Thanks to an initiative of Israel’s leading music institutions and the Polish Institute in Tel Aviv, Israeli audiences had an opportunity again to meet Krzysztof Penderecki.

In the 1980s, the breath of forthcoming developments was already eroding the ossified organism of the communist giant, but a few more years had to pass for the sick empire to collapse like a house of cards. Poland, with the Solidarity movement, played the leading role in this historic process. In the same year when Lech Wałęsa’s biography was published in Hebrew in Israel, Krzysztof Penderecki, who was already a world-famous composer, wrote his monumental “Polish Requiem,” a musical expression of Poland’s 20th-century history, a history of suffering, death, occupation and armed bids for independence. Maestro Penderecki is well-known in Israel. He has visited the country several times, always causing a big musical stir and attract- ing great interest. The Israelis are still impressed by “Seven Gates of Jerusalem,” the famous oratorio he composed to mark the end of the Second Millennium. The composer began his international career in 1959 at the War- saw Autumn festival, but it was “Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshi- ma” that brought him real fame. The premiere of “St. Luke Passion,” a religious composition, was a major musical event in Poland in 1966. His “Christmas Symphony” of 1980 and several later compositions had a similar character. In recent years, Penderecki has increasingly relied in his compositions on romantic and a bit more conserva- tive forms. This is clearly noticeable in the famous “Cello Concerto No. 2” (1982) and “Credo” (1997-98). Krzysztof Penderecki was born in November 1933. He celebrated his 80th birthday with us in Israel. During his latest tour of Isra- el he gave concerts in Tel Aviv, Haifa and Jerusalem, delighting the audiences and critics alike. We would like to wish the Maestro long years in health and further success. We are waiting for more meetings with him.

The series of Krzysztof Penderecki’s concerts was preceded by the showing of the film “Polish Requiem” in Tel Aviv’s Cinematek. The audiences had an opportunity to see this interesting film thanks to the initiative of the Polish Institute in Tel Aviv and its director Krzysztof Kopytko. This event, another one organized by the Institute as part of its activity promoting Poland and Polish culture, again aroused great interest.

Krzysztof Kopytko became director of the institute two years ago. Within a short time he managed to establish important professional and personal contacts with people representing local cultural institutions and Israeli artistic communities. He has graduated from Polish and foreign universities. He has specialized for many years in cultural and political problems, including those within the European Union. In 2003-2005, he held a high post in the Ministry of Culture and in 2005-2009 was a member of Poland’s Permanent Representation to the European Union. From 2009 to his arrival in Israel he was head of the Department for Programmes and Projects at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Warsaw.
