Enewsletter Summer 2017 View in your browser ENewsletter Summer 2017 #EuropeForCulture Much has happened in Europe with regard to cultural heritage since our last newsletter. On 25 March, EU leaders adopted the Rome Declaration where they “pledge to work towards a Union which preserves our cultural heritage and promotes cultural diversity”. Europa Nostra also welcomed the Florence Declaration of the first ever G7 Ministerial meeting on Culture. This Declaration referred, among others, to the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018, for which the legal and budgetary framework has now been agreed by all EU Institutions. Europa Nostra will be one of the key partners of the European Commission for the Year. We will be supporting and advising the EU Institutions as regards the European Year (official social media campaign: #EuropeForCulture) as a member of the “stakeholders group”, together with members of the European Heritage Alliance 3.3 (such as NEMO, ENCATC, FRH, EHHA etc). Read more Watch Highlights Belgrade Conference: Heritage force for South-East Europe From 15-17 June, in Belgrade, Europa Nostra, Europa Nostra Serbia and South East European Heritage Network held the conference “Cultural Heritage Counts for (South-East) Europe” and capacity-building days on “Education and Citizens Engagement”. These events gathered more than 150 experts and stakeholders from SEE region and other parts of Europe in discussing the approaches and challenges in measuring the impact of cultural heritage on the economy, society, culture and the environment. Read more EU supports “Sharing Heritage - Sharing Values” Project Europa Nostra was selected for EU funding for the implementation of its ambitious network project “Sharing Heritage – Sharing Values” for the next 4 years. In view of the upcoming European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018, the evaluators stressed the relevance of Europa Nostra in mobilising key players in the field of heritage and acknowledged the high quality of the project proposal which scored 89 out of 100 points. Read more Europa Nostra speaks at Culture Council of the EU On 23 May, Europa Nostra addressed the Culture Council of the European Union on the role of culture and cultural heritage for the EU’s external relations. During their meeting, the Culture Ministers from all 28 EU Member States discussed and adopted Council Conclusions on an EU strategic approach to international cultural relations. This is the first time Europa Nostra had been invited to speak at a Council meeting in Brussels and marks a new step in the recognition by EU Institutions of Europa Nostra’s work. Read more Save the House of Bizet in Bougival (France): Contribute to the crowdfunding campaign! 21 June 2017 marked the 20th anniversary of the European Day of Music, and the start of a crowdfunding campaign aiming at mobilising support for the renaissance of Bougival, an historic town near Paris that preserves the memory of great European artists from 19th century. A press conference was held yesterday in Paris under the patronage of Europa Nostra and its President Maestro Plácido Domingo who recorded a video message urging people to support this crowd- funding campaign and help save the house where Bizet worked on the orchestration of “Carmen”. Read more “Foundations4Heritage” meetings in Lisbon and Warsaw On 7 April, in Lisbon, Europa Nostra and the Gulbenkian Foundation held the second meeting of “Foundations4Heritage”. 37 representatives from 21 European foundations and other relevant institutions participate in the meeting. On 31 May, in Warsaw, during the Annual Conference of the European Foundation Centre, Europa Nostra presented the European Year of Cultural Heritage and the “Foundations4Heritage” initiative to key European foundations. Read more European Heritage Awards 2018: Apply by 1 October 2017 The EU Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Awards recognise the most outstanding achievements in conservation, research, dedicated service, and education, training and awareness-raising. In 2018, the Awards will be used as a pivotal instrument for promoting the key objectives and messages of the European Year of Cultural Heritage.   • PRESS RELEASE European Experts Release Report for the Rehabilitation
    PRESS RELEASE European experts release report for the rehabilitation of the Prinkipo Greek Orphanage 29 July 2019 - Europa Nostra, the leading heritage organisation in Europe, and the European Investment Bank Institute issued today a technical and financial report comprising an action plan to recover the Greek Orphanage complex, located on Büyükada / Prinkipo, one of the Princes' Islands in the Marmara Sea, forming part of greater Istanbul. The complex was listed among the 7 Most Endangered heritage sites in Europe in 2018, following a nomination made by Europa Nostra Turkey. The report was formulated on the basis of the outcome of the three-day mission to Turkey undertaken on 29-31 May 2019 and on the structural report produced by Clive Dawson, a structural engineer with wide experience of work on historic buildings, who visited the building in April 2019. During the mission, heritage and financial experts from Europa Nostra, Europa Nostra Turkey, the European Investment Bank Institute visited the Orphanage and met with local stakeholders and national authorities – including His All Holiness, Bartholomew, Archbishop of Constantinople New Rome and Ecumenical Patriarch, Members of the of the Princes' Islands Municipality, the Protection Boards of the Ministry of Culture of Istanbul and Ankara and Mr Christian Berger, Ambassador to the EU in Turkey. Non-governmental civil society organisations and other stakeholders also joined the meetings, with the aim of mobilising efforts towards saving this iconic complex of buildings. The complex consists of the main Orphanage and the Secondary School buildings, with more than 15,000 m2 of total floor space. The main building is thought to be the largest wooden construction in Europe and the second largest in the world.

