The National Eagle Scout Association has selected Eagle Scout Joshua Lintner and his “Milkweed for Monarchs” Greenhouse at Calavera Hills Middle School. This project will provide for the ongoing education for this school’s 5th grade classes in the lifecycle of monarch butterflies and the cultivation of their food source and habitat. The Butterflies have been dwindling in population since the 1980’s by 97%, mainly due to population growth expanding and threatening the natural grown milkweed in the area. This milkweed and butterfly program supports the ongoing ecological project, and the greenhouse created in the Eagle Scout Project will provide ongoing facility for plant growth for many years.

On February 13, 2020, Luca Panzeri, age 8, tried to awaken his mother, Sara DeCorato, when she did not respond to her alarm clock. When his mother would not arouse, Luca immediately notified his father, Stefano Panzeri. Mr. Panzeri also tried to awaken Sara and realized that something was wrong when he noticed her perspiration. Luca reminded his dad that his mother kept a “magic pen” in the refrigerator (glucagon given for low blood sugar in diabetes patients). Mr. Panzeri asked Luca to call 911 as he proceeded to give Sara the injection. Luca called 911, giving a report to them regarding his mother’s illness, and left the phone with his dad. Then Luca went outside to wait for the paramedics and led them to his home. As the paramedics entered the home, Sara started to regain consciousness. They instructed Luca’s mother to eat breakfast, assessed her again, and left. Sara recovered with no further side effects. Luca Panzeri used the first aid skills he learned in Scouting to help save his mother! For that let us honor him for receiving the Lifesaving-National Certificate of Merit!

Transition thought – Philferd by Robby Wright In 1963 a boy joined Troop 32 in the Hollywood Wilshire district of . He worked his way up to First Class and in 1964, he was elected to take the Ordeal in the . He tried to get involved, but being rather short for his age, he had a hard time with all the older Scouts in the OA. He did get involved with the Dance Team. One day, Phil Ford, was the advisor of Shoshone Chapter, Siwinis Lodge. He was affectionately known as Philferd, the way his name sounded when said very fast. He asked the boy why he wasn’t going to the 12E Conclave. The boy kind of gave him a blank stare, and Phil encouraged him to sign up. Phil said he would pick him up with a bunch of other OA members after work on Friday. They would spend the night at his house with his wife, (Phil’s children had moved out long ago, but he kept on with Scouting). On Saturday morning, they arrive in Santa Barbara at the University for the Conclave. Phil made sure that all of the members from the chapter participated. He introduced the young Scout to the dance competitions and a couple of classes. He always encouraged and rarely said: “don’t do that”, but let the Scouts find out for themselves whether or not they could do it. The young Scout had a good time and got his first Conclave patch, a 4” beauty with many colors, which was rare in those days. As time when on, the young Scout flourished and became a regular member of the dance team, participating in over 50 dance performances and providing ambiance for the tap out ceremonies. He had a good time, learned to work with others to accomplish goals and made quite a few friends. He went on to become the dance team advisor when he was in his twenties and eventually the Chapter Advisor. Because of Phil Ford’s encouragement, this Scout went on to a long career in Scouting, still trying to repay that kindness. I know this story because I was that Scout. I still have that patch. Phil’s guidance was a turning point in my life. I would encourage you be a Philferd to some of the Scouts you work with. It will always be treasured.
