STRIKING WITH AN ELBOW

• In recent weeks the tribunal has imposed suspensions of six matches and seven matches on players convicted of striking with an elbow. In 1989, a player was suspended for ten matches for a similar offence. Two of these three players had clean records.

While the 1989 case involved a blow aimed at an opponent's head the other two penalties were imposed upon players who, while not specifically aiming at the head, swung an elbow backwards in the direction of, and intending to make contact with, a tagging player whose close presence was known. In these circumstances, a defence of "accident'' simply cannot succeed. Equally doomed is that (frequently-advanced) defence to elbowing (usually after disposal) which claims that the raised elbow was just as inadvertent, action In trying to hip-and-shoulder a playel"ill. possession of the ball. The tribunal firmly rejects the idea that "hip-and-shoulder'' includes the elbow.

As two of these abovementioneil cases have highlighted, elbows which forcefully come in contact with the head are capable of doing terrible damage and no player should have to run onto a football field contemplating that he may be carried off to face weeks, or months, sidelined with head Injuries induced by an errant elbow. For this reason, the range of penalties imposed in the cases mentioned above can be taken io be representative of the minimum (subject to the reported · player's record and the force of any blow found to have been struck) which the tribunal will continue to impose for such offences. Any player who swings his elbow in the general direction of another player, intending some form of contact, does so at his own peril. )

I • • Apart from a sound knowledge of the laws and their c9rrect interpretation, fitness plays a major part in the success of an umpiring performance. . ..· .

Training occurs two nights per week under John Reid's direction at Chatswood Oval on Tuesday nights and Erskineville Oval on Thursday evenings com mencing at 5.30pm. A range of training routines· are undertaken by field,. boundary and goal umpires, Including umpiring skill activities on a Thursday evening.

Bi monthly a 4km time trial takes place at the Sydney Athletic Field, in Anzac Parade, Moore Park. Umpires strive to lower their times with a sub 14 minute time being a pre-requisite for A.F.L. senior and reserve select!on.

The next time trial which· is run in groups commences at 6.00pm on June 21, and footballers are most welcome to attend to pit their fitness level against the •men In white•. If players/clubs are interested in participating they could call me at the League Office or show up at 5.45pm on June 21.
