Philip Mayers is an Australian musician of remarkable versatility, enjoying an enviable reputation as a sought-after chamber music partner, accompanist, vocal coach, conductor, and pianist, the latter especially in the field of new music, where he has been involved in the premières of more than one hundred new works. His concert performances have taken him to leading festivals such as Montreux, Aldeburgh, Berlin Festspiele, La Roque d’Anthéron, La Folle Journée (Nantes), Wratislavia Cantans (Poland), Schleswig-Holstein, New York’s White Light Festival, and even to the April Spring Festival in Pyongyang, North Korea. He graduated with distinction from the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, having studied piano with Max Olding. After winning the piano prize of the ABC’s televised Young Performer of the Year competition and with the aid of an Australia Council grant, he left Australia for studies with Phillip Moll in Berlin, concentrating on Lied and chamber music, and later with Zelma Bodzin in New York. Now resident in Berlin, Philip performs regularly throughout Europe, Asia, and North and South America, particularly as an associate artist with soloists such as Christiane Oelze, Albrecht Mayer, Jane Manning, Hanno Müller-Brachmann, Anna Prohaska, Sarah Willis, Lisa Gasteen, Wallis Giunta, Florian Donderer, and other respected singers and chamber music partners from orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic, Leipzig Gewandhaus, New York Philharmonic and Sydney Symphony. An increasing focus is on choral music, with numerous concerts and prize-winning CD recordings to his credit, most notably with RIAS-Kammerchor, Cappella Amsterdam, Coro de la Casa Musica Porto, and the Rundfunkchor Berlin. The latter’s project “human requiem,” a staged version of the Brahms Requiem for chorus and piano four-hands (with which he has been involved since its inception) has been presented at festivals in New York, Hong Kong, Adelaide, Brussels, Granada, and elsewhere around the world. Philip has been Musical Director with, among others, the Kammeroper Schloss Rheinsberg, Schwetzinger Festspiele, and the Berliner Kammeroper (including conducting the world première of Lera Auerbach’s a cappella opera “The Blind”). The last also was responsible for the première of his chamber opera “Triest”, launching a composing career which most recently has resulted in projects as diverse as music for the silent film “La passion de Jeanne d’arc” (with soloists from the RIAS-Kammerchor and the Sheridan Ensemble) and a musical for children (a commission by the Stadttheater Klagenfurt). His work as a composer, arranger, and performer of popular music and cabaret is most in evidence in his long partnership with the English cabaret singer Mary Carewe, with whom he has appeared at notable venues such as London’s Purcell Room, the Chatelet Theatre in Paris, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, the Riga Opera House, and the Butxaca Festival in Barcelona, and tours of Great Britain, Australia, and South America. Together they have recorded three CDs, the latest of which, “A Crush on You,” features Gershwin songs in Philip’s arrangements for voice and string orchestra. He is also in demand as a vocal coach, having prepared singers for engagements at Bayreuth, Covent Garden, Liceu Barcelona, Opera Australia, the three Berlin opera companies, as well as leading houses in Germany, Austria, and France. Most recently, his continued association over the years as a guest coach with the Lisa Gasteen National Opera School in Brisbane has resulted in his stage debut as the Haushofmeister, a speaking role, in the School’s production (conducted by Simone Young) of Strauss’ “Ariadne auf Naxos.”.

