Keyshia Cole Her Boyfriend and Best Friend Are Having an Affair, Something She’S Never Experienced
NOVEMBER 2012 ISSUE MMUSICMAG.COM when I think too much, I could be feeling something and not want to say it because of what people are going to think. When I drink, my emotions flow. So almost every night was a wild night—a debate night.” Although Cole has a solid, loving family life with her husband, NBA star Daniel Gibson, and their toddler son, she knows the album’s content may place her in the crosshairs of tabloid gossips that ache to connect the songs to her personal life. She considers the scrutiny a small price to pay for reaching out to fans with such songs as “Enough of No Love” and “Can’t Make U Love Me.” Cole had to change her writing and recording style to fully immerse herself in others’ pain, and admits the process was emotionally taxing. For starters, she’s not one to embrace collaboration with other S iren Digital 2 songwriters or producers. “I usually think, ‘Just let me work. I don’t need other writers or producers,’” she says. “This is the first time I sat down with writers in the studio, and it was a learning process. We’d sit there and say ‘I feel this,’ or ‘I heard that.’ If they were sharing something I’d never experienced, I was able to relate, to feel the pain.” One song, “Trust and Believe,” is about a woman who discovers KEYSHIA COLE her boyfriend and best friend are having an affair, something she’s never experienced. The R&B singer-songwriter learns the value “Still, I definitely feel if you’ve been hurt you of collaboration can feel pain from others’ relationships.” Cole hopes her fans can relate to her KEYSHIA COLE IS IN HER MANHATTAN Angeles and Cleveland where she wrote songs in the same way. -

The Cinematic Worlds of Michael Jackson
MA 330.004 / MA430.005 /AMST 341.002 Fall 2016 Revised: 10-7-16 The Cinematic Worlds of Michael Jackson Course Description: From his early years as a child star on the Chitlin’ Circuit and at Motown Records, through the concert rehearsal documentary This is It (released shortly after his death in 2009), Michael Jackson left a rich legacy of recorded music, televised performances, and short films (a description he preferred to “music video”). In this course we’ll look at Jackson’s artistic work as key to his vast influence on popular culture over the past 50 years. While we will emphasize the short films he starred in (of which Thriller is perhaps the most famous), we will also listen to his music, view his concert footage and TV appearances (including some rare interviews) and explore the few feature films in which he appeared as an actor/singer/dancer (The Wiz, Moonwalker). We’ll read from a growing body of scholarly writing on Jackson’s cultural significance, noting the ways he drew from a very diverse performance and musical traditions—including minstrelsy, the work of dance/choreography pioneers like Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly, and soul/funk legends like James Brown and Jackie Wilson—to craft a style uniquely his own. Crucially, we will ask how Jackson’s shifting public persona destabilize categories of gender, sexuality, and race----in a manner that was very different from his contemporaries: notably, the recently-deceased David Bowie and Prince. Elevated to superstardom and then made an object of the voracious cultural appetite for scandal, Michael Jackson is now increasingly regarded as a singularly influential figure in the history of popular music and culture. -

Is the Nordic welfare state viable -Embracingglobalizationandsharingrisks in conditions of globalization and ageing populations? What reforms Embracing globalization and sharing risks are needed? The Nordic countries have attracted much international attention in re- cent years. The school system in Finland has repeatedly been ranked the best in the world. The Swedish pension reform is a benchmark in the international debate. Danish “flexicurity” figures prominently on the policy agenda in the EU and the OECD. The economic performance of the Nordic countries has been impressive in comparative terms: rapid growth, high employment, price stability, healthy surpluses in government finances. The Nordics have embraced globalization and new technologies. Cross-country comparisons sup- port the view that the Nordics have been successful in reconciling eco- nomic efficiency with social equality. While successful in the past, the Nordic model is facing increasingly Andersen, Holmström, Honkapohja, Korkman, Söderström,Vartiainen Andersen, Holmström,Honkapohja,Korkman, serious challenges in the future. Globalization and the demographic transformation have major consequences for labour markets and the public sector. The viability of the Nordic welfare state as it exists today is put into question. This report offers an in-depth analysis of the Nordic model, explaining its key features and evaluating its performance as well as setting out its challenges. It examines many of the “quick fixes” put forward in public debate and explains why they are unrealistic or based on erroneous rea- soning.
