Easter Sunday, April 21, 2019

My beloved parishioners, Christ the Lord is risen today, Alleluia!! We rejoice at the resurrection of our Messiah as we sing the Alleluia, the Gloria, and ring the bells again in our liturgies. I am truly grateful to all our liturgical min- isters and volunteers who worked so hard to ensure that we all enjoy a spirit-filled liturgy during the Holy Week. The mystery of our salvation has been played out in an intense way and it was beautifully inspiring! We commemorated the Last Supper, the institution of the Eucharist, on Holy Thursday when we also washed the feet of some parishioners reminding us that we serve Christ in serving one another. Christ gave himself for us by dying on the cross, but this act of giving was already done at the Last Supper when he said: “Take and eat, this is my body given for you.” On Good Friday we recalled the crucifixion and death of Christ on the Cross. We venerated the cross and prayed for the intentions of the entire world. The death of Jesus on the cross was not the end. Death did not have the last laugh. On Holy Saturday, we kept vigil for the resurrection of the Lord and celebrated the most blessed night of all nights. We were blessed to receive into the Catholic Church those who have been preparing for the sacraments of initiations during the year. On this Easter Sunday, we celebrate the joy of the risen Lord because Jesus Christ over the grave and death has no more power over him. Because he lives, we will also live, and we can face tomorrow. This day is the most important Sunday of the year and every Sunday is meaningful for Christians because of the resurrection of the Lord. The early Christians in the Roman Empire referred to Sunday as “the Day of the Sun” just like any other person in the empire at the time. However, this day had a deeper meaning for the Christians. It was the day on which the rising of the “Sun” reminded them of the glorious rising of the Son of God from the dead. The Catechism of the Catholic Church says: “Easter is not simply one feast among others, but the "Feast of feasts," the "Solemnity of solemnities," just as the Eucharist is the "Sacrament of sacraments" (the Great Sacrament). St. Athanasius calls Easter "the Great Sunday" and the Eastern Churches call Holy Week "the Great Week." The mystery of the Resurrection, in which Christ crushed death, permeates with its powerful energy our old time, until all is subjected to him.” (CCC, 1169) The resurrection is what makes Sunday the day of the Lord for Christians. Keeping this day holy is very important and it is not to be done once or twice a year but every Sunday. If we desire to live forever in light and love, we must share now in the new dawn of the Lord's Resurrection. Those who were really touched by the mystery of Christ’s resurrection became his witnesses. The women and the apostles went about pro- claiming to everyone that Jesus had risen and that he had touched their lives. We read in our gospel today that our patron Saint Mary Magdalene was the first to witness the empty tomb (John 20:1). The risen Lord Jesus appeared first to Mary Magdalene in Mark 16:9. As parishioners of St. Mary Magdalene, we are called to imitate our patron saint. We must seek for Jesus and rec- ognize him when he appears to us. We must also be ready to spread the word that Jesus has risen to everyone. As we celebrate this day of joy, let it not just end here in the church but let us go out to share that joy with the world. MSP Priests’ Annual Meeting: Pray for all priests of the Missionary Society of St. Paul working in the United States this week as we gather in Houston for our annual meeting (April 22-26). You are invited to join us for the closing Mass of the meet- ing that will be held on Friday, April 26th at 6:30pm at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, 2508 Clay Street, Houston, TX 77003. Spring Carnival: Our 2nd Annual Spring Carnival will be on Saturday, April 27th from 11AM to 6PM here on our church grounds. It promises to be fun for the whole family. There will be carnival games, bounce houses, Mind Winder carnival ride, and many more attractions. There will be a Classic Car Show this year. We will also have silent auction, themed baskets and other items. You will also have opportunity to win a grand prize of $4,000 Visa Gift Card with your purchase of raffle tickets of $5 per ticket or $20 per 5 tickets. The proceed of this carnival will benefit our St. Mary Magdalene Catholic School. Volun- teers are still needed. Please contact Eddie Greene at [email protected]. Thank you for supporting this important ministry of our parish. Next Sunday is Divine Mercy Sunday. In addition to the regularly scheduled weekend Masses, we will celebrate the special Divine Mercy Hour with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and recitation of the Chaplet of Divine Mercy at 3PM in the Church. Please join us for this special celebration. Let us all trust in the mercy of Jesus and show mercy to others too. Jesus, I trust in You!

HAPPY EASTER!! Fr. Felix I. Osasona, MSP Pastor

Breaking Open the Word for Families for Easter Sunday/Resurrection of the Lord By Ginger Herrington • Reading 1: Acts 10:34a, 37-43 God anointed Jesus with the Holy Spirit and Power. St. Peter preaches the Good News to the people of Jerusalem, reminding them of the facts of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrec- tion. No one had ever come back, whole and healthy, from the dead, to eat and drink and teach. Peter then relates the commission that he and the other apostles received from Jesus: to testify that Jesus was the Messiah foretold by the prophets. Believe this Good News. Everyone who believes in Him re- ceives forgiveness in His Name. • Reading 2: From the Second Letter of St. Paul to the Colossians 3:1-4 Seek what is above. St. Paul reminds us of what is most import- ant: our eternal life. While our bodies die, our souls will live forever – either in Heaven or in Hell. I know where I’d rather spend eternity! Seek to follow Christ; live His Great Commandment: love one another. See Jesus in everyone you meet and you will treat them with love. St. Teresa of Calcutta broke it down very simply: You did it to Me. Live hidden in Christ and see the hid- den Christ in everyone you meet. When Jesus appears in glory, we shall be with Him if we have lived on Earth as if we were already in Heaven with Him. • Gospel: John 20:1-9 They saw and believed, although they did not yet understand. Today we hear of Our Lord’s Resurrection; and the patron saint of our church, St. Mary Mag- dalene, is the first to discover the Empty Tomb. Look up at the beautiful Resurrection window above the altar; see Mary Magdalene approaching Jesus’ tomb. Jesus stands behind her, ready to surprise her with His Presence. Let’s follow our patron saint and look eagerly for the Lord; let’s be ready for the wonderful things He has in store for us. The disciples saw the Empty Tomb and believed that Jesus was risen, even though they did not understand how. Faith is accepting God’s Word although we are too small to understand His ways. Jesus is risen: Alleluia!

Our Pope Speaks Through your joyful witness and service, help to build a civilization of love. Show, by your life, that it is worth giving your time and talents in order to attain high ideals, it is worth recognizing the dignity of each human person, and it is worth taking risks for Christ and his Gospel. -Pope Francis, July 28, 2013
