Music at Communion Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence Alan Lewis Let all mortal flesh keep silence, Rank on rank the host of heaven And with fear and trembling stand; Spreads its vanguard on the way, Ponder nothing earthly minded, As the Light of light descendeth For with blessing in his hand, From the realms of endless day, Christ our God to earth descending Comes the powers of hell to vanquish Comes our homage to demand. As the darkness clears away. King of kings, yet born of Mary, At his feet the six winged seraph, As of old on earth he stood, Cherubim with sleepless eye, Lord of lords, in human vesture, Veil their faces to the presence, In the body and the blood; As with ceaseless voice they cry: He will give to all the faithful Alleluia, Alleluia His own self for heavenly food. Alleluia, Lord Most High! –Divine Liturgy of St. James, tr. Gerard Moultrie Communion Hymn We are climbing Jacob’s ladder LIFT EVERY VOICE & SING, 220 Post-Communion Prayer BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER, page 365 Said by all together, kneeling. Postlude Trumpet Voluntary William Boyce All who wish to listen to the postlude from the Choir Stalls are invited to do so. Coffee and fellowship follows in the Parish Hall. MUSICAL NOTES A warm welcome to Rick Murrell, playing the trumpet this morning, and thanks also to Elizabeth Gassler, playing the ’cello in the Prelude. The Prelude today comes from Handel’s oratorio Samson, where it ushers in a joyous conclusion to the rather bleak ending of the biblical narrative. (The “seraphim” are, in Christian tradition, the highest of the nine ranks of angels, followed in turn by cherubim, thrones, dominions, virtues, powers, principalities, archangels, and angels. All these are named, in almost perfect order, by the text of Hymn 618, Ye watchers and ye holy ones.) The combination of solo soprano and trumpet have made Let the bright seraphim a widespread favorite.
