing career, he served as a coach at Vandalia-Butler High School. Bolívar was selected as the “Best Manager Prospect” in Baseball America’s 2017 Best Tools survey of Midwest League managers.
Pitching coach Seth Etherton joins the Dragons in 2018, his third year as a coach in the Reds organization. Etherton spent the 2016-17 seasons with the Billings Mustangs. Etherton pitched in the Major Leagues in parts of four seasons with the Angels, Reds, A’s, and Royals. He was the Angels first round draft pick in 1998 out of the University of Southern California. Etherton pitched in one game for the Dragons on a Major League rehab assignment in 2002.
Hitting coach Daryle Ward returns to the Dragons for his second season. He began his coaching career when he served as the hitting coach for the AZL Reds in 2016. Ward spent 11 years in the Major Leagues with the Astros, Dodgers, Pirates, Nationals, Braves, and Cubs. He belted a career high 20 home runs for Houston in 2000. He is the son of former MLB All-Star Gary Ward.
Bench coach Kevin Mahar returns to the Dragons for his second season and fifth year as a coach in the Reds organization. He spent the 2013-14 seasons at Billings and 2015 at Advanced-A Daytona. He worked in private business in 2016. Mahar played college baseball at Indiana University and reached the Major Leagues with the Texas Rangers in 2007.

Fastest of the Fast: On July 26, Dayton pitcher Hunter Greene threw a fastball against Fort Wayne’s Luis Campusano for a called third strike that registered at 102 mph on the TrackMan monitor at Fifth Third Field, breaking the stadium record for fastest pitch. Greene, Aroldis Chapman, and Aneurys Zabala had previously thrown pitches that were clocked at 101 mph.
Never, Ever, Ever: On May 22, Dayton’s Jeter Downs ended the first game of a doubleheader with a walk-off RBI single, then led off the bottom of the first inning in the second game with a home run. Downs had two consecutive Dayton at-bats on the same day (no other Dragons player batted between his two at-bats), driving in runs in both. Jason Stark of The Athletic checked with Elias Sports Bureau, the official statistics service for Major League Baseball, and found that, at the big league level, no player in baseball history has ever had two consecutive at-bats for the same team on the same day and recorded RBI in both at bats.

Schools in Montgomery, Greene, Clark, Miami and Warren counties are part of the program that includes 1,116 fourth and fifth grade classrooms in 183 schools over 48 school districts. About 34,000 children will participate. The program is in its 13th year in 2018. The Dragons MVP Program presented by Bob Evans Farms is also made possible by the generous support of CollegeAdvantage, Sinclair College, WDTN-TV and Dayton's CW. Due to the support of the participating sponsors, the program is completely free of charge to the schools.
How does the Dragons School MVP Program work? The teacher in each of the classrooms over a five-county area (Clark, Greene, Miami, Montgomery, and Warren) selects five MVP’s based on the teacher’s judgment of performance, effort, citizenship, and improvement. The five MVPs selected by their teacher in each classroom receive four tickets to a Dragons game, tickets to a special Field Day event at the stadium during the season, an MVP certificate and a Dragons MVP hat. Dragons players and mascots visit selected classrooms over the course of the season. Additionally, 16 Dragons games during the season are designated as “MVP Game Nights.” On those nights, one MVP gets to throw out the ceremonial first pitch to the game, another does an on-air interview during the Dragons game broadcast on Fox Sports 980, and another participates in an entertainment skit during the Dragons game.
Dragons Kids Club is Back For the sixth straight year, young Dragons fans can join the Frisch’s Dragons Kids Club. For just $15, members receive two Dragons lawn tickets, a Dragons t-shirt, a Dragons hat, a free kids mini-meal at Frisch’s Big Boy, and an invite to an exclusive Kids Club Movie Night.
