Built for California Bank. one of the buildingsefirst tenants was Florsheim shoes. The ziggurat tower, char- acteristic of the Art Deco style, stresses verticalityr flattened pilasters break the building's horizontal dimensions. SIGNIFICANCE

20. Briefly state historical andloi architectural importance (include dates, events, and persons associated with the site when knownl:

By the late Twenties, Art D~COhad become the "style" for commercial buildings. As this structure illustrates, Art Deco was utilized for even the smallest buildings. Basically a horizontal structure, here thearchitect creates verticality through the use of Stepped vertical projections and vertical bands. The cornice is minimized Do deemphasize its horizontality. This structure is one of the few Art Deco structures in this area. Built for the DeMille Production Company, this building illustrates the desire of the industry to invest in Hollywood's thriving business economy of the Twenties.

SIGNIFICANCE Briefly state historical andlor architectural importance (include dates, events, and persons associated with the site.) Times-Mirror Corporation developed this entertainment complex between 1936 and 1939. Three of the four, a nightclub, a theater, and a restaurant were designed by noted Los Angeles architect Gordon Kaufman, who also desi@ed The Times headquarters at First and Spring in . The fourth, a market, was designed by Arlos Sedgley. The cost of the complex was substantial for the time--$175,000. 5955 was the Florentine Gardens, a popular night spot of the 40s and 50s. which featured the Paul Whiteman Or- chestra and the Mills Brothers. 5931 was a more intimate restaurant, the Palm Grill. The theatre at 5941, originally known as the Hawaii Theatre and the Music Hall, was to seat 1,200 and featured a novel interior which used "luminous black light." The theatre closed in 1963. This group of buildings is within two blocks of several other major theatres (the Pix, Panta~es,Huntington Hartford, and the Palace) and was an integral part of the theatre and entertainment district which was clustered around . The unified Moderne styling of the buildings is still noticeable, although al- terations have lessened the impact.

Description: The marked horizontality which characterized the Streamline Moderne style is apparent in this one story commercial building. Built as a restaurant, the building is constructed of reinforced brick sheathed with stucco. A raised sawtooth molding edges the flat roof, echoed by a stringcourse above and below the two broad, horizontal casement windows on the facade. The building steps back on the southwest, with the entry placed between two rounded corners. Although tall cedar trees and a new concrete block wall obscure the west elevation, a band of windows is dis- cernable. Simple but harmonious in design, the building has been altered by the block wall and by the replacement of the door. Construction Date: 1936 Architect: Gordon B..Kaufmann Builder: J. C. Description: Although altered, the Salvation Army building, once the Hawaii (Music Hall) Theatre, continues the Stteamline Moderne theme of the buildings in this row. The symmetrical facade is terminated on each end of the lower story by rounded bays of glass butted together with no metal jointing. Broad concrete piers support the second story overhang between the bays, allowing a deeply recessed entry of three aluminum framed glass doors. The sec- ond story is faced by a tall plain stucco falsefront, added in 1964. A metal cross, and the letters and insignia of the Salva- tion Army are applied to the central section, which rises higher than the sides. Banded at its lower edge, the second story also projects with 90° corners over the rounded bays on the ends. Built in 1939, the building is in good condition. A single palm in the sidewalk adds u vertical accent.

Architectural Style: Neo-Classical

Description: Described as "architecture resembling green cake icing" in a 1950 guide to Los Angeles, the Florentine Gardens is a two story, concrete restaurant. The pseudo-Neoclassical facade indicates a height of one story, although the slightly domed conut~ercial-type rooE indicates its actual size. Asymmetrical in its design, the facade is divided into five unevenly-sized bays by fluted Ionic pilasters. The pilasters rise to a plain entablature, above which a molded parapet shields the roof from view. Located in the second bay from the west, the entrance, a straightforward aluminum-framed glass door, is emphasized by a higher parapet, flanked by rusticated pedestals to which a wooden sign has been attached. With the exception of a small single door set into the second from the east bay, all of the bays are stuccoed. Flags raised on poles across the parapet add a festive touch to this much altered building.

SIGNIFICANCE 13. Briefly state historical andlor architectural importance (include dates. events, and persons associated with the site.) The theatre at 6025 Hollywood Blvd. was built by Hobart J. Beck, a Hollywood resident who lived at 7046 Lanewood, and was to be operated by Hansen Theaters after its comple- tion in 1926 at a cost of $70,000. Hansen and partners J. J. Carl and Alice Calhoun, a Warner Brothers star during the silent era, planned to invest $2,000,000 in the pro- ject, according to a arLicle published in July 06 1025. The design was to be "early California architecture" and included two stores on.the grovnd floor, along with the theatre auditorium. l'he liarisen corporation planned to have offices on the second floor. The building is still uwned by Hansen Properties. -!ust two blucks from the intersection of Hollywood untl Vine and located next to the Times-Mirrrir enter- tainment complex designed by Gordon Kaufmari, the theatre remains a part of the Holly- wood entertainment district which was an attraction to residents of Los Angeles and tourists alike.

SIGNIFICANCE 19. Briefly state historical andlor arch~tecturalimportance (include dates, events. and persons associated with the site.) Although this theatre has been remodelled, it continues co play a role as part of the Hollywood Boulevard theatre district. Originally built in 1927 as a legitimate theatre specializing in musical comedy, the Music Box, as it was known, was owned by the Bever-- idge estate, heirs of Daieda Wilcox, wire of Hollywood's founder. When not used for stage productions, it became a broadcast facility. A tiny restaurant, the Blue Palm Cafe, occupied the storefront at 6126 during the 40s and 50s, and was a popular tourist spot. Located just two blocks east of , the Music Box was one of five sig- nificant legitimate theatres, alung with the Palace, Huntington Hartford, and El Capitan, which provided theatregoers with Live dramatic productions, often featuring film stars. These houses, along with the flambuyant movie palaces of Hollywood Blvd., formed an en- tertainment district of exceptional quality and diversity in the 1920s, 30s. and 40s. The theatre district was popular with, tourists and residents alike. Most of the theatres remain today, although several, like the Pix, have been converted to movie houses'.

