Tony Hayward
Tony Hayward CEO of BP (2007-2010) Anthony B. "Tony" Hayward was CEO of BP in 2007-10. His career with BP spanned almost two decades. Tony studied geology at Aston University in Birmingham and received his PhD in the same subject at Edinburgh University. In 1982, shortly after graduation, British Petroleum recruited Tony to become a rig geologist, where he worked on an offshore oil rig in Aberdeen, Scotland. He was later chosen to be an Executive Assistant in the Exploration and Production division. In 1992, he moved to Colombia as exploration manager, and became president of BP's operations in Venezuela three years later. He held a series of technical and commercial roles in Europe, Asia and South America of BP and became chief executive of BP's Exploration and Production division in January 2003, taking Lord Browne's position after the Lord became the company's CEO. Tony became CEO in May 2007 after Lord Browne's resignation. He stepped down from his position after one of the largest environmental catastrophes in history, the explosion of BP's Deepwater Horizon oil rig, off the coast of Mississippi, which killed 11 people and spilled more than 92 million gallons of oil into the Gulf and what BP experienced as a $17 billion business loss. In 2011, Hayward has returned to the oil business and founded the Genel Energy to produce oil in the Kurdish north of Iraq. From 2013 to 2021, he was Chairman of the Swiss commodities giant Glencore, where he also was member of the Environment and Health Committee. -

I am very glad to be here. In fact, there is no more important place I could be today. I wanted to take the opportunity to join you because I appreciate the challenges you have faced and the support you have given. I want to start by making the apology you deserve from BP. We are truly sorry for the tragedy that occurred on April 20. We deeply regret the loss of 11 colleagues’ lives and the impact on the Gulf Coast. And we are sorry for the impact on your businesses. I’m here today to thank you for your support in representing BP over the past six months and to ask you to continue that support. I recognise that we need to earn your trust all over again and I want to give you some clear reasons to believe in BP’s future. Because for three million customers a day in 10,000 gas stations in 27 states, you are BP. You have had to face a lot of anger over the last few months on our behalf. Some of you experienced protests at your sites and you managed those difficult situations very professionally. In the Gulf region, sales were down year on year by up to 30% in some sites. Across the whole East of Rockies region we lost around 8% of sales this summer against last. I appreciate what this has meant for you. -

National Commission on the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and Offshore Drilling STOPPING THE SPILL: THE FIVE-MONTH EFFORT TO KILL THE MACONDO WELL ---Draft--- Staff Working Paper No. 6 Staff Working Papers are written by the staff of the National Commission on the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and Offshore Drilling for the use of members of the Commission. They are preliminary, subject to change, and do not necessarily reflect the views either of the Commission as a whole or of any of its members. In addition, they may be based in part on confidential interviews with government and non-government personnel. The effort to contain and control the blowout of the Macondo well was unprecedented. From April 20, 2010, the day the well blew out, until September 19, 2010, when the government finally declared it “dead,” BP expended enormous resources to develop and deploy new technologies that eventually captured a substantial amount of oil at the source and, after 87 days, stopped the flow of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. The government organized a team of scientists and engineers, who took a crash course in petroleum engineering and, over time, were able to provide substantive oversight of BP, in combination with the Coast Guard and the Minerals Management Service (MMS).1 BP had to construct novel devices, and the government had to mobilize personnel on the fly, because neither was ready for a disaster of this nature in deepwater. The containment story thus contains two parallel threads. First, on April 20, the oil and gas industry was unprepared to respond to a deepwater blowout, and the federal government was similarly unprepared to provide meaningful supervision. -
