3 COMPOSER FEATURE Born in New York City in 1954, Jeff Klepper began playing the guitar at an early age and was strongly influenced by the folk music of Pete Seeger. In the early 1970s, he teamed with future rabbi Dan Freelander and formed the popular Jewish singing group Kol B’seder. Jeff’s compositions, many written with Dan, have become synagogue standards. Jeff was ordained as cantor from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in 1980 and was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Music from HUC in 2005. Jeff is a member of the faculty of Hebrew College in Newton, Massachusetts, and has served as cantor of Temple Sinai in Sharon, Massachusetts, since 2003.

Lehrhaus Adult Education Spring 2018 Mini-Mester 6:30pm: High Holy Day Cantillation, May 1, 8 Can you leyn Torah and trope? Interested in leyning during the High Holy Days at the Javits Center? Eager to increase your skills or brush up on the unique melodies of the High Holy Days? This four-session advanced course is taught by master CBST teacher and leyner Jack Greenberg. Participants must be proficient in either Torah or Haftarah trope. Registration is now closed.

6:30pm: The Synagogue: A Place of Worship in Time and Space, May 1 Archaeologists date the oldest synagogue to the 3rd century BCE. What does this structure have in common with our 21st-century centers of learning and worship? Have you wondered about the origin of the Ner Tamid or how layouts of the vary across time and place? Did you know that Sephardi synagogues have a different Aron Kodesh than Ashkenazi? In this mini-course taught by Miya Rotstein, explore these and other questions, look at decorative art and architecture, and examine historical texts and accounts that have influenced the Jewish House of Worship.
