Denton ISD Campus Counselor Program

Campus guidance and counseling staff are often the first to identify and offer direction to school and community assistance services. Professional school counselors generally have a teaching background which gives them a thorough understanding of school related issues and the ability to relate well to teachers, students and parents. Coursework leading to school counselor certification is usually a part of a master's degree program which gives the counselor expertise in the growth and development of children and adolescents, multi-cultural aspects of counseling, group and individual counseling theories and techniques, student appraisal, career development, motivation and learning patterns, and social/ environmental issues surrounding learning. Counselors are trained to assist with problem solving for parents and students and schools. They often coordinate the referral process for community based services as well as in-school services.

Your school counselor is a knowledgeable professional who actively supports student learning through:

• Guidance Curriculum that organizes resources and integrates developmentally appropriate instructional components to address life skills needed by all students. • Individual Planning which focuses on particular needs of individual students with regard to educational, career, and personal goals. • Responsive Services providing support to students with identified concerns through prevention and intervention. • System Support linking the guidance program with the school and community.

For information on support services on your student's campus, contact the campus counselor for information, direction and support. 1 For general information, contact: Melanie Lewis, Director of Counseling Services at 369-0065 or email: [email protected]

** Please See Page 27 for Alternatives9 to Counseling ** A Word About Seeking Counseling Services…

Before seeking care for your family and/or child, remember that you are a consumer of counseling services and you have the right to ask questions. Here are a few you may want to consider:

• Is the therapist, clinic or hospital certified, licensed, or accredited to provide the services you need?

• Is your service covered by any benefits (insurance, employee assistance program, medicaid) you or your family may be entitled to?

• Is there a sliding fee scale?

• What happens when your benefits run out?

• What are the costs out of your pocket both as co-pay and when the insurance runs out?

• Is help available through the DISD Student Assistance Program in negotiating fees with an agency or provider?

• If you are having problems with your child, how much will the therapist or treatment center work with you? (The majority of change in children’s behavior comes about from changes in the parental response to the child’s behavior. If the therapist or treatment center does not work with you at least 50% of the time, change is unlikely.)

For psychiatric or substance abuse hospitalization, consider these questions:

• Have you investigated more than one facility? Programs differ regarding family involvement, length of stay, credentialed staff, weekend and evening programs, and after-care. A detailed plan up front and within 3 days of admission should be discussed for how the center will spend your in-patient hospital benefits both during and after treatment. Request a detailed, inclusive breakout for all of your expenses including out-of-pocket costs. Request this in writing. • What are the policies regarding coordination with the schools during and after treatment? • Can your child be taken out of treatment at your discretion? • Will the school counselor be included in the discharge plans? • What is the hospital’s policy regarding treatment and follow-up after the insurance is gone? Ask this at the outset of treatment. • Do you as a parent feel pressured to hospitalize your child? If so, then seek other opinions regarding this critical choice. 10 External Support Services

25 Counseling Alternatives

COACHING – ALTERNATIVE SUPPORT FOR FAMILIES

Coaching helps parents with: • Taking the fight out of school work • Encouraging the discouraged child • Becoming empowered and confident

Coaching is a strategy to help students with: • Chronic disorganization • Distractibility • Procrastination • Feelings of failure • Realistic goal-setting

Coaching helps families with: • Seeing situations from each others’ perspectives • Keeping family life as an important goal • Identifying new strategies for a peaceful home • Establishing family meetings • Creating mutual respect, cooperation and open communication • Finding effective discipline while keeping self esteem

Coaching is an alternative to counseling. The process operates through questions, accountability, and support. Students can learn to set manageable goals and parents can develop reasonable expectations. Coaching furthers the action by helping the student or parent see and then take the next step towards moving beyond roadblocks. Coaching focuses on promise, not problems, on the future, not the past. For younger children, parent coaching helps parents deal with everyday issues with love, care and effective discipline. Topics can range from potty- training, temper tantrums and sibling rivalry to how to deal with bullies, bedtime routines and developing confidence.

Coaching strategically addresses barriers to personal success both in childhood and adult life. Chris Gallup Ph.D. Adolescents, Parents, Adult Coaching Substance Abuse, Smoking Cessation, Mood/Anxiety Disorders Angry Family Relations 214-577-0492 [email protected]

30 For DISD Employees

If you or a member of your family answers “Yes” to any of these questions, help is available through the DISD Employee Assistance Program (EAP).

* Are others saying that you’re just “not yourself?”

* Are you reacting differently to routine situations or behaving unpredictably? Crying a lot or yelling at people close to you? Are you quick to anger, getting into arguments easily?

* Are you overcome with anxiety or a sense of fear, even though there seems to be no specific cause for concern?

* Do you often feel sad or blue, or simply dissatisfied with life?

* Are you using alcohol more than usual? And what’s usual for you? Have other commented on your drinking? If so, do you always have a ‘good excuse’ or get defensive?

* Are you using illegal drugs or abusing prescription drugs?

* Have you been taking pills to help you sleep? Or maybe to get started in the morning?

* Are personal problems causing strain in your relationships? Are you having difficulty with your marriage?

* Has your child been behaving differently—defensive, withdrawn or disinterested in family and school? Has he or she suddenly taken up with a different set of friends?

For general information about the DISD EAP, contact United Behavioral Health at 1-800-622-7276 or call Larry Mankoff at 369-0283 for information about Denton area counselors on the plan who can help with your problems. This program is a benefit for Denton ISD employees. All calls, referrals and cousneling are confidential. Your pursuit of help through this program is held in strict confidence. Funded in part through a grant provided by Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities. Revised for the 2005-2006 school year
