Hello and welcome to September’s Diary. There’s much to read this month about our community. We start off on the front page with news of the recently formed Hillend Community Hub. We wish them every success with their projects. Then the Community Council has reported that The Dalgety Community Trust has been formed to take over the ownership of the CC owned town centre land and three community woods – excellent news. Kim has reported on the success of the beach cleans he has been heading up. Thank you to all the volunteers who have got involved and I look forward to hearing more about Kim’s initiative to make Dalgety Bay plastic free. Read all about it in the Beach Clean article. I hope you are pleased to see the Diary back after the summer break. See you next month. Roy

Beach Clean at Barnhill Bay gets Shell on board Some 20 volunteers of all ages turned out on Sunday 7th July to help us remove plastic waste from the beach at Barnhill Bay, along the bottom of Aberdour golf course. Even though at first sight the beach didn’t look too bad, we still picked up 60 kg of plastic waste, much of it microplastics. We also surveyed a 100 m stretch of the beach, recording no fewer than 82 cotton bud sticks, 105 packets/wrappers, 150+ plastic/polystyrene pieces and large amounts of fishing net - not to mention the ubiquitous nurdles. We are particularly grateful to Shell for helping with the beach clean and agreeing to adopt Barnhill Bay for regular cleaning. We now have a growing army of volunteers covering the entire coastline from there to St David’s Harbour. Shell are also looking into ways of removing some heavy-duty items from around the terminal. It was nice to hear from participants that they are noticing the impact our efforts have had on the shoreline around Dalgety Bay - thanks to all our volunteers for their great work. In the near future, I intend to launch an initiative to make Dalgety Bay a plastic-free community. I am currently liaising with Plastic-Free Dunfermline to decide how best to go about this. Watch this space and our Facebook page for more information. In the meantime, if anyone thinks they might be interested in participating, please do get in touch.
