As part of our creation in the image and likeness of God we were made not only good, but also social. Because God, the Holy Trinity, is a com- munity Himself. Three persons, one God, living as a perfect community. When Jesus came to earth the two greatest commandments he gave us were to love God above all else, and to love our neighbors as we do ourselves. He is teaching us how we should behave in community. We have duties not just to ourselves, but to all those around us in our family, community, and entire society. As the Second Vatican Council said, “By his innermost nature man is a social being, and unless he relates himself to others he can neither live nor develop his potential,” (Gaudium et Spes 12). The history of Catholic social teaching shows us the correct way to order society to best help each other live truly free and grow closer to God. Without a society based on Catholic social teaching, following the principles of Jesus, society will not be capable of seeking together the common good and serving everyone, especially the poor and vulnerable, who deserve community as well.

The base unit of community among persons is the family, and family is built by marriage. All else builds from that. Without family there is no society. That is why it is so important to protect it against the many assaults of modern culture. Threats like divorce, same-sex marriage, single parenthood, cohabitation, sex before marriage and abortion proliferate and are exalted in today’s culture. All of these sins work to undermine our families, and by doing so undermine our community and destroy society. A society based upon this way of life will never be able to seek the common good, as we can see in modern times as we are becoming more divided and people get violent and try to shut up anyone who doesn’t think exactly like them. The alternative to this is to return to a biblical morality and worldview, where instead of hedonism, the family is en- shrined. We can help this by modeling good, Catholic family life and living out the virtues that we have by the grace of God. Let us pray to the Holy Family that more people may repent, stop cooperating with all the evil in society, and return to God.

Since the beginning, God has said that man should be in community. In Genesis 2:18 He said, “It is not good that the man should be alone.” Man’s responsibility to live in community with others is written throughout the Old Testament. It is written about often in the law of and 7:5-7 says that if we act justly among one another, oppressing no one, and sheltering the vulnerable (and do not run after other gods) we shall dwell in God’s land. Jesus talks constantly of our duties to one another, along with the commandment to love our neighbor as ourselves. Jesus says in John 15 that we should love each other, not just as we’re capable of, but as He loved us; with perfect love. He also speaks on fam- ily and some of the sins against it in Matthew 5:31-32, “It was also said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’ But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of unchastity, makes her an adulteress; and whoever marries a di- vorced woman commits adultery.” All throughout the Bible, God is constantly calling us to community, community with Him as children of God but also community with our neighbors, our brothers and sisters in Christ.

SAINTS IN TRAINING Formation for young children learning the Faith to become

Saints Louis & Zelie Martin teach us about Call to Family Color and trace around the community Born into a military family in Bordeaux, Louis trained to be- see if you can make a heart! come a watchmaker. His desire to join a religious community went unfulfilled because he didn’t know Latin. Moving to Normandy, he met the highly-skilled lace maker, Zélie Guérin, who also had been disappointed in her attempts to enter religious life. They married in 1858, and over the years were blessed with nine children, though two sons and two daughters died in infancy.

Louis managed the lace-making business that Zélie continued at home while raising their children. She died from breast can- cer in 1877. Louis then moved the family to Lisieux to be near his brother and sister-in-law, who helped with the education of his five surviving girls. His health began to fail after his 15- year-old daughter entered the Monastery of Mount Carmel at Lisieux in 1888. Louis died in 1894, a few months after being committed to a sanitarium.

The home that Louis and Zélie created nurtured the sanctity of all their children, but especially their youngest, who is known to us as Thérèse of the Child Jesus. Louis and Zélie were beatified in 2008, and canonized by Francis on October 18, 2015. The liturgical feast of Saints Louis Martin and Zélie Guérin is July 12. SAINTS OF THE WEEK Sunday, January 10: St. Peter Urseolus—Hermit St. Peter Urseolus was born to a noble family in Rivo Alto, in 928. He served in the military and was elevated to the rank of admiral in the navy where he led many successful campaigns against pirates. In 967 he was elected Doge of Venice. After two years in this position, he abandoned the secular world and became a Benedictine monk at the Abbey of Cuxa in the Spanish Pyrenees. At the recommendation of St. Romulad, Peter left the mon- astery and lived in isolation as a hermit for the remainder of his life. Monday, January 11: St. Paulinus of Aquileia—Bishop St. Paulinas was born to a farming family in Premariacco, Italy around the year 726. De- spite his poor background, he received a good education and became a courtier to Charle- magne in 774 where he served as Royal Master of Grammar. Paulinus was appointed Pa- triarch of Aquileia in 787. In this role he combated against the heresy of adoptionism and various other heresies which denied the divinity of Christ. He sent missionaries to preach to the Avars, and he himself preached in Styria and Carinthia. Tuesday, January 12: St. Anthony Mary Pucci— St. Anthony Mary Pucci was born to a poor peasant family in Poggiole, Italy on April 16, 1819. An- thony expressed interest in entering the religious life, but received opposition from his father who served as a local sacristan. In 1837 he joined the Servites and in 1843 was ordained a priest. Anthony was appointed pastor of a parish in Viareggio, Italy where he served for the remainder of his life. He was known to care for the poor and sick, especially during the epidemic of 1854, and he provided education from children by helping establish the Holy Childhood Society in 1853.

Wednesday, January 13: St. Kentigern Mungo—Bishop St. Kentigern, nicknamed “Mungo” (which translates to “darling”), was born to a Scottish princess in the village of Culross around the year 518. He was entrusted to St. Serf who raised him in his monastery. When he reached adulthood, Kentigern lived for some time as a hermit. He then traveled throughout the region as a missionary. At the request of the King of Strathclyde, Roderick Hael, Kentigern was conse- crated the first Bishop of Glasgow in 540. Due to anti-Christian sentiments, he was driven into exile in the year 553 and lived for a time in Wales. He returned to Glasgow in 573 to resume his duties.

Thursday, January 14: Bl. Peter Donders—Priest Bl. Peter Donders was born in , Holland on October 27, 1809. He wanted to become a priest, but his education ended early when he was forced to learn his father’s trade of weaving. When he was 22 years old, Peter entered the seminary of St. Michael-Gestel. He was ordained a priest on June 5, 1841. Peter was as- signed to serve in the city of Paramaribo in the Dutch Colony of Surinam where he ministered to the mili- tary and plantation slaves. In 1856 Peter offered to care for the lepers in Batavia. He remained there for the rest of the life caring for their needs, physical and spiritual, and working to improve their living conditions.

Friday, January 15: St. Nina— St. Nina is believed to have been a relative of St. George. She was born around the year 280 in Cappa- docia, Turkey. She traveled throughout the region, preaching the Gospel and performing miraculous healings. One day the Queen of Georgia, Nana, approached her with an incurable condition and Nina cured her of the illness. The queen converted to . She later converted King Mirian III of Iberia when he became blinded and lost on a hunting trip, only to find his way back safely by praying to “Nina’s God.” Nina spent the remainder of her life preaching throughout Georgia.

Saturday, January 16: St. Honoratus of Aries—Abbot and Bishop St. Honoratus was the son of a Roman consular, born in Lorraine, France around the year 350. He was raised in a pagan family but converted to Christianity along with his brother, St. Venantius. Honoratus, Venantius and their friend, St. Caprasius, studied monasticism together in Greece. Honoratus returned to France where he founded the Abbey of Lérins on an island in the year 400. In 426, he was pressed to become Archbishop of where he labored to combat the Arian and Manichaean heresies. JANUARY 3, 2021 TOTAL $22,845.29 Weekly Budget $15,833.00 ACTUAL TO BUDGET +$7,012.29
