A Publication of The Daily News Publishing Co. 2 March 19-25, 2021 The News Bill aims to help Tennesseans build families residents and best friends Lauren Brown and Mollie Walker know the pain. The two co-founded Tennessee Fertility Advocates during the summer of 2020 and the group has about 7,000 members. “We fortunately and unfortunately walked through the infertility together,” Brown said. “When we started this, I was in the midst of a miscarriage and going through treatment.” The two “gave (their) pain a purpose” by providing camaraderie for Tennesseans facing the disease of infer- tility. The body should reproduce naturally, like many other functions, but doesn’t, they said. “Tennessee Fertility Advocates be- came a support group, but legislation was always the goal,” Brown said. The state legislative committees will begin reviewing the bill related to fertility coverage this month. Sen. Becky Massey of Knoxville is sponsoring the bill. Rep. Sabi ‘Doc' Kumar of Springfield, who serves as the chair of the insurance committee is sponsoring the corresponding bill in the state House. Both are Republicans. “I don’t look at a bill as a Republican or a Democrat bill,” Massey said. “I look at the merits and how it makes a difference in Tennesseans lives.” The pro-family act is an amendment to an insurance bill.
