Further distribution or reproduction in any format is prohibited without the permission of the copyright holder. ABSRACT Understanding evil spiritual forces is essential for Christian theology. Evil has typically been studied either from a philosophical perspective or through the lens of ‘spiritual warfare’. The first seldom considers demonology; the second is flawed by poor methodology. Furthermore, warfare language is problematic, being very dualistic, associated with violence and poorly applicable to ministry. This study addresses these issues by developing a new model for conceptualizing and counteracting evil using ‘non-warfare’ biblical metaphors, and relying on contemporary metaphor theory, which claims that metaphors are cognitive and can depict reality. In developing this model, I examine four biblical themes with respect to alternate metaphors for evil: Creation, Cult, Christ and Church. Insights from anthropology (binary oppositions), theology (dualism, nothingness) and science (chaos-complexity theory) contribute to the construction of the model, and the concepts of profane space, sacred space and sacred actions (divine initiative and human responsibility) guide the investigation. -

After some consideration, realizing that I myself stood in a “Believers Church Tradition” of sorts, I wondered what such a course would and should look like. You are probably wondering as well. What follows is an extended definition that draws on the history of theology, systematic theology and applied ecclesiology, which can be found, in various ways and shapes in the traditions represented here at ACTS. - Such a course, however, will always be taught from the differing perspectives within the ACTS consortium, and, while I will do my level best to be comprehensive across these traditions, it is a given that my perspective will often reflect the Baptist tradition in which I now stand. I make no apologies for this, but do wish to encourage the class to engage in dialogue with myself and other colleagues, from their own perspectives. -

Article Bernard Ramm’s Scientifi c Approach to Theology Andrew Kim Andrew Kim The year 2016, which marks the 75th anniversary of the American Scientifi c Affi liation, also marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Bernard L. Ramm (1916–1992), one of the affi liation’s most important fi gures, and one whose infl uence among evangelicals in the area of religion and science has been matched by few others. Much of the historical attention given to Ramm has focused on his scientifi c background and how it infl uenced his biblical hermeneutic and treatment of scientifi c topics. However, through use of hitherto unstudied sources, this article will show how his scientifi c background also conditioned his overarching theological method. The school’s roots are found in two institutions which have long provided evangelical leadership for the Christian church in a variety of ministries. The Conwell School of Theology was founded in Philadelphia in 1884 by the Rev. Russell Conwell, a prominent Baptist minister. In 1889, out of a desire to equip “men and women in practical religious work... and to furnish them with a thoroughly biblical training,” the Boston Missionary Training School was founded by another prominent Baptist minister, the Rev. Journal of Translation, Volume 9, Number 2 (2013) 1 Biblical Cosmology: The Implications for Bible Translation John R. Roberts John Roberts is a Senior Linguistics Consultant with SIL International. He has a Ph.D. in Linguistics from University College London. From 1978 to 1998 John supervised the Amele language project in Papua New Guinea during which time translations of Genesis and the New Testament were completed. John has taught graduate level linguistics courses in the UK, USA, Sweden, S. Korea and W. Asia. He has published many articles in the domains of descriptive linguistics and Bible translation and several linguistics books. His current research interest is to understand Genesis 1–11 in an ancient Near East context. Abstract We show that the creation account in Genesis 1.1–2.3 refers to a worldview of the cosmos as the ancient Mesopotamians and ancient Egyptians understood it to be. These civilisations left behind documents, maps and iconography which describe the cosmological beliefs they had. The differences between the biblical cosmology and ancient Near East cosmologies are observed to be mainly theological in nature rather than cosmological. However, the biblical cosmology is conceptually different to a modern view of the cosmos in significant ways. We examine how a range of terms are translated in English Bible translations, including ḥōšeḵ, təhôm, rāqîᵃʿ, hammayim ʾăšer mēʿal lārāqîᵃʿ, and mayim mittaḥaṯ lā’āreṣ, and show that if the denotation of these terms is in accordance with a modern worldview then this results in a text that has incongruities and is incoherent in the nature of the cosmos it depicts. -

Inspiration: • This concerns the origin of the Bible. • We’re saying it is from God or “God-breathed.” • “From God” 2. Infallibility: • This speaks to Bible’s authority & enduring nature. • Means incapable of failing; cannot be broken; permanently binding. • “Cannot fail” 3. ABSTRACT Reclaiming Peace: Evangelical Scientists and Evolution After World War II Christopher M. Rios, Ph.D. Advisor: William L. Pitts, Jr., Ph.D. This dissertation argues that during the same period in which antievolutionism became a movement within American evangelicalism, two key groups of evangelical scientists attempted to initiate a countervailing trend. The American Scientific Affiliation was founded in 1941 at the encouragement of William Houghton, president of Moody Bible Institute. The Research Scientists‘ Christian Fellowship was started in London in 1944 as one of the graduate fellowship groups of Inter-Varsity Fellowship. Both organizations were established out of concern for the apparent threat stemming from contemporary science and with a desire to demonstrate the compatibility of Christian faith and science. Yet the assumptions of the respective founders and the context within which the organizations developed were notably different. At the start, the Americans assumed that reconciliation between the Bible and evolution required the latter to be proven untrue. The British never doubted the validity of evolutionary theory and were convinced from the beginning that conflict stemmed not from the teachings of science or the Bible, but from the perspectives and biases with which one approached the issues. Nevertheless, by the mid 1980s these groups became more similar than they were different. As the ASA gradually accepted evolution and developed convictions similar to those of their British counterpart, the RSCF began to experience antievolutionary resistance with greater force. To set the stage for these developments, this study begins with a short introduction to the issues and brief examination of current historiographical trends.
