The Award will be presented to the Village at the Federation’s annual awards dinner scheduled to be held on Thursday, June 7 . The Guidelines are the product of collaboration between Stephen Tilly Architects, Inc of Dobbs Ferry and the Village Planning Board, Zoning Board of Appeals, and Historic Preservation Commission, along with Village Planning Department staff. The Guidelines focus on the Village's Sparta and Downtown historic districts, the residential neighborhoods surrounding these two districts, and the commercial corridors located on Routes 9 and Route 133. If your property is not located within these areas, you will still find the recommendations to be useful in planning your project. Taconic Opera Seeking Choral Singers for Rossini’s Beloved Petite Messe Solennelle Finishing off its 2011-2012 season and continuing its tradition of presenting an annual choral masterwork by an opera composer, Taconic Opera will be offering two performances of Petite Messe Solenelle by Gioacchino Rossini , the composer of The Barber of Seville, Cinderella (La Cenerentola) , and many others. Since this work is a favorite among choral singers, the company is extending an invitation to them to collaborate in this concert program featuring the Taconic Opera chorus, and professional lead singers and orchestra. The concert will be conducted under the baton of Dan Montez, General Director of the Taconic Opera. Completed in Rossini’s later years and one of very few works he offered to the public during those years, he describes with characteristic wit why he chose to write a sacred mass: "Good God—behold completed this poor little Mass. You know well, I was born for comic opera. Little science, a little heart, that is all. So may you be blessed, and grant me Paradise!” The Emperor Napolean found the mass to be neither little (Petite), solemn (Solennelle) or even liturgical. Audiences find this controversial but exciting work fascinating, unique, and a true pleasure for the ear and the heart to experience. Performances are at the Ossining United Methodist Church on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at 7:30pm, and Sunday, June 3, 2012 at 3:00pm. Chorus rehearsals will take place on 801 Kitchewan Road (Route 134) and will begin around March 28 and will continue on Saturdays from 3-5pm and Wednesdays from 7-9pm until the concert dates. Choral singers wishing to learn the piece for the first time or eager wipe the dust of their old score are encouraged to join. There are no membership fees, but singers must supply their own music. A short, painless, friendly audition is required and will be done by appointment at a convenient time for the auditioner. For further questions, concerns or to schedule an audition, contact Mary Corda: [email protected] or (914) 649-1826.

Collegium Westchester Concert, June 9, 2012 Collegium Westchester Chorus and Orchestra will present its final concert of the season on Saturday, June 9, 2012 at 8 pm, on the evening of the Ossining Village Fair, at the First Presbyterian Church of Ossining (34 South Highland Avenue, on Route 9 opposite Ossining High School). Come to the fair, have dinner in town, and stay for the concert! The program consists of Mendelssohn's Tu es Petrus , Brahms' Symphony No. 3, and excerpts from Peter Lieberson's The World in Flower . Admission is free, although donations are gratefully accepted. For more information, please call 914-282-8611 or visit www.collegiumwestchester.org . This event is made possible in part by the Arts Alive program of ArtsWestchester, with funding from the Decentralization Program of the New York State Council on the Arts. Previous concerts of the season explored “19th Century Titans” and “18th and 20th Century Titans,” while this concert explores "Bridges Between Centuries". It will feature music in which masters of a given century look backward or forward to ideas of past or future centuries. The two 19th century pieces on the program look back to earlier times: Mendelssohn's Tu es Petrus , which looks back to Renaissance counterpoint of the 16th century, and Brahms' Third Symphony, which looks back to Baroque and Classical structural ideals of the 18th century. The program will also include the first performance of selections of the late Peter Lieberson's The World in Flower since the work's 2009 New York Philharmonic premiere. The World in Flower looks both backwards in time to a more understandable tonal language, and forwards in time toward a universal understanding between people of different cultural backgrounds. Lieberson based the work on texts about love from an unusually diverse collection of sources: the Inuit poet Uvavnuk, the Chilean poet Pablo Neruda, and the medieval French Christian author Marguerite Porete, as well as prayers of the Navajo. Collegium Westchester Chorus and Orchestra is modeled on the 17th century Collegium Musicum in that it combines active professional and accomplished avocational musicians into one ensemble, but it performs music from the 17th century to the present. Its instrumentalists and singers are drawn from Westchester County and elsewhere in the New York City metropolitan area, and include participants with leading orchestras and choruses in New York and throughout the world. Its music director, Westchester resident Eric Kramer, has worked as a conductor in Europe and the US, with groups including the Berlin Sinfonietta, Opéra National de Lyon, Budapest Festival Orchestra, and Bronx Opera. One additional note of interest regarding this concert is the fact that Collegium Westchester's conductor Eric Kramer was himself a composition student of Peter Lieberson. Further information and updates will be posted at www.collegiumwestchester.org, and can also be obtained by calling 914-282-8611. These concerts are made possible in part by the Arts Alive program of ArtsWestchester, with funding from the Decentralization Program of the New York State Council on the Arts.
