58465-The Circuit Sep-Oct11.indd 20 9/8/11 7:31 PM TOMMY HAMM SR. CANCER CENTER WELCOMES ANDREW WEBER, M.D. The Tommy Hamm Sr. Cancer Center is pleased to welcome Andrew M. Weber, M.D. to their practice. Dr. Weber joins Medical Direc- tor, John Nanfro, M.D., F.A.C.P., and Hassan Ebrahim, M.D. as the third Hematologist Oncologist in their Lynn Haven center. Andrew, as he prefers to be called, received all of his medical training in Pennsylvania but still refers to New Jersey as home. Admittedly, the beaches here were a great lure, but it was the opportunity to work in an environment treat- ing a diversity of types of cancers that led to his fi nal decision to relocate. There was never any doubt in Andrew’s mind about what he wanted to pursue with his education and says he fi nds it impos- sible to imagine himself being anything other than a doctor. Very early on in his training he knew that oncology was to be his chosen fi eld of study and admits he ‘fell in love’ with treat- ing cancer patients. A good oncologist, according to Andrew, means bringing the patient on board with their treatment. He views this as not a doctor-directed plan, but a team effort which includes the pa- tient along with their family and caregivers in addition to their doctors. At the Tommy Hamm Sr. Cancer Center, the three doc- tors also meet weekly to discuss their patients and are available to each other daily if needed. Dr. Weber completed his Hematology and Medical Oncology fellowships at Drexel/Hahnemann University in Philadel- phia, PA, where he also served as Chief Fellow. His Internal Medicine residency and Chief Resident year were completed at Crozer Chester Medical Center, and obtained his MD at Temple University School of Medicine. He is board certifi ed in Internal Medicine, and board eligible in both Hematology and Medical Oncology. Dr. Weber has served as a Hospital- ist at various institutions in the Philadelphia area, and has enjoyed both administrative and teaching responsibilities in his young career. In his free time, Andrew enjoys community service-related activities, sports, and playing with his English bulldog, Bauer. We are pleased to welcome Dr. Weber to the group, and promise to continue providing our patients with innovative and compassionate cancer care. alypso Resort & Towers garners top honors as recipient of the 2011 Ex- Cpedia® Insiders’ Select award, an an- nual designation presented to the world’s best hotel and resort properties on Expedia.com. Positive guest experience, excellent value and input from Expedia’s team of hotel ex- perts helped Calypso clinch its coveted spot on this year’s ranking by the world’s largest online travel agency. Out of 130,000 hotels and resorts listed on Expedia.com, only 500 hotels are deemed Insiders’ Select 2011. Eligible hotels for 2011 were ranked with a numerical score in each of three categories, independent of advertisers and partners. A major factor in this year’s awards, verifi ed guest reviews for Calypso Resort & Tow- ers refl ected high levels of satisfaction in the areas of service, cleanliness, room comfort and Calypso’s ideal location on the white sand of Panama City Beach. Recent fi ve-star ratings spotlight comments such as, “Can’t wait to go back,” and “Best in Panama City Beach.” Calypso was also cited for its affordable value. Nightly rates start at $139 for a one-bedroom resort condominium with full kitchen and pri- vate balcony overlooking the Gulf of Mexi- co. The property’s family-friendly amenities allow travelers to stretch their vacation dollar. Guests enjoy free Internet access, unlimited DVD rentals, children’s activities, two beach- front resort pools and poolside Tiki Bar. Fam- ilies can soak up the sun on Calypso’s private beachfront, with complimentary beach chair service and onsite watersports like parasail- ing, banana boat rides and jet ski rentals. THE AMERICAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE EXECUTIVES (ACCE) con- ference is a fantastic learning and relationship-building event, attended every year by chamber executives around the country. Held in Los Angeles in early August, this year was no exception. The following is a summary of three exemplary keynotes who touched the crowd with their fervor, charisma and originality.

The job market was nonexistent, so he had to make a survival decision. Combining his wife Leslie’s art, design and business ex- perience with his own business management background, it made perfect sense. Both are college graduates, Leslie in Art; Dennis in business. Leslie owned a design business and managed art galleries for several years. Both also have a passion for art and a great sense of what customers are looking for. The business was incorporated and the retail space was selected (Breakfast Point Market- place next to a thriving Publix) just before the BP Oil Spill in the Gulf. They decided to go forward, largely based on the confi - dence they had in the leaders of Panama City Beach. They were not disappointed. The doors opened without fanfare on Sep- tember 13, 2010, and the fi rst customers ar- rived; some had even been waiting for the doors to open. The Browns joined the Pan- ama City Beach Chamber and held a grand opening on October 14, which was a great success. “The Chamber has been most help- ful getting the word out, and the networking results have been huge,” says Leslie. The marketing plan was the next big under- taking. Their challenge was when to market to which customer. There are the locals, winter guests, spring breakers and summer tourists. The Brown’s plan included local newspaper ads, local TV spots, community involvement, local networking groups, and charity events aimed at gaining the locals’ trust. Dennis and Leslie gave personal pre- sentations at fi ve different resorts, held gal- lery events with guest artists, and hosted tea and pasta tastings which appealed to both the winter guests and the locals. The Browns feel the fi rst two years are always a challenge, but so far it has surpassed expec- tations. “The Small Business Development Center has been a wonderful resource for the Blue Heron Fine Gifts,” says Leslie. “We contacted SBDC in February of 2010, when we fi rst formulated our thoughts about start- ing our own business in Panama City Beach. We were referred to Johnny Branch for a free business consultation. What a wonder- ful stroke of luck! Johnny not only had the knowledge to direct us through the necessary steps to open our business, he also had the day to day hands on experience of running a suc- cessful business.” Branch gave the Browns direction on prepar- ing their business plan, and offered numer- ous suggestions for setting short-term and intermediate goals. He also directed Leslie through the set-up and use of Quickbooks and Point of Sale software. But the Browns agree that beyond all his help, Branch’s moral sup- port has been the biggest treasure. “We are so thankful that Joe Chavarria has given Johnny full support to provide whatever we needed,” says Leslie. “We’ve become much more com- fortable in the bookkeeping and accounting of our business, and I am very pleased that I can still call on SBDC for continuing support as we fi nd need.” ™ ™ ™ ADVERTISE in the next  FREE Hearing Evaluations.  AAdvanced digital designs for clarity CIRCUIT! After Hours, Chamber D.I.N.E., Lunch & Learn workshops, 12@12 Lun- cheons, Ambassador lunches and meetings enable you to connect with other members, hear from movers and shakers in our com- munity and state, and learn new ways to grow and enhance your business. Partici- pation in Chamber Committees is another way in which you can add value to your membership experience. Connections holds quarterly Member Roundtables to provide a forum for Cham- ber members to give their input on what programs are working for them, and/or how they can be improved. This is an open dis- cussion where your ideas, suggestions and even complaints can be heard in an envi- ronment of cooperation and consideration. Your valuable insights will help our Cham- ber better serve you as we work together to accomplish our mission and goals. Read your weekly Beach Buzz for the next Connections Member Roundtable. Partici- pation is limited to the fi rst 20 registrants, so call the Chamber offi ce at (850) 235-1159 and speak with Catherine to make your res- ervation. Help us help you to connect with an exciting and prosperous future!
