AlthoughtheE65(7Series)introducedtheiDriveconceptitwasn'tuntilthelaunchontheE63(6 Series)in2003thatthefirstheadunitwasintroducedatBMWunderthenameCarCommunication Computer(CCC).Thisdevicecombinedthetunerfunctions(radio),navigation,speechprocessing, auserinterfaceandaDVD/CDdriveinonecomponent(forthefirsttimeinaBMWvehicle).Forthis reasonthiscentralcontrolunitwasreferredtoastheheadunit.WiththelaunchoftheF01(inthefallof 2008)the2ndgenerationHeadunitHightheCarInformationComputer(CIC)wasintroduced.
CICwasacompletelyrevisedcontrolconceptwithoneofthehighlightsbeinganintegratedhard drive,onwhichboththemapdataforthenavigationandamusiccollectionwithrelevantmusictrack ® database(Gracenote ),werestored.Numerousexternalreceivers(IBOC,SDARS)werealsogradually incorporatedintotheheadunithardware.BMWAssistandBMWOnlineweresupplementedwith GoogleSearchanddisplayedinthemenuBMWServicesorConnectedDrive(from03/2011).The ActiveVoiceRecognitionwasfurtherdevelopedandsupplementedwithaone-shotdestinationinput.

The3rdgenerationoftheHeadunitHighintroducedinJuly2012ispartofthemodelupgradeforthe 7-SeriesLifeCycleImpulse(LCI)aswellasforthe5-SeriessedanandGranTurismo.TheHeadunit HighwillalsobeinstalledintheF30hybridandF31asfromtheirmarketlaunch.
1.3.Newfeatures
TheCICuserinterfacehasbeencompletelyrevisedandupgradedwithafuturistic(3Deffect) enhancedperspectiveview.Thestructureoftheindividualmenusisnowshowninvirtualhigh resolutionwithenhancedgraphics.Thesymbolsonthesymbolbarshavebeenstandardizedand avarietyofmovementsandanimationshavealsobeenadded.Imagesofvehiclesandobjects (previouslyonlyvisibleintheOptionsmenu)havenowbeenintegrateddirectlyinthesubmenusfora moresophisticatedandultramodernlookandfeel.

Thehardwarewascompletelyrevisedandisnowequippedwithanew1.3GHzprocessor,1GB workingmemory,8GBflashmemoryanda200GBSATAharddisk.Andaswiththeearlier headunits,theflashmemoryandharddiskcannotbereplaced.
Themusiccollectionhasbeenenhancedandequippedwithnewfunctions(e.g.favorites).
TheUSBinterfaceinthecenterconsolecannowplayvideofiles,aswellasaudiofiles.Itisalso usedforimporting/exportingdataandupdatingnavigationmaps,astheUSBintheglovecompartment hasbeendiscontinued.
NewtotheIBOCisthedisplayofalbumartandstationlogos(theseareonlydisplayedifthestation providessuchcontentovertheHDdigitalsignal)
Withregardtotelephone/connectivity,themaintelephoneandadditionaltelephonearenow handledequallyforthefirsttimeandshowntogetherintheOfficemenu.TheComboxmedia wasintegratedintheheadunitcompletewithallfunctionsandinterfaces.Inaddition,theheadunit- supportedtelephoneservice(SA6NH)wasintegratedandhasmaderedundanttheuseoftheCombox media.
TheComboxwithtelematicsfunctionshasbeenreplacedwithitssuccessor,theTelematic CommunicationBox(TCB).
TheRearSeatEntertainmentsystem(RSE)wascompletelyrevisedandequippedwithnew hardware(RSEcontrolunitandnewrearmonitors)withnewfunctionslikezoning,servingfunction. ButthebigadditiontoRSEwouldbetheabilitytouseNavigationandsetdestinationsfromthe rearseat.F01vehicleswiththeZRPoption(RearEntertainmentPackage)willhavethecontroller integratedintothecenterarmrestofthebackseatwhiletheothervehicleswilluseawirelessremote control.
TheHeadunitHighisequippedwithamessagedictation"Speech-to-text"functiontoanswerand composetextmessagesandemailsdirectlyviatheiDriveandtheuseofaBMW“Tested”phone.A Voicememofunctionisalsoavailablewherevoicememoscanberecorded,savedtoaUSBorsent viaemailassoundfiles.

1.4.1.Streaming
Theprocessofdatatransferforaudioorvideofilesiscalled"streaming","livestream"orinbrief "stream".Thedatainthiscaseistransmittedviaradio.Thesignificantdifferencetotheradioisthat therethetransmitteddatacanbereceivedfromavarietyofreceivers.Inthecaseofstreamingapoint- by-pointconnectionbetweenthemediaserverofthesenderandthereceiverisrealizedforeachuser asperhisrequirements,etc.Inthisregardthecompletefiledoesnothavetobesenttothereceiver tostartplayback.Playbackcantakeplaceforthereceiverassoonasthetransmissionhasstarted. ExamplesforstreamingincludetheBluetoothaudiostreaming.
1.4.2.Codec
Codec(made-upwordfromEnglishcoderanddecoder)isaprocedure,whichcodesanddecodes dataorsignalsusingdigitalmeans.Videooraudiofilesarenotchangedduringcodingwithoutany loss,butadynamicreductionofthesignal,aswellasdatacompression,areperformed,whichresultin deteriorationsinqualitydependingontheextentandprocedure.Anexampleofthisistheconversion ofaCDdigitalaudiofile.wavtoacompressedaudiofile.mp3.Videofilescanalsobeconverted.An exampleofthisisa.movfileconvertedusingXviDVideocodectoMPEG-4videoformat.
Duetothedeclineinquality(whichisgenerallynotnoticeablefortheuser)wecanreducethe necessarybandwidthortherequiredmemorycapacity(example.wav70MBto.mp3approx.7MB).
Furthermore,itisimportanttomakeadistinctionbetweenthecodeddataformat,i.e.theaudioand videoformat,andthecontainerformat.
1.4.3.Container
Acontainerorcontainerformatisafileindigitaldataprocessingwhichcancontaindifferentfilesand filetypes.
Audio/Videocontainerformatscancontainatleastoneaudioandvideostream.Someformatsalso allowembeddingofsubtitles,menustructuresorothercontent.Acontainerformatisthusonlythe coverforthefilescontainedtherein.Ampeg-4container,forexampleaH.264codedvideo,canbe combinedwithaAACaudiooraXvidcodedvideocombinedwithMP3audio.Containersareabasic requirementforvideofiles,musicalsoexistsina"raw"version,i.e.withoutthenoiseofcontainers. Thecontentofacontainerisnotvisiblefromtheoutside.
