February 2020 2 BELMONT SENIOR NOTES

Director’s Report As I am sing here wring you this report, it is midRJanuary, and I am taking note that it’s been the mildest first two weeks in January in my lifeme. I am pleased we have not had to close on account of storms or that seniors have, as of yet, not had to deal with ice, snow, and frigid temperatures. Sll, we can expect winter to wreak havoc at some point, so we need to stay vigilant and prepared. This month I would like to share with you some of the ways the COA board is working for you. Recent- ly the board took a great interest in the McLean housing development and how it could meet senior needs. The board strongly advocated that the development should include housing for longRme residents of Belmont who are low and middle income. The Belmont Housing Trust will be presenng the plans for that development here at the center on Feb. 21. Please see more in these pages about that presentaon. The board is also working to educate the community about the Center and how it meets the important needs of seniors. It will be publishing a report that will be sent out to all Belmont households. In it will be a review of what the Center has accomplished in its ten years of operaon and what to expect in the years ahead. We should also menon that the COA contributed a representave, Mrs. Maryann Scali, to serve on the Police Chief Search Commiee. As many of you know, the happy outcome of that Commiee’s work was the appointment of James MacIsaac as Belmont’s new police chief. Last, the board successful- ly advocated for the Town to install traffic calming measures by the entrance of our parking lot. There are a number of things we would like to draw your aenon to this month about the center facility. As those of you who come here are aware, there are three digital monitors where the old bullen board was located in the lobby. It has taken us a while to learn the new technology involved in using it, but we are now set to acvate the monitors which are there to publicize all our offerings at the Center, events around Town, and social resources that we deem important for seniors to be aware of. With the monitors, we are able to post much more than was the case with the previous bullen board. Our library is well ulized and well taken care of, thanks to COA administrave generalist, Kim Sliney. However, we were distressed to learn that all of the Harvard Health Bullens that we purchased for everyone’s benefit were taken and not returned to the library. Please take note that if we have a scker on the magazine saying “do not remove” we are asking this so that all can access the reading material. On a lighter note, we are hoping to make our speed dang event an excellent opportunity for people to meet each other, whether for romance or friendship. Please check inside these pages for details. Let’s work together to fight the winter doldrums this February. Weather perming, come on in into the Center when you can. The chances are excellent that the experience will brighten yours’ and others’ lives.
