Procedure for processing your appeal

When the Admissions team receive your appeal form it will be recorded and then passed to the clerk of the Independent Appeal Panel where arrangements will be made for your appeal to be heard. Your appeal must be heard within 40 school days from the closing date or 40 school days after being lodged if the closing date has passed. Therefore, it is possible that your appeal hearing might be delayed if it is received during school holidays or near to the end of a term.

Once an appeal date has been set, the clerk of the Independent Appeal Panel will request the Admissions team to provide a statement which explains why no further students can be admitted into the year group of your preferred school.

You will be invited to attend the appeal hearing and you are strongly advised to do so. However, if you are unable to attend your appeal can be heard in your absence. You will be sent a copy of the statement, along with your appeal date, at least 10 school days before the appeal hearing takes place in order that you can prepare your case.

At the appeal hearing an officer representing your preferred school will present the statement to outline to all parties the reason why more children cannot be admitted to the school. You will then be given the opportunity to state your case as to why you believe that your child should be given a place at your preferred school.

If a large number of appeals have been received for your preferred school then all the appellants may be invited to attend a group hearing so that the Presenting Officer can present the case for the school to all appellants and the panel at the same time. However, you will still have an individual appointment so that you can present your case to the panel.