In partnership with Arts Centre Melbourne, Victorian Opera staged the first ‘relaxed performance’ for children with disabilities attempted in Victoria with children’s production Hansel and Gretel. Two new works staged: Iain Grandage and Alison Croggon’s The Riders, co-produced with Malthouse Theatre, and Richard Mills’ The Play of Herod. Children’s production Hansel and Gretel was staged in a special performance at The Royal Children’s Hospital. Aspiring singers from across Melbourne and regional Victoria joined Victorian Opera and Orchestra Victoria to perform in The Big Sing at Hamer Hall. Regional community choir workshops and masterclasses conducted in Mildura, Wodonga, Stawell, Bendigo and Warragul. The Riders received critical acclaim and two Green Room Awards including ‘New Australian Opera’. Se trata de hasta donde puede mutilar un director de escena rompedor la interpretación vocal y dramática de un cantante. Para mí, las escenografías extravagantes tienen la virtud de desvirtuar no solamente las ideas del compositor, sino también el trabajo de los cantantes. Si se traslada la acción de lugar y/ o época esto repercute en la concentración de los artistas y si además la puesta en escena es una “visión personal” puede llegar a a afectar la naturalidad de la proyección de la voz, siendo la causa de desaguisados vocales memorables. La escenografía habría de ser la explicación plástica, el soporte visual de la narración dramática y musical, pero hoy la tendencia es que sea un obstáculo para las voces y para la comprensión de la obra. René Pape decía en Opera News que se siente mejor interpretando a un rey vestido de rey que de otra manera.1 Y sobre como trabaja este magnífico bajo voy a hablarles. Magnífico rey en Lohengrin, pero.... Fascinante Gurnemanz en Parsifal, sin ningún pero. Vocalmente por encima de los requisitos del papel en Lohengrin.     Lisa Gasteen: The Brünnhilde of Oz Lisa Gasteen has sung her way from Australia to Valhalla and has become the toast of Covent Garden. Jessica Duchen visits her backstage to hear about a remarkable musical journey Published: 04 October 2005 When a young girl from Brisbane began to sing to herself while riding her horse through the outback, she little thought that one day she'd be riding a Wagnerian horse into the flames of Valhalla on the world's finest operatic stages. Today, though, Lisa Gasteen is one of the most sought-after among international Wagnerian sopranos. She's currently singing Brünnhilde in the Royal Opera House's ongoing Ring cycle, where her radiant voice and stage presence were shown off to fabulous advantage in the second opera, Die Walküre , earlier this year. I caught up with her just before last Sunday's first night of the third opera, Siegfried , in which the brawny eponymous hero awakens Brünnhilde at last from her enchanted sleep. "This is where Brünnhilde has to let go of her godliness as a Valkyrie, " Gasteen says. "It's a real struggle. She's fighting to face the fear of becoming human and a woman, the fear of the unknown, the fear of being in love - because love equals vulnerability. And at the end she's wild; it's a reckless outpouring." She's thoroughly enjoying working with the conductor, Tony Pappano, the producer, Keith Warner - "He has a very clear vision, no mucking around changing things at the last minute" - and her Siegfried, the Cornish tenor John Treleaven.

    7 Sopranos Bios NZ Tour Claire Candy Claire is from Hobart, and studied at the Queensland Conservatorium completing both her Bachelor of Music in Performance and Diploma of Opera. Involved in numerous productions while studying, her highlight was performing the title role of Massenet’s Cendrillon in the Conservatorium’s 2010 production. In 2011, Claire was involved in the Developing Artist program with Opera Queensland. She was then accepted to study a Masters of Music in vocal performance at the Guildhall school of music and drama in London. During her 2 years at Guildhall, she performed in numerous productions including Die lustigen Weiber Von Windsor, Our Town and British Youth Opera’s Production of The Bartered Bride, 2012. Claire was also involved in opera scenes at Guildhall, and performed roles including The Governess (Turn of the Screw), Majenka (The Bartered Bride), Don Elvira (Don Giovanni), The Female Chorus (The Rape of Lucretia) and Tatiana (Eugene Onegin). Claire was the soloist in a performance of Mahler’s 4th symphony with the Guildhall Sinfonetta 2013, and finalist in the Guildhall Postgraduate Susan Longfield Award 2013. She has performed in Master classes with international musicians including Graham Johnson, Eugene Astid, Yvonne Kenny, Malcolm Martineau, Clive Timms, and Edith Wiens.
