9 NOVEMBER • 2015 The Ute Theater Presents John McEuen and !

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band music history comes alive on stage when alumnus Jimmy Ibbotson joins founding member John McEuen for the love of the music that brought

THE SOURCE them together for so many records and years on the road. The reunion takes place November 22 at 7:30pm at the Ute Theater, 132 E. Fourth Street in Rifle CO! For more information on tickets, amenities, visit online: http://utetheater.com. These two Colorado Music Hall of Fame 2015 honorees create a night of new magic with favorite Nitty Gritty songs and the jamming songs they are known for, taking the audience through “folk to rock to country” and detouring happily through bluegrass to blues.String Wizard John brings his banjo, fiddle, mandolin and guitar to join up with Ibbotson’s mandola, guitar and iconic voice. The man who sang Fishin’ in the Dark, , Ripplin’ Waters, Sarah in the Summer, , Long Hard Road and many others again hits the stage with his picker counterpart to deliver up-close and personal versions of many of the songs for which they are known. It was 1969 when J. Ibbotson from Philly first hooked up with J. McEuen from Orange County and was brought in to the to make their fifth album – the iconic Uncle Charlie and his dog Teddy. The album set the career on fire for the NGDB, with three big radio hits. It was followed by Will the Circle Be Unbroken, a legendary masterpiece multi-platinum album initiated by John in 1971 (in Boulder CO), putting them in the studio with Merle Travis, Doc Watson, Earl Scruggs, Maybelle Carter, Vassar Clements, Jimmy Martin, and Roy Acuff. Their awards together include Grammy Hall of Fame honors for both Mr. Bojangles and the Circle album, CMA awards, Grammys, and numerous other accolades. An evening of hit songs that have become the soundtrack for many people’s lives, along with the funny stories behind them, also features the outstanding musical prowess of McEuen in many styles that he is not able to exercise within the Dirt Band’s confines. It’s an evening like no other, one to be remembered, as you are invited to come see these two take us into that world of wonderful music and laughter for which they are famous. Jimmy Ibbotson of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band has said, "After years of playing Red Rocks, we have never gotten over that level of thrill. Fans are united and focused on the music in some shared experience like that of a congregation. Red Rocks can do that. It can take your breath away, just going to the concession stands." Some nitty-gritty on John & Jimmy:

Jimmy Ibbotson on the song “I Find Jesus.” “That song came to me in a dream. I was down in Costa Rica one night, and I dreamt I was in this southern church and all the people were looking at me and going, ‘Get up and sing your song.’ And I didn’t know anybody in the church except through their smiles and their acceptance. And I said, ‘What do you mean? Get up and sing what song?’ Somebody said, ‘Your new song’ and someone tapped me on the back—and it was my dad, who had passed on a couple months before. And he said, ‘Go on Jimmy, get up and sing it.’ So the thing came in real time.”

John on playing with Jimmy It's like two people being one person. It's like he can change songs in the middle of the lyric because it fits good there, and he doesn't have to ask or tell. It's the same thing with me. It's like a combination of the Dirt Band, the Grateful Dead and the Smothers Brothers.

John & Steve Martin Steve Martin is an extremely accomplished bluegrass performer. With the help of high school friend John McEuen, who later became a member of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Martin taught himself to play the banjo when he was 17. He's been picking away ever since. If you see him on stage these days, he’s likely strumming a banjo with his band, the Steep Canyon Rangers.

Meeting Duane Allman for the first time The Dirt band was on its first road trip, going through Saint Louis, and my brother and I went down to see this group called the Allman Joys, and they were absolutely incredible. Bill (Bill McEuen went on to manage the Hourglass in California, as well as Steve Martin and Nitty Gritty) convinced them, later that month when we got back to L.A., to come out to L.A. to try and make it. They came out and moved in with the Dirt Band—we all had a house that we were living in at the time in Beechwood Canyon.

On The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson: Oh, yeah, we did the Tonight Show several times. We did most of the TV shows that were available except 'Ed Sullivan.' But we did Bandstand several times; 'Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour;' 'The Sonny and Cher Show;' 'Laugh In;' we were on the third 'Laugh In' show; and 'Playboy After Dark.' Just a long list of television shows and the reason I say that is other groups won't be able to have this career, because this type of TV show doesn't exist any longer.
