Slice of New Horizons History Series Dorothy Adland Parker Dorothy was first here in 1963 as a guest, playing golf on our brand new course as permitted by the sales office. Her first husband, Herb Adland, an agent for DeBeers industrial diamonds, traveled from New York. The inner circle was complete and priced at $17,500; but upper units (originally considered more desirable) cost $1,000 more and $5,000 extra to be on the golf course. In 1969 they bought and moved in. Ray Watts planned paddle tennis where the driving practice net is now. However, Chevron had a working well there so residents asked instead, for a tennis court. At first there were no rules for the court so her group wrote some. “Before that,” she remembers, “there was fighting with residents bullied off the court.” Dorothy also played golf with a club here, The Traveling Golfers. They shot at a new course each month and even traveled to Hawaii and various resorts. She was an avid bowler, too. At that time New Horizons had its own bowling league with a dozen or so teams playing each week. She was a committee secretary and served as Board Secretary. Need a Notary Public ? ? “I was on every committee at one time or another, except for the budget committee,” she recalls. She was a part of a Call Elaine Trovato at (310) 339-4568 Therapeutic Pool Club; they had pancake breakfasts, Mexican $ 10 per signature lunches and other events to raise to buy, install and New Horizons resident maintain our Jacuzzi. In that very Jacuzzi, after tennis, Dorothy met Bill Parker, her current husband of 30 years. Volunteers Needed for Meals on There were no garages then, only carports, and residents Wheels Delivery!! refused to pay to put them up. So Dorothy and Bill agreed Five days a week, volunteers deliver meals to with others in their immediate area to fund and install their house-bound citizens in Torrance and own 14 garage doors. After that, other residents saw them Lomita. Donating 1.5 hours per week of your time can make a difference! and realized the benefit of this pioneering endeavor, For more information eventually voting to add them condo-wide. Call 310-542-3434, or visit: When you talk to Dorothy, one thing comes across loud and www.TLMOW.ORG clear – that she loves New Horizons. “She was an inspiration with her devotion to the condo for so many years,” a neighbor told me “We all gained from how she served us.”
