@ TSCPL How to download and use ebooks from the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library

Note: Use these instructions with a PC or Mac, a Barnes & Noble Nook Simple Touch, Kindle Touch, , or other simple ereader device. Other devices and tablets such as the Nook HD or HD+, Kindle Fire, iPad, Windows Surface, or smart phones use the OverDrive Media Console app. To use ebooks on those devices, follow the “OverDrive App for Apple, Android, & Other Devices” instructions in a separate document.

You will need:  A TSCPL library card  A personal computer with an internet connection and speakers or headphones  software—instructions for installing on page eight. The Kindle does not use this software.

1. Access the Library’s econtent website

Go to TSCPL’s Digital Branch http://www.tscpl.org/

Select Download It on the top menu, which drops down a submenu.

Under Download It click on the eBooks image icon

Note: In this section, you can also click on Direct Links: OverDrive ebooks & audiobooks to go directly to the and audiobook catalog. You can also set up an appointment with a reference librarian to get individual assistance in the Ask a Librarian section.

2. Sign in with your TSCPL Library card.

Before you start browsing for , sign in with your TSCPL library card. You can log in during check out too, but doing it now will save you steps later on.

Click the “Sign in” link at the top of the screen.

In the first box type the entire barcode number from the back of your card (with no spaces).

In the next box type in your four digit PIN (for most customers it is the last four digits of your phone number).

Now you need to find something to check out! There are many ways to search for specific materials, including author, title, narrator, etc.

You can also browse for materials using the categories at the top of the page.

There are also options to search through various featured collections. These options are located below the browsing option box.

Quickly sort ebooks while browsing using faceted searching

When you are browsing titles, use the filters on the left side to quickly limit and sort ebooks by title, subject, format, or by those titles currently available. This screen shot example is filtered by Format, Subject, and Star Rating.

Limit Searches and Browsing to only available titles

You can quickly find titles that are available by limiting the search or browse by selecting “Only titles with copies available.”

Also, in “Advanced Search,” simply, check the box that says “Only Available Copies” and then search to get a list of all the ebooks currently available for check out.

4. Select Materials to check out

Once you find an item, click “Borrow” to check out the item and begin reading.

After you click “Borrow,” OverDrive provides you two reading options.  Read Immediately through OverDrive READ  Download and then Read

Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library Page 4 www.tscpl.org (785) 580-4400 February 2014 OverDrive READ allows you to read the ebook with one click using your computer or device’s web browser. To simply read the , click on “Read”

There is no authentication or any other steps.

Click and read.

Note: Some titles are not available in the READ format. Check under Available Formats.

OverDrive Read works in Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, and Safari.

Once the ebook is open in your browser, turn by clicking on the left or right sides of the screen.

You can bookmark the page using the tab on the top left.

There is also a main menu on the right side with many options to skip ahead in the ebook, look at the table of contents, change font size, etc.

2. Download and Read If you prefer to download the ebook to your computer or device, after clicking “Borrow,” select “Download.”

A list of possible formats will appear.

Select the format you need and click on “Confirm & Download.”

Different devices use different formats.

 For all non-Kindle devices and the OverDrive app use the “EPUB” format

 For Kindle devices, except when using the app, use “Kindle” format.

The Download process is different for Kindles than other devices. Skip ahead for information on downloading from your device. Remember that any device that uses apps will need to use the “OverDrive App for Apple, Android, & Other Devices” instructions.

KINDLE: For detailed instructions on downloading to a Kindle go to Page Six (6).

OTHER: For detailed instructions on all other devices, including a PC or Mac, the Nook Simple Touch, Sony Reader, Kobo, etc., go to Page Eight (8)

Downloading to Your Kindle

1. Confirm & Download

After clicking on download, select the “Kindle Book” format and click on “Confirm & Download.”

A new internet tab or window will automatically open to Amazon.com. You will finish checking out and transferring the ebook to your Kindle from Amazon.

If you are not logged in, you will be prompted for your Amazon account information.

After the Amazon webpage opens, make sure the book shown in Amazon is the same book you selected from the Library’s website. Then, click on ‘Get library book.”

Warning: If you are already logged into Amazon, the next step, number 2, is different. The option to choose a transfer device, will appear under the “Get Library Book” button, instead of on another screen

2. Transferring the ebook.

After logging into Amazon you will be asked on which device to deliver the ebook. Select the device you want and click “Continue.”

Note: You can register multiple devices through your Amazon account. For example, the Library’s account has an iPad, an Android based cellular telephone, and a Kindle. All of these devices can have an ebook transferred to them!

The final screen confirms your checkout. If you have a wireless connection, the actual transfer to your Kindle or other registered device is automatic.

The next time you sync your Kindle or other device, your econtent will be available.

