House Republican Leaders Applaud Historic Nomination of Dr. Brenda Thiam, PhD to the House of Delegates

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - House Minority Leader and House Minority Whip Kathy Szeliga yesterday enthusiastically welcomed the nomination of Dr. Brenda Thiam to the Maryland House of Delegates and the Republican Caucus. The Washington County State Republican Central Committee has selected Dr. Thiam to fill the seat recently vacated by Senator Paul Corderman following his appointment to the . The Central Committee’s selection will be forwarded to Governor Larry Hogan who will make the official appointment.

“We are so excited to have Dr. Thiam join our Caucus,” said House Minority Leader Nic Kipke. “She brings an endless supply of energy and enthusiasm to our Caucus. She has a strong sense of community and believes in bringing people together to solve the problems we face. Her background in special education will be of tremendous value as we look for ways to improve the education of our children during these times of great upheaval. I am confident she will serve the citizens of Hagerstown and Washington County well as an excellent legislator.”

Dr. Brenda Thiam has been a special educator for more than 20 years, working with children with autism in both private and public school systems. She successfully wrote a grant securing $100,000 for Washington County Public Schools to support professional development for educators of students with autism, intellectual disabilities, and significant learning challenges. Earlier this year, Dr. Chaim helped established Oasis Community Support Services, Inc., a nonprofit organization to support the residential and supported employment needs of adults with autism. Upon her appointment, Dr. Thiam will become the first black woman to join the Republican Caucus in the Maryland House of Delegates and the black Republican woman to join the Maryland General Assembly.