    Europa Nostra applauds the decision for the inscription of Rosia Montana mining landscape on the World Heritage List and on the List of World Heritage in Danger 27 July 2021 On behalf of our large movement of civil society committed to cultural and natural heritage, from all over Europe, including Romania, Europa Nostra congratulates very warmly the State Party and its citizens for the inscription of Rosia Montana mining landscape both on the World Heritage List and simultaneously on the List of World Heritage in Danger. This is a true milestone in the wide mobilization of heritage stakeholders to ensure a sustainable future for this exceptional cultural landscape. We can only applaud the Romanian authorities for their determination to stand by their cultural and natural heritage, to stand by the local community of Rosia Montana, and to stand by the engaging and convincing voices of civil society that have not spared their efforts to campaign to save Rosia Montana. Alongside ICOMOS and other international heritage organizations, Europa Nostra has gladly provided our support to this campaign, among others by placing in 2013 Rosia Montana on our very first List of 7 Most Endangered heritage sites in Europe, run by Europa Nostra with the European Investment Bank Institute. At that time, we were not optimistic about the future of Rosia Montana, but we were impressed by the determination of the local community and civil society not to stop resisting the plan for open-cast gold-mining by a multinational company that would have had a devastating impact on Rosia Montana’s cultural landscape.

    PRESS RELEASE European experts release report for the rehabilitation of Post-Byzantine monuments in Voskopoja and Vithkuqi 13 December 2018 – Europa Nostra, the leading heritage organisation in Europe, and the European Investment Bank Institute issued today a technical and financial report comprising an action plan to restore twelve Post-Byzantine religious buildings in Voskopoja and Vithkuqiin the Korça region in south-east Albania. The religious buildings were listed among the 7 Most Endangered heritage sites in Europe in 2018, following a nomination made by “The Past for the Future” Foundation. The report was formulated on the basis of the outcome of the four-day mission in Albania undertaken on 18-21 September 2018. During the mission, heritage and financial experts from Europa Nostra and the European Investment Bank Institute visited the Post-Byzantine religious structures in Voskopoja and Vithkuqi and met with national authorities – including Evis Kopliku, Director at the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, the Minister of Culture Mirela Kumbaro, the leading representative of the Orthodox Church in Korça, Voskopoja and Vithkuqi Johan Pelushi, non-governmental civil society organisations and other stakeholders –, with the aim of mobilising efforts towards saving these iconic religious buildings. This group of twelve religious buildings comprises ten churches and two monasteries, the earliest dating from the late 14th century and most dating from the 17th and 18th century. These churches represent a new architectural and unique form of basilica combining the Byzantine and Ottoman traditions. The frescos are the most representative of 17th-18th century ecclesiastical art in the Balkans and are masterpieces of the post- Byzantine style.

    JOINT PRESS RELEASE European Investment Bank signs the Berlin Call to Action “Cultural Heritage for the Future of Europe” Hague / Brussels / Luxembourg, 18 January 2019 – The European Investment Bank (EIB), the European Union’s bank and the world’s largest multilateral borrower and lender, signed the Berlin Call to Action “Cultural Heritage for the Future of Europe” at a special ceremony held at the Boghossian Foundation - Villa Empain in Brussels, Belgium. Emma Navarro, Vice-President of the EIB, signed the document and handed it to Europa Nostra’s Executive President Hermann Parzinger in the presence of high-level representatives from the European Investment Bank, the EIB Institute and Europa Nostra as well as the European Commission, the European Economic and Social Committee and members of the European Heritage Alliance 3.3. The Berlin Call to Action was opened to signatures from citizens and organisations committed to the cause of cultural heritage on the occasion of the European Cultural Heritage Summit in Berlin on 22 June 2018. Presented by three European organisations active in the field of cultural heritage, namely Europa Nostra, the German Cultural Heritage Committee (DNK) and the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation (SPK), it seeks to engage the largest possible range of organisations, institutions, governments, civil society actors and individuals in recognising and tapping into the positive and cohesive power of our shared cultural heritage for the Future of Europe. Since its launch in Berlin, this campaigning document has been signed by almost 2,200 people and organisations from all over Europe. At the closing conference of the European Year of Cultural Heritage in Vienna on 7 December 2018, Europa Nostra and the German Cultural Heritage Committee presented the symbolic number of 2,018 signatures to the European Commission.

