Charles became an apprentice architect for a company in Glasgow. He enrolled in evening classes at Glasgow School of Art in the 1890s. His talent grew and he won prizes for his work, including an award that allowed him to take a tour of Italy to study the architecture. Charles also met three friends at the School of Art. The group became known as ‘The Four’. They were Charles, James Herbert McNair, and the sisters; Margaret and Frances Macdonald. They produced new art and designs which became known as the ‘Glasgow Style’. In 1899 McNair and Frances Macdonald married. Charles married Margaret Macdonald the following year. Background 1.1 STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. STEM is not just the collation of individual subjects, rather it represents a key driver for the development of the interdisciplinary skills and knowledge across the subjects. 1.2 These skills are at the heart of the development of Scotland’s Young Workforce and of Glasgow’s future economy and prosperity. Developing an understanding and knowledge of STEM is also important to all of our daily lives and it is essential that we support our young people to become scientifically and digitally literate citizens 1.3 The Scottish Government launched its STEM - Education and Training Strategy at Jimmy Dunnachie Family Learning Centre in Pollok, reflecting the sector leading work taking place in the city. 2. STEM Glasgow 2.1 STEM Glasgow consists of a Principal Officer for STEM, a STEM Development Officer (Secondary Technology teacher) and a Primary Science Development Officer (Primary teacher).     October 28, 2016 For immediate release Phil Tufnell special guest at Glasgow Hospice’s Sporting Lunch Pictures attached – credit: Elaine Livingstone Former cricketer Phil Tufnell was the special guest at The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice’s Sporting Lunch today at Doubletree by Hilton Glasgow Central Hotel. “I’m delighted to be here today to support Glasgow’s Hospice,” said Tufnell, a team captain on BBC Television’s A Question of Sport and regular reporter on The One Show. “It’s a fantastic cause, doing wonderful work to care for patients and families at such a difficult times in their lives. “I’m delighted to hear that work has now started to build a new hospice and urge the people of Glasgow to Buy a Brick and back the fantastic Brick by Brick Appeal.” The annual event has been running for more than 10 years and in that time has made more than £250,000 for Glasgow’s Hospice. Peter Martin played host to a room-full of 400 sporting mad hospice supporters. They listened to Tufnell’s tales of life on and off the cricket ground, including his career in the media. “It has been a fantastic day and we are delighted that so many people came along to hear Phil Tufnell speak,” said Heather Manson, director of fundraising at Glasgow’s Hospice. The hospice still has £2.4million to raise to reach its £21m target to build a new home in the city’s Bellahouston Park. Work has now begun and patients are expected to move in 2018.
