CUMPTON, CLUTCH HITS CARRY GOLDEYES: The Winnipeg Goldeyes beat the Sioux Falls Canaries 6-2 at Sioux Falls Stadium on Saturday evening. Darnell Sweeney drove in Wes Darvill with a single in the top of the first, and the Goldeyes made it 3-0 in the third on a Logan Hill RBI groundout and a John Nester two-out, RBI single. Darvill a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth, while Eric Wood stretched the lead to 5-0 with a two- out, RBI single in the fifth. Jonathan Moroney scored the Goldeyes’ sixth and final run on a passed ball in the top of the eighth. Sioux Falls pulled within 6-2 in the bottom of the eighth on a two-out, two-run from Alay Lago. Brandon Cumpton started for the Goldeyes and picked up the win, pitching 5.1 shutout innings on six hits. Cumpton walked one and struck out four. Kent Hasler pitched 1.2 scoreless innings in relief of Cumpton with two strikeouts. Victor Capellan worked a scoreless bottom of the ninth.

ALL-TIME AGAINST THE CANARIES: The Winnipeg Goldeyes are 172-111 all-time against the Sioux Falls Canaries, including an 82-59 record at Sioux Falls Stadium. The Canaries were one of the original six members of the Northern League during the birth of modern independent in 1993. The Canaries, St. Paul Saints, and Sioux City Explorers are the three longest-tenured independent teams still operating in their original cities. The Canaries joined the American Association as a charter member in 2006, and won their first league championship in 2008. The Canaries rebranded themselves as the Sioux Falls Pheasants in 2010, and made a return trip to the American Association Championship Series that season. The club changed its name back to the Canaries in 2013. Mike Meyer is in his fourth year as Canaries’ manager. Meyer served as hitting coach for the Laredo Lemurs from 2015-16, which included the Lemurs’ 2015 American Association championship campaign. Meyer previously served as Sioux Falls’ pitching coach from 2007-14. Meyer was 42-39 with six saves and a 4.20 ERA during an eight-year playing career, and was part of the Saints’ 2004 Northern League championship club. Former Goldeyes’ centre fielder Reggie Abercrombie hit 54 of his American Association record 146 home runs as a member of Sioux Falls from 2010-13. On June 4 th , 2014, five Goldeyes’ pitchers combined to no-hit the Canaries in the nightcap of a double header at Sioux Falls Stadium. The Canaries beat the Goldeyes 14-5 in the first ever game at Shaw Park on June 4 th , 1999. The Canaries finished 38-62 in 2019, although they started the season 17-10, and were in a playoff position as late as July 12 th at 27-24.

SERIES MATCHUP: The Winnipeg Goldeyes are 22-15 and in first place in the American Association. The Goldeyes just won three of four from the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks at Newman Outdoor Field. The Goldeyes are third in the American Association in hitting (.279), second in pitching (4.20), and fourth in fielding (.975). The Sioux Falls Canaries are 19-18, in third place, and 3.0 games behind the Goldeyes. The Canaries just lost two of three to the St. Paul Saints at Sioux Falls Stadium. The Canaries are tied for first in the league in batting (.282), sixth in pitching (5.12), and fifth in defence (.970). This is the last of three head-to-head series this season between Winnipeg and Sioux Falls. The Goldeyes were 5-4 against the Canaries in 2019.