    Call for Nominations 7 MOST ENDANGERED PROGRAMME 2021 ABOUT THE PROGRAMME The “7 Most Endangered programme” is run by Europa Nostra in partnership with the European Investment Bank Institute. It also has the support of the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union. Launched in 2013, this programme forms part of a civil society campaign to save Europe's endangered heritage. It consists of identifying the most threatened and valuable monuments, sites and cultural landscapes in Europe and mobilising public and private support, both political and financial, to find a viable future for these heritage sites. Overall, the programme raises awareness, prepares independent assessments and proposes recommendations for action. The listing of an endangered site often serves as a catalyst for action and incentive for mobilisation of the necessary public or private support, including funding. Given the fact that heritage sites all over Europe are continuously facing different types of threats and in view of the positive results achieved so far, the programme will now run on a yearly basis, instead of every two years. ABOUT EUROPA NOSTRA Europa Nostra is the European voice of civil society committed to safeguarding and promoting Europe’s cultural and natural heritage. A pan-European federation of heritage NGOs, supported by a wide network of public bodies, private companies and individuals, it covers more than 40 countries.     Urgent call for a holistic protection of the integrity, authenticity, and diversity of the rich multicultural heritage in and around the area of Nagorno-Karabakh Joint Statement by Europa Nostra and the European Association of Archaeologists The Hague / Prague, 6 July 2021 - We, representatives of EUROPA NOSTRA and the European Association of Archaeologists - two large European non-governmental organisations committed to the promotion and protection of cultural heritage that are also active members of the European Heritage Alliance and that collaborate closely with the European Union, the Council of Europe and UNESCO - wish to reiterate our joint commitment to the holistic preservation of the integrity, authenticity and diversity of the rich cultural heritage which is located in the Caucasus region and which is the expression of a multicultural and multireligious past and present of this region and of Europe as a whole. We therefore deplore and condemn any act of damage, destruction or distortion of cultural heritage sites, which has happened as a consequence of a conflict or of the lack of respect for any of the cultures that have flourished in the Caucasus region, and in particular in and around the area internationally known as Nagorno-Karabakh. Referring to many international and European documents, we wish to recall that such acts are clearly not acceptable and unlawful. We firmly believe in the essential value of cultural heritage as a vital resource and responsibility for present generations to pass on to future ones. We recognize and celebrate the cultural diversities as they are represented in our shared heritage; these can help in building bridges of mutual respect and understanding above ethnic or religious divides, as a critical element of building lasting peace.

    PARIS MANIFESTO RELANÇONS L’EUROPE PAR LA CULTURE ET LE PATRIMOINE CULTUREL ! 30/10/20191 WE, REPRESENTATIVES OF THE WORLDS OF CULTURE AND CULTURAL HERITAGE, COMING FROM ALL PARTS OF EUROPE, ASSEMBLED in Paris from 27 to 30 October 2019, on the occasion of the European Cultural Heritage Summit, organised by Europa Nostra, under the high patronage of Mr. Emmanuel Macron, President of the French Republic, in cooperation and with the support of the European Commission and the French Government, as well as in partnership with the Fondation du Patrimoine; ENCOURAGED by the impact of the Berlin Call to Action of 22 June 2018, presented during the European Cultural Heritage Summit in Berlin, and by the positive results of the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018, in particular the adoption of the European Framework for Action on Cultural Heritage by the European Commission in December 2018; APPLAUDING the commitment of the European Council to invest "in culture and our cultural heritage, which are at the heart of our European identity", as included in the new Strategic Agenda for the EU for the next five years (2019-2024) adopted on 20 June 2019; MOVED by the impressive wave of European and international solidarity for the safeguarding of endangered cultural heritage that followed the dramatic fire at the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris on 15 April 2019; solidarity which was confirmed, among other occasions, at the informal meeting of the EU Ministers responsible for Culture and for European Affairs with their adoption of the Paris Declaration on heritage at risk on 3 May 2019; CONCERNED about the rise of extremism and populism as well as of anti- European narrative, which undermine the fundamental values of fraternity and solidarity in Europe; CONSCIOUS of the compelling need to revive the European project - in particular following the likely departure of the United Kingdom from the European Union - by means of a comprehensive and ambitious project, which can both reinforce Europe’s position on the world scene and trigger new impetus for wider popular support.