Note: An active Wi-Fi connection is required for wireless delivery to a Kindle device.

If your Kindle is not Wi-Fi capable or you do not have an active Wi-Fi connection, click on the “Download now” button to download a copy and transfer it to your device via USB. Managing Your Kindle Ebooks from the Library

Once the items are checked out and on your Kindle or other device, you can manage them through Amazon’s “Your Digital Items” page.

Log into Amazon and in the upper right corner there is a link to “Your Digital Items.” In the Kindle section, there is a link to “Manage Your Kindle.”

The “Manage Your Kindle” screen lists all of the items in your Kindle library, including those checked out from the Library.

Use the “Action” button next to each item, to return items early, delete them from your device, download again, transfer, or purchase.

1. Download and install Adobe Digital Editions (if not installed)

FIRST TIME ONLY STEP: If this is your first time on your home computer, you will need to down load and install the Adobe Digital Editions software on your computer before you can use the service.

If you already have ADE on your computer, skip to step 2

There are several places to locate a link to the Adobe Digital Editions software. The easiest is to scroll down to the bottom of any page and click on “Software.”

On the next page, click on the “Adobe Digital Editions” download.

You will be taken to Adobe.com where you will select and download the version of Adobe Digital Editons you need for your computer.

After you install the software, you should activate it with an Adobe Digital Editions ID. (This is REQUIRED if you are going to transfer book to an E-Reader device).

To activate Adobe Digital Editions using an Adobe ID…

Open Adobe Digital Editions. The 'Setup Assistant' dialog box is displayed.

Follow the on-screen instructions to set up your free Adobe Digital Editions account.

The 'Authorize Computer' screen is displayed.  In the appropriate fields, enter the email address and password for your Adobe ID. If you do not already have an Adobe ID, click 'get an Adobe ID online' and follow the instructions to sign up for an Adobe ID.  Click 'Activate'. Your computer is activated to your Adobe ID.  Click 'Finish' to close the 'Setup Assistant' dialog box.

Adobe Digital Editions should open up and display your ebook for you in the reading view. Now you can read the book in Adobe Digital Editions on your computer, laptop, or net book.

2. Confirm & Download

Once you have ADE installed, go back to the library’s ebook catalog.

In “Account” select “Bookshelf.” The Bookshelf is a list of all the ebooks you have checkout.

Find the ebook you want to download and click “Download.”

After clicking on “Download” button, select the “EPUB ebooks” format and click on “Confirm & Download.”

A dialog box will pop up asking you if you want to open or save the file. Either will work, but clicking on “open” will save you a step. Click on “open” and the file will download.

3. Open ADE & Transfer the Ebook

Adobe Digital Editions should open up and display your ebook for you in the Reading View. Now you can read the book in Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) on your computer, laptop, or net book.

Transferring Files:

You can transfer your ebook to a portable reading device such as a Sony Reader or Nook. If you are in the Reading View, click the “Library” icon in the upper left corner of the ADE screen.

This will take you to the Library view. You can now see a list of all the ebooks you have borrowed in your “Bookshelves.”

To transfer the ebook you will need to attach your portable reader to the computer using the USB cord that came with your device.

Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library Page 11 www.tscpl.org (785) 580-4400 February 2014 Once you have plugged in your ereader, a new section called “Devices” will appear in the left hand column of the Library view. The icon for your reader should appear in this section with its name next to it, in this example it is the NOOK.

To transfer your ebook to your device, drag and drop the book icon from the Bookshelf onto your reader icon in the “Devices” section.

Click on the book icon with the left button of the mouse and hold it down. Move the mouse toward the icon of your reader under “Devices,” in this example NOOK. An outline of the book cover should appear to move with the mouse.

Move your ebook until it is right on top of the icon and name of your reader, in this example NOOK.

A green plus sign should appear when you have moved the ebook into the correct position. Release the left button on the mouse. This should “drop” the ebook into the reader and you should see a brief “transferring book to reader” message.

Once the transfer is done the book should be loaded onto your reader and you will be able to view it on your reader for the remainder of your checkout period.

(NOTE for Sony Reader users: You MUST have the Sony Reader Library software on your computer for this to work with the Sony Reader. This should be included with the materials you got when you purchased your Sony reader, or it is available from ebookstore.sony.com)

4. Returning Items Early and Other Features

By right clicking the book icon in the Library View, you can:

 open and read your ebook  delete the ebook file  return your ebook early—this is the only method to return an ebook early

If you click on your ebook reader icon under “Devices,” you will see the items that are stored on your ereader. This is where you can remove ebook files from your reader that you no longer need.

When you are done, close Adobe Digital Editions, disconnect your ereader, and you should be ready to enjoy your ebook on your reader.
