Administrative/Biographical History: The Adams Morgan / Lanier Heights Historic Resources Survey was sponsored and conducted by Meridian House International (now called Meridian International Center). Meridian International Center is located at 1630 Crescent Place, NW in Washington, DC. and is a nonprofit educational and cultural institution that promotes international understanding through the exchange of people, ideas, and the arts.

Meridian House International, as administering agency, recruited and hired an interdisciplinary team to conduct the project. All staff positions were part-time. The team included Mike Finnell (Project Administrator), Emily Eig (Survey Director), Katherine Grandine (Survey Team Member), Darnell Bradford-El (Community Manager), Dr. Marsha Jean Darling (Social and Oral Historian), Lucia King (Volunteer Coordinator and Community Manager) and Marilyn Zuckerman (Project Consultant). 2

Scope and Content: The survey project began in October 1989 as an effort to survey the potential historic resources located in the Adams Morgan / Lanier Heights area. The project area was bounded by the National Zoological Park and Harvard Street to the north, Sixteenth Street to the east, to the south, and and the National Zoological Park to the west.

Meridian House International administered this community-based project under a grant from the District of Columbia Historic Preservation Office. The project focused on informing the public about historic preservation, collecting local oral histories (including individual, business and organizational histories), and conducting a comprehensive area building survey.

The project design was unique, combining oral histories and a building survey, but only the oral history component of the project (Phase 1) was completed. Though land survey records are compiled in this collection (Phase 2), a study combining the two phases was never done.

All documents outside the collection bulk dates (1989-1990) are copies of published material and building permits.