20. Briefly sate hinorical and/or uchitectud importanw (inckrdedates. acnts, and pernn..noc*ted with the sit^ when known): The fantasy which surrounded Hollywood Boulevard in the 20's and 30's was due in large part to the different styles of architecture the merchants of the business district used to enhance their image. While financial institutions and large office buildings tended to prefer classical styles that promised stability and security, smaller retail establishments looked to ocher European styles which seemed to exude s'ophistication and 'chic'. One such style was the French Chateauesque style, of which this building is an example. Not massive in scale, it nevertheless played a role in enhancing the image of the Boulevard as a tasteful, sophbticated shopping area. The building is one of only four in this style, thereby making the style very rare in this locale. The architect, H.J. Knauer,.bad been practicing in California since 1921..

Walker and Eisen, respo~lblefor a number of buildings on or near the ~ouleva'rd,was the .largest and most rruccessful architectural firm in Los Angeles during the 20's and 30's. SIGNIFICANCE 19. Briefly state historical mdlor architectural importance (indude dates, events, and ps~mmosiatd with the site.) The Palmer ~uildi& is one of two four story office buildings constructed in the 1920s on blocks owned by Edwin 0. Palmer. a surgeon and historian of Hollywood's development, and Harlan Palmer, a judge who was the editor of the Hollyvood Citizen-Xews. These cousins were instrumental in several institutions and enterprises during the prime period of IIollywood.'~ development. The building's west facade hints at the character and quality of the orizinal. which must have been one of the most imposing structures on this section of the Boulevard at the time of its construction. Along with its counterpart at 6368, the Palmer Building was a precursor of the Classical Revival height limit financial institutions of the 1920s which are an integral part of Hollywood's skyline. From 1922 to 1931, the building was the home of the Hollywood Citizen, a prominent local newspaper.

It was erected in 1912 on the site of the first real hotel in the Caluenga Valley, the Sackett Hotel. The original two story building was commissioned by the directors or the Hollywood Xational Bank. About the time of its completion it was bought by J.P: Creque, a director of the bank. The original building was designed in an undistinguished "Mediterranean" style. At the time of erection it .was constructed to hold two additional stories. These two stories were added and the building completely re- modeled by B.B. Homer in 1931. The remodeled building is an unusual example of Art Deco style executed in a fine buff-colored brick with colored tile trin. Tnis building is the only brick-clad Art Deco building on the boulevard.

Erected in 1927, this clock was constructed as a landmark by William Stromberg to indicate the location of his jewelry store. Once frequently found in Los Angeles and Hollyvood. street clocks are now quite rare. Orfginally this clock had a different head but vandals removed it. A fence was later erected to protect the clock. This clock is a rminder of the past, when pedestrians were more frequently found. It serves as a landmark and provides added visual interest to Hollywood Blvd.

Briefly kib.the pmsent physical appcarancs of the siw ormcturn and describe any major~terations'fmmis original condition: The Hillview Apartments is a four stoh "Mediterranean" apartment building. Originally the building was U-shaped with a courtyard between the extensions. The courtyard has been replaced by one story shops. The facade is divided into three different bays. The two side bays are considerably more narrow than the center, bay. The corners of the side bays are rounded. They also have windows set between colossal pilasters which reach from the first to the fourth floor where they reach a heavy bracketed cornice. Also, the side bays have low green-tiled hipped roofs. The center bay has a flat roofline which was originally surrounded by a balustrade. The remains of colossal vilasters on the center of the building mark the location of the original entrance. The building is concrete and bri. ck -- covered in part with stucco. Behind the elaborate Hollywood Boulevard facade, t he large unadorned stuccoed brick apartment building extends, curving slightly on the Hud son Street side, to conform to the street /configuration. a Approximate propsty size:

It is the last surviving single family dwelling as: well as the last Victorian structure on Hollywood Boulevard, a vestige of the days before the Boulevard was zoned connnercial. All other residential structures are in full blown Colonial Revival style, in contrast to this synthesis of the late Victorian Queen Anne and soon-to-be fashionable Dutch Colonial Revival. The Janes Sisters, Carrie, Mabel and Grace started the Kisaes Janes Kindergakten School in 1911. Mabel had attended the Froebel Kindergarten Association in Chicago and was a pro- ponent ofthe same system which is credited with influencing Frank 's early work. In later years the school was expanded to include education through the ninth grade. Except for rainy days, the classes ver+ held outdoois undzr .: " trees. Briefly state hinorial andlor architectural imp- (inJude dates, -no. and persons -ted with the when known): One of a number of Newberry's stores built in the Art. Deco style, it is the earliest example of the Art Deco style on Bollywood Boulevard. The design of the facade utilizing tile is an exception, not the rule, for this particular style. The coloristic effects, the original lettering and th'e overall beauty of the design make this an outstanding contribution by an anonymow master designer. The'structure is edged between two other significant structures, a Moorish commercial structure to the east and to the vest a New York Art Deco style commercial structure. lhis provides a high contrast that makes this block one of the most fascinating on Ilollywood Boulevard. On top of the J.J.Newberry buildingis a large flashing neon Coca Cola Sign. This sign is similiar to the sign seen at Times Square in New York City. An impressive sight at night, this sign &llilncea the'Bollywood' character of the boulevard. . . .. : ,.
