Written by Jonathan Casey Cover Illustration by Ben Hennessy www.m-opus.com Overture The music begins and we hear clips from early space missions, Gagarin, Apollo, Voyager. The music continues and we transition to ‘clips’ from future missions, space stations, an advert for domestic superconductors, a news broadcast from Mars Two colony, docking sequences. Narrator Speaks: “The year was 2187. We had already established thriving colonies on the Moon and Mars, on space stations and orbiting facilities, when a new discovery revolutionised everything; consumer-level superconducting power. Call it free-flowing energy. A decade of huge progress and excess. Amongst the billions of users, three young scientists were trying to make their own breakthrough in Bournemouth Labs Mexico.” Then we hear Miller McKee’s voice. He’s an Irish scientist, late 20s, working on an American project to invent teleportation. His colleagues Dr. Violet Vicefield and Dr. Jonah Ephgrave, late 20s, are both American. He records a spoken word report: Miller: “OK, Ministry Of Off-World Developments Teleport Research program here at Bournemouth Labs, this is report number 416, present are team lead Dr. Violet Vicefield, engineer Dr Jonah Ephgrave, and me, designer Mr. Miller McKee. I also enjoy long walks and watching the sunset while masturbating. Today is Sequence 20, it’s the big one folks, it’s April Fool’s Day 2187, but this is no prank. This evening, we make our first attempt to teleport a live human test subject directly from one discrete point to another, in this case, from the Teleport Gate Platform to the parking lot.

In saxophonist/composer Jason Robinson’s polydirectional masterpiece Tiresian Symmetry, he doesn’t seek to tell the soothsayer’s story. Rather for his seventh album as a leader, he’s gathered an extraordinary cast of improvisers to investigate the nature of narrative itself in a jazz context. The music’s richly suggestive harmonic and metrical relationships elicit a wide array of responses, but ultimately listeners find their own sense of order and meaning amidst the sumptuous sounds. For Robinson, a capaciously inventive artist who has flourished in a boggling array of settings, from solo excursions with electronics and free jazz quartets to roots reggae ensembles and multimedia collectives, Tiresian Symmetry represents his most expansive project yet. “I was attracted to the myth of the soothsayer, who tells the future even when it’s not welcome information,” Robinson says. “But on a more technical level I was intrigued by the numerical relationships.

It may seem trite to even address assembly of the instrument, but its been a common flaw not to develop good habits. I've seen broken mouthpieces, bent rods and necks several times from seasoned professionals who should have known better! This is precisely why its important to develop good habits when putting your instrument together. Prior to putting the mouthpiece on the neck, make certain that the cork is lubricated.

"TAKE YOUR IMPROVISATION TO THE NEXT LEVEL" • 10 SIMPLE TIPS • www.jeffcoffin.com • [email protected] 1. Where am I right now? Be honest with yourself, covering the basics. strengths & weaknesses. 2. Where do I want to be in the future? Timetables/Goals... 3. How do I get there? Developing lifelong practice habits. 4. Tradition...imitation vs. individuality. (“Follow the line, not the style.”) 5. Transcriptions and how to approach them. 6. Actively listening to music. How to do it. (see listening sheet) 7. Having your instrument be the piano/bass/drums and more!!! 8. Don't limit yourself to one style of playing or listening. 9. Using unusual expressive devices: multi-phonics, growling, alt. articulations, slap tongue etc. 10. Limitless Wonder. ("Can I really do that?") …THE GREATEST GIFT ANY TEACHER CAN GIVE YOU IS THE GIFT OF HOW TO TEACH YOURSELF… REMEMBER... You will not improve overnight in the way you wish you could. You will however have sudden bursts of inspiration along the way which will change the way you play. It is my belief that you must experience life to be able to express it. Being a better person will help you become a better musician. By examining and working hard on these ideas and concepts, you will become a better improvising musician. Keep working and striving toward something and through repetition comes magic. “You are never given a wish without also being given the power to make it come true, you may have to work for it however.” – Richard Bach/Illusions a great resource: Jamey Aebersold • Play-a-Long CD’s www.jameyaebersold.com More jazz related books than you could ever use! He was known primarily for playing in the bebop, hard bop and post bop styles from the early 1960s and on. His unmistakable and influential tone contributed to new perspectives for modern jazz and bebop In the pantheon of jazz trumpeters, Freddie Hubbard stands as one of the boldest and most inventive artists of the bop, hard-bop and post-bop eras. Although influenced by titans like Miles Davis and Clifford Brown, Hubbard ultimately forged his own unique sound – a careful balance of bravado and subtlety that fueled more than fifty solo recordings and countless collaborations with some of the most prominent jazz artists of his era.

James Harrison Moore, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2012 This study is a comparative examination of the musical lives and improvisational styles of jazz trumpeter Clifford Brown, and two prominent jazz trumpeters whom historians assert were influenced by Brown—Donald Byrd and Freddie Hubbard. Though Brown died in 1956 at the age of 25, the reverence among the jazz community for his improvisational style was so great that generations of modern jazz trumpeters were affected by his playing. It is widely said that Brown remains one of the most influential modern jazz trumpeters of all time. In the case of Donald Byrd, exposure to Brown’s style was significant, but the extent to which Brown’s playing was foundational or transformative has not been examined.
