EXPANDED 2020 NJ RACING JORDAN BRINGS HALL OF FAME CUTTING SCHEDULE INCLUDES DIRT HORSE TECHNIQUE TO BETTER TRANSITION by Diana Pikulski RACING AT MEADOWLANDS It seems there is no end to the number of scenarios where off-track Thoroughbreds can adapt and expand the scope of their abilities in second careers. With the number of horses coming off the track that need transitioning, and the ever-increasing pressure on the racing industry to be effective in placement, it=s important that the industry explore every avenue of effective transitioning and education of future owners/riders. Earlier this month, National Cutting Horse Hall of Fame trainer Doug Jordan put on a clinic at Long Shadows Farm in Cambridge, NY in training horses and riders on the basics of >cutting= using a flag. Cutting is an activity in which a horse and rider work together to maneuver a cow to a separate pen or place. Cutting competitions demonstrate the horse=s athleticism and mental agility. Cont. p4

The Meadowlands is scheduled to hold 19 cards next year and the racing there will feature dirt events for the first time since 2009. After holding Standardbred races only in 2010 and 2011, the Meadowlands resumed running Thoroughbred races in 2012, but the only surface available was the track=s grass course and the meets were typically limited to a handful of days. Monmouth Chairman and CEO Dennis Drazin has been pushing for a longer meet at the Meadowlands, one that includes dirt racing, for years. The sticking point had been the cost of converting the harness track to a Thoroughbred track, which is estimated at about $1 million. Drazin said that he and Meadowlands owner Jeff Gural have reached an agreement that covers the costs. Drazin believes that a stronger meet at the Meadowlands will help revitalize New Jersey racing, which was aided this year by a $10-million purse supplement from the state.

Dirt Racing at Meadowlands in 2020 cont. APerhaps I=ve been around too long, but I remember the days when we had a circuit and year-round racing here,@ Drazin said. AWe gave horsemen an opportunity to stay in New Jersey and participate here year-round. Obviously, that=s no longer viable with the closing of Garden State and Atlantic City. I am trying to give the horsemen what they want, which is a longer season and an opportunity to participate longer here. The Jersey breeders want it probably more than anyone else. You look at an industry and you want to provide people with an opportunity to succeed. A longer season is a part of it.@

Dennis Drazin | Equi-Photo Monmouth Park will race 56 days, opening May 2 and closing Sept. 27. The 2019 Monmouth meet consisted of 61 days. The Meadowlands will open Oct. 2 and finish up Dec. 5. There were just seven days of racing at the Meadowlands in 2019. There will be a total of 75 racing dates in New Jersey in 2020, seven more than 2019. Drazin is optimistic that the Meadowlands Thoroughbred signal will be a popular one. AIn my estimation, and people can disagree, I don=t think there is a really strong night signal out there at that time of year on regular basis that bettors can follow,@ he said. AThe night signal at the Meadowlands, if you do it right and build on it, it=s not going to be amazing year one, but over a five to 10-year period it can grow to a point where it=s a meaningful portion of our revenue scheme here in New Jersey. I think the night signal up there can be meaningful.@ New Jersey racing regulations give Thoroughbreds precedent when it comes to the Meadowlands fall dates. With Thoroughbreds all but absent over the last 10 years, the Meadowlands has built a strong harness racing stakes program during the fall meet.

Dirt Racing at Meadowlands cont. Gural said he is hopeful that the Thoroughbred faction will shorten the 2020 meet by a few days so that the Meadowlands can find a spot on the calendar for some of their major stakes. AWe=ve talked to Dennis about shortening the meet, which would allow us to have some stakes races,@ Gural said. AThe stakes races we have this weekend are important to us so we hope we can make a deal to shorten the Thoroughbred meet. We=ll see how it goes and reevaluate it after the year.@ Monmouth has also announced that the GI Haskell Invitational will be run July 18. That will mark the second straight year it has been held on a Saturday after traditionally being run on Sundays.

The flag is actually the face of a fan attached to a line along a wall or fence, and a pulley system that is operated by Jordan during the training to simulate the movements of a cow. The goal in having the clinic at Long Shadows was to include Thoroughbreds to show how well they took to the activity and what a great tool it could become for improving the rate of success in transition from racing to any second career.

Working a horse on a flag trains the rider to allow a better connection with his or her horse, and gives the horse more responsibility and freedom in the relationship. AThe flag is an excellent way to present something to the horse to develop that lighter level of communication that comes with connection between horse and rider,@ said Jordan. AI trained cutting horses my whole life and we use the flag to teach the horse to rate and measure something moving. The horse is interested in it and wants to engage in the activity. Because the horse is a willing participant, it=s just a nice way to get the horse to operate with less pressure and operate from a light feel. The change happens quickly.@ Among the riders at the Long Shadows clinic was Tim Jones of Godolphin. Tim is based in Saratoga Springs at Godolphin=s Greentree training center and rode Malibu Master (Malibu Moon), owned by ACTT Naturally, Inc., one of the three participating off-track Thoroughbreds. Malibu Master was joined by Fuhrious Warrior (Langfuhr), also of ACTT Naturally, ridden by Valerie Buck. I rode Maestro=s Legacy (Pavarotti), a horse I helped transition at my farm in New York. AAt Godolphin, we are committed to finding homes for our horses,@ said Jones. AThrough Godolphin Lifetime Care, we give away a number of horses each year to approved people who want to advance the horse in another discipline. Anything that we can do as an industry to better the communication between horse and rider, is critical. In that, we need more knowledge and understanding of the horses and how they think and operate. Having someone like Doug who has such a deep understanding of the horse and a method of putting people and their horses in a better frame of mind to grow together is an important tool for our industry.@ AI am interested in helping horses,@ said Jordan. ALooking at the life of a race horse and the change they need to make motivates me to help people learn, with just a little observation and understanding from the human, what a horse is capable of. The Thoroughbred is very intelligent and sensitive and for them, that connection and relationship with their rider is very important for their success.@ AAllowing the horse time to think and participate in what it is doing, makes a difference,@ said Jones. AFor our breed, their life on the racetrack is short and we need more ways to make better and more transitions to another life. I see Doug and his work as a way for us to accomplish this.@
