Become a Sponsor of ANNA MAGNANI - A Film Series 2016 Anna Magnani – A Special Homage to a Diva of the Italian Cinema September 24, 2016 • San Francisco’s Castro Theatre Back to the big screen are four of the most acclaimed movies of Nannarella, engaging the audience in a one-day cinematic adventure with the Diva of Italian Cinema. The day begins with the new restoration of Roberto Rossellini’s neorealist war drama Open City . This is followed by Luchino Visconti’s satirical spin on the movie industry – Bellissima . The evening’s Spotlight Film is Daniel Mann’s The Rose Tattoo , the celebrated adaptation of Tennessee Williams’ play that garnered three Academy Awards, including Best Actress for Magnani, who also won a Golden Globe and a BAFTA for this memorable English-language role. A vivacious Roman- and Louisiana-styled party will follow the screening. The series will conclude with a glorious new restoration of Mario Monicelli’s The Passionate Thief , a comedic adaptation of two novels by Alberto Moravia, starring Magnani and Totò. This series is co-presented by Istituto Luce Cinecittà and The Italian Cultural Institute of San Francisco. With the support of The Leonardo da Vinci Society. The day begins with 35 mm projections of two masterpieces: the wartime drama Two Women ; The Gold of Naples - the director’s homage to his elective city with Sophia Loren, Toto’, Anna Magnani, and Edoardo De Filippo - and for the first time, the uncut version with all six episodes. Experience two of cin - ema’s most famous couples - Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni - in the new 4K digital restoration of Marriage Italian Style . The series will conclude with the California Premiere of the new restoration of the Oscar winner The Garden of the Finzi-Continis with the presence of lead actor Lino Capolicchio, followed by the “In the Secret Garden” Party in the theatre’s mezzanine level, featuring food from various regions of Italy. These special projects were co-presented by Italy’s national film institution Luce-Cinecittà in Rome and the Italian Cultural Institute of San Francisco, and organized by Amelia Antonucci. They were presented in association with the Ministry of Culture of Italy and the Consulate General of Italy in San Francisco. BERTOLUCCI took place on October 18th, 2014, at the world-famous Castro Theatre. Over 1,500 people attended the special series, which was highlighted with the Northern California Premiere of newly restored 3D ver - sion of the 9-time Academy Award-winning film THE LAST EMPEROR along with the presence of celebrated actress Joan Chen.
