Duke Energy and Boeing are also on this list despite these entity’s public declarations in January aimed at their customers and shareholders that were pausing all donations for a period of time, including those to members that voted against certifying the election. The leaders, companies and trade groups associated with these PACs should have to answer for their support of lawmakers whose votes that fueled the violence and sedition we saw on January 6. The positive impact of increasing vaccination rates and decreasing cases of COVID-19 are clear to see. Businesses are open, sporting venues and cultural institutions have welcomed back fans and visitors, and restrictions have been lifted. On June 11, Washington D.C. fully reopened and lifted the restrictions put in place to stop the spread of COVID-19. Unfortunately, the United States Capitol and the People’s House have failed to do the same. The Capitol remains closed to the American people and the House continues to maintain policies that run contrary to science of COVID-19. It is time for you to reopen the House and get back to serving the American people. Weekly case numbers in the United States have reached their lowest point since March of 2020 at the very start of the pandemic, and every day hundreds of thousands of Americans are being vaccinated. This also holds true for the Washington D.C. metropolitan area and the Capitol Hill community specifically. Over the last two weeks cases are down 36% in Washington D.C. and over 40% in both Virginia and Maryland. On Capitol Hill, no congressional staffer is known to have tested positive in weeks and no Member of Congress is known to have tested positive in months. This can no doubt be attributed to the institution’s steady access to vaccinations.

    Rare Disease Congressional Caucus

    Join the Rare Disease Congressional Caucus The bipartisan and bicameral Rare Disease Congressional Caucus is led by Representatives G. K. Butterfield (D-NC) and Gus Bilirakis (R-FL), and Senators Roger Wicker (R-MS) and Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) to promote awareness of rare disease issues. Background: There are over 7,000 rare disorders that together affect more than 30 million Americans and their families. Rare or orphan diseases are defined as diseases affecting fewer than 200,000 people in the United States. Many rare diseases are considered ultra-rare; some affect fewer than 100 people. Rare diseases include rare cancers, tropical or neglected diseases, genetic diseases and many pediatric diseases including cancers. Many of these diseases are life-threatening and have no treatment options. The Orphan Drug Act was enacted in 1983 to incentivize pharmaceutical companies to develop therapies for diseases that have relatively small patient populations. Despite the success of the Orphan Drug Act, 93% of rare diseases still do not have a treatment approved by the Food and Drug Administration. The science exists for many of these diseases to be treated; however, treatments may never be developed because of roadblocks in the development process, such as a lack of investment and a challenging regulatory environment. Additionally, while relatively few treatments have been approved, patients struggle with health insurance reimbursement and other coverage barriers that prohibit access to potentially lifesaving treatments. Solution: The Rare Disease Congressional Caucus helps bring public and Congressional awareness to the unique needs of the rare disease community (including patients, physicians, scientists, and industry), and creates opportunities to address barriers to the development of and access to life-altering treatments.

Specifically, we ask that you include $725 million in the FY22 budget proposal under the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) construction account for South Florida Ecosystem Restoration (SFER). The Everglades is central to Florida’s ecological and economic health, and is the source of drinking water for 8 million Floridians. Restoration of this irreplaceable resource would ensure economic security and a reliable and clean water supply for communities for generations to come. Also, the greater Everglades system supports irreplaceable natural infrastructure that impedes storm surge, saltwater intrusion, and the impacts of sea level rise. As you seek to identify large-scale projects that support economic development and natural climate solutions, we urge you to consider Everglades restoration as a commonsense option for making major progress on such efforts. Florida’s environmental assets attracted 131 million visitors in 2019, directly infusing nearly $100 billion into the state’s economy. Environmental disasters in years prior, such as severe harmful algal blooms, undermined economic stability in communities whose economies are completely dependent on a clean environment. In 2018, environmental disasters related to harmful algal blooms caused tens of millions of dollars in economic losses in some communities, resulting in lost incomes for workers that threatened their ability to feed their families.
