GARDENING IN LAKELAND, FL For this month's newsletter I thought it would be interesting to talk with resident's about their vegetable you can see scattered around the park. has several health benefits and is a great hobby to take up in retirement if you haven't done it in the past. The reward of fresh vegetables is partnered with the health benefits of flexing and stretching exercise, mental stimulation, and socializing with the people who walk by while you putter around outside. It can give a person great satisfaction to look out the window or around the yard and see healthy green with tasty vegetables growing on them. Louis Bouffard grows several types of vegetables (and flowers, but that is a subject for April!) despite being a “snowbird”. He grows tomatoes, green and yellow beans, green onions, green sweet peppers, radishes, peas, cucumbers, and lettuce. Louis selected the lot to move his home onto based on great gardening prospects: lots of sunshine and no near neighbors to block that sun. His gardens are scattered around the property with some alongside the house, along the driveway, in front and along the properties fenceline in back. Flowers are mixed in with vegetables both for their beauty and to provide insect and pest protection. Planting basil between tomato plants and marigolds around the tomatoes protects them from pests along with enjoyment of the flowers and herbs. Louis and Alice usually arrive the last week of November and he heads for the beds almost first thing to clean up the leftover vegetation and grass clippings that accumulate, weed and turn over the beds to get everything ready for seeds and plants. The first few years he mixed in a couple bags of garden soil in the 5' x 20' bed each year. Now he usually mixes in bone meal to provide the nutrients lost from the heavy rains we see over the summer. Louis also his vegetable scraps back into the garden beds to feed the plants. He recommends using crushed eggshells around the lettuce to keep the slugs away and around the tomatoes to provide calcium that helps prevent blossom end rot. Many of the flowers Louis grows come from seeds saved from flowers he grows in their northern home in Quebec province just south of Montreal. He plants the seeds as soon as the garden beds are ready and has flowers by the middle of January to enjoy for the months he and Alice are here each year. He says the secrets to a great garden are soil prep, selection, and . Protecting the plants by covering them when frost warnings are issued also keeps everything growing throughout the winter. For those of us used to growing plants during the summer only, the idea of growing them in the winter seems odd, but that's Florida gardening! Arnie Johnson uses organic methods in his garden because Linda has chemical sensitivities and her doctor recommended eating as much natural chemical-free food as she could find. Using small strips alongside his house Arnie has been successful in growing several types of vegetables even in the small strip between his house and a close neighbor proving that Florida's sun is strong enough to power plant growth even when the plants don't receive more than a couple of hours ...continued on page 2 Page 2 Hickory Hills Happenings BIRTHDAYS of sun (as long as that sun is noonday sun). Using a liquid fish fertilizer and organic potting soil that he amends the 01 Mike Burgess beds with each year, the plants are green and healthy as 02 Joe Ziegler you can see from the picture of two cabbage plants he has 03 Joyce Brush grown over the past few months. 04 Jim Kellogg Look closely at the base of one 05 Lorraine Watson of Arnie's cherry tomato plants 06 Frank Cannizzo and you'll see a tube sticking 07 Mary Ellis up out of the soil. He uses these Barbara Olmstead tubes to pour water and liquid 11 Nancy Burgess fish fertilizer directly down to 12 Eddie Hendrick the roots of the plants getting the Jane Hunter nutrients where the plant needs John Hutchinson them and not feeding weeds on 13 Kenneth Merget top of the ground. A year-round resident, Harold Watkins Arnie starts planting mid- to late-October and grows 18 Angel Canales tomatoes, cabbage, banana and sweet peppers plus a few Nancy Smith experimental varieties each year. By the end of May the 19 Helen Harrower weather is getting too hot and wet to grow vegetables and 22 Cathy Lamb he will clean up the beds for next season. Beth Wamsley New resident Chyrl Grubaugh on Palamino Way Ruby Williams started right away to clean up and plant about nine garden 23 Barb Mattern beds around her home. She is a gardening pro from Ohio 25 Sandy Guiffra who wants to continue her hobby here in her winter Mary Iles home. She also digs in potting soil to amend the sandy 26 Wayne Iles Florida soil and uses both manure and Miracle Grow 27 Yvonne Hagenbuch to provide nutrients to the plants. She is starting with 30 Alice Koslouski tomatoes, squash, eggplant and green beans. Reporting Bill Waldorf good growth in the month she has been here, we wish her 31 Denise Richard good luck with her veggies! ANNIVERSARIES Joe Sherman has tried container gardening with a couple of tomato plants this year, planting them about 02 Ron & Jane Ferguson mid-October, and has harvested several tomatoes 15 Dick Pask & Missy Bouse starting in late January. His container bed is a four foot 17 Carl & Carol (Racette) Liberty high 2'x4' bed about 18” deep that he filled with good potting soil. When choosing a business to do work on your home it is important to consider all the factors. Sometimes the cheapest option is not the best. Keep these tips in mind the next time you choose a service provider, especially a roofer. How Many Years in Business? This demonstrates expertise in the field. If a warranty is involved it shows the company’s ability to stand behind it. If a company has been around for a long time, it is probably for a good reason. Who Is Doing the Actual Work? Does the company use subcontractors or their own employees? Employees tend to me more reliable because the business owner holds them accountable day-to-day versus subcontractors who can come and go. Consider More Than The Price! A roof is a durable product meant to last for years. When it comes to durable goods for your home like roofs, air conditioners, windows, etc. who installs them can be an important factor. Remember the old adage “Good work isn’t cheap...Cheap work isn’t good...”
