RAMTHAKUR COLLEGE - A BRIEF PROFILE Brief History Ramthakur College is located in the Badharghat area of Sadar sub-division of the West District of Tripura. It is a co- education and a day-shift college affiliated to the Tripura University (A Central University). The College has 6.34 acres of land and is geographically located in the urban area. The College is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) and 12 (B). The College was established in the year 17th July, 1967 by Late Pramod Ranjan Bhatta Chaudhuri at Town Pratapgarh in a six room structure with eight subjects in the Arts group. After a period of 15 years, the College was shifted to its present campus at Badharghat, Siddhi Ashram, Agartala. The College was subsequently taken over by the State Government in the year 1982. The present campus is located around 5 k.m. from the heart of the city and 1.5 k.m. from the Badharghat railway station. The College imparts lesson in various subjects at the undergraduate level. At present, the College offers general degree programmes in three streams - Arts, Commerce and Science with more than 3000 students.The Curriculum for the courses offered by the College is prescribed by the Tripura University to which the College is affiliated. The curricular programme of the College currently comprises of three-year Bachelor degree programmes consisting of six-semesters. The semester system has been followed from July, 2014 onwards as per Tripura University norms. Subjects offered in the Arts group are Bengali, English, Hindi, , Pali, Sanskrit, Education, History, Political Science and Philosophy; in intermediate group are Economics, Mathematics and Physical Education; in Commerce is Accounting Group and in Science Botany, Chemistry, Human Physiology, Physics and Zoology. All subjects are taught both as elective and as honours options with the exception of Botany, Human Physiology, Kokborok, Pali, and Physical Education, which are taught as elective subjects only. In the last two academic sessions, the College has introduced Honours option in the subject Zoology (from July, 2015) and Kokborok subject as elective option (from July 2016). The total number of student of the College for the academic year (2016-17) is 3474 among which 1612 (46 percent) are female and 1862 (54 percent) are male students. 59 percent of the students belongs to the socially backward community among which 14 percent is from the Scheduled Tribe community, 24 percent from the Scheduled Caste community and 21 percent from the Other Backward community. At present, the College has a Principal, 42 Assistant/Associate Professors and 21 Post Graduate Teachers. The College has 37 academic and administrative office staff. The College has a Distance Education Study Centre under Tripura University from 2008 onwards. At present, the centre offers UG general courses in five subjects of Arts group - Bengali, Education, History, Philosophy and Political Science following the semester system. It provides an opportunity of higher education to those students who cannot afford regular mode of higher education for various reasons. Date of Affiliation to Tripura University: 2nd November, 1987.
