This half-hour special counts down the show’s Top Ten episodes and features interviews with its stars – Andy Griffith and Don Knotts – and other Hollywood notables including Brad Garrett, Michael McKean, Lewis Black, Danny Bonaduce, Max Baer, Jr., Tim Conway and several others – who lend their insight into some of their favorite Andy Griffith episodes. The selections range from “Manhunt,” an episode in which viewers learn that Barney and Andy are cousins to “Mr. McBeevee,” in which Andy believes Opie has made up a fictitious friend. The special was produced for TV Land by TV Land Productions in conjunction with Robert Small Entertainment. The show will repeat on Thursday, July 22 at 7:30 PM (all times ET/PT). I was eleven years old. My parents were in their late thirties. That evening CBS broadcast the fourth epi­ sode of TAGS, "Ellie Comes to Town." It strikes me as fitting and a little eerie that as Ellie was settling into Mayberry, I was beginning my own road to the Friendly Town. The story of how I became an undocumented Mayberrian, the town's resident alien, began on that Monday. Like hundreds of thousands of other Cubans, we settled in Miami. Except that we didn't truly settle, since we were planning to return to Cuba to pick up where the island's turbulent history had left us off. We saw ourselves as people passing through, transients rather than settlers. Unlike immigrants, we didn't come to America looking for a better life. We had a good one in Cuba. America was a rest stop before we turned around and headed back home. The im­ migrant lives in the fast lane. He is in a hurry-in a hurry to get a job, learn the language, lay down roots.

Poston's run as a comic bumbler began in the mid- 1950s with "The Steve Allen Show" after Allen plucked the character actor from the Broadway stage to join an ensemble of eccentrics he would conduct "man in the street" interviews with. Don Knotts was the shaky Mr. Morrison, Louis Nye was the suave, overconfident Gordon Hathaway and Poston's character was so unnerved by the television cameras that he couldn't remember who he was. He won an Emmy playing "The Man Who Can't Remember His Name." But when Allen moved the show from New York to Los Angeles in 1959, Poston stayed behind. "Hollywood's not for me right now; I'm a Broadway cat," he told a reporter at the time. When he did finally move west, he quickly began appearing in variety shows, sitcoms and films.
