Shabbat, February 23, 2019 - Adar I 18, 5779 Parshat Ki Sisa (Pg. 484) The Eruv is Up this Shabbat Torah Insights

“Thus shall the children of safeguard [ve’shamru] the Sabbath, to make the Sabbath throughout their generations as an everlasting covenant.” (Ki Tisa 31:16)

The Jewish people are commanded to safeguard the Shabbat by means of observing the Shabbat laws. The Ohr Chaim Hakadosh, Rabbi Cham ibn Attar, said that in addition to the simple translation of “to safeguard”, the word ve’shamru may also mean “to anticipate”. As the Torah (Bereshis 37:11) states by Yaakov after he heard Yosef’s dream, “So his brothers envied him, but his father anticipated [shamar] the matter [being fulfilled].” Consequently, the Ohr Chaim Hakadosh remarked that a Jew must not only observe the Shabbat, but must also anticipate its arrival. All week long we are instructed to plan ahead and await the arrival of Shabbat. Similar- ly, the Talmud rules that when encountering a fine portion of food during the week, it should be saved for the Shabbat in fulfillment of this precept of anticipating the Shabbat.
