View in your browser ENewsletter Summer 2017 #EuropeForCulture Much has happened in Europe with regard to cultural heritage since our last newsletter. On 25 March, EU leaders adopted the Rome Declaration where they “pledge to work towards a Union which preserves our cultural heritage and promotes cultural diversity”. Europa Nostra also welcomed the Florence Declaration of the first ever G7 Ministerial meeting on Culture. This Declaration referred, among others, to the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018, for which the legal and budgetary framework has now been agreed by all EU Institutions. Europa Nostra will be one of the key partners of the European Commission for the Year. We will be supporting and advising the EU Institutions as regards the European Year (official social media campaign: #EuropeForCulture) as a member of the “stakeholders group”, together with members of the European Heritage Alliance 3.3 (such as NEMO, ENCATC, FRH, EHHA etc). Read more Watch Highlights Belgrade Conference: Heritage force for South-East Europe From 15-17 June, in Belgrade, Europa Nostra, Europa Nostra Serbia and South East European Heritage Network held the conference “Cultural Heritage Counts for (South-East) Europe” and capacity-building days on “Education and Citizens Engagement”. These events gathered more than 150 experts and stakeholders from SEE region and other parts of Europe in discussing the approaches and challenges in measuring the impact of cultural heritage on the economy, society, culture and the environment. Read more EU supports “Sharing Heritage - Sharing Values” Project Europa Nostra was selected for EU funding for the implementation of its ambitious network project “Sharing Heritage – Sharing Values” for the next 4 years. In view of the upcoming European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018, the evaluators stressed the relevance of Europa Nostra in mobilising key players in the field of heritage and acknowledged the high quality of the project proposal which scored 89 out of 100 points. Read more Europa Nostra speaks at Culture Council of the EU On 23 May, Europa Nostra addressed the Culture Council of the European Union on the role of culture and cultural heritage for the EU’s external relations. During their meeting, the Culture Ministers from all 28 EU Member States discussed and adopted Council Conclusions on an EU strategic approach to international cultural relations. This is the first time Europa Nostra had been invited to speak at a Council meeting in Brussels and marks a new step in the recognition by EU Institutions of Europa Nostra’s work. Read more Save the House of Bizet in Bougival (France): Contribute to the crowdfunding campaign! 21 June 2017 marked the 20th anniversary of the European Day of Music, and the start of a crowdfunding campaign aiming at mobilising support for the renaissance of Bougival, an historic town near Paris that preserves the memory of great European artists from 19th century. A press conference was held yesterday in Paris under the patronage of Europa Nostra and its President Maestro Plácido Domingo who recorded a video message urging people to support this crowd- funding campaign and help save the house where Bizet worked on the orchestration of “Carmen”. Read more “Foundations4Heritage” meetings in Lisbon and Warsaw On 7 April, in Lisbon, Europa Nostra and the Gulbenkian Foundation held the second meeting of “Foundations4Heritage”. 37 representatives from 21 European foundations and other relevant institutions participate in the meeting. On 31 May, in Warsaw, during the Annual Conference of the European Foundation Centre, Europa Nostra presented the European Year of Cultural Heritage and the “Foundations4Heritage” initiative to key European foundations. Read more European Heritage Awards 2018: Apply by 1 October 2017 The EU Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Awards recognise the most outstanding achievements in conservation, research, dedicated service, and education, training and awareness-raising. In 2018, the Awards will be used as a pivotal instrument for promoting the key objectives and messages of the European Year of Cultural Heritage. Applications for this Special Edition of the Awards can be submitted by 1 October 2017 through the Awards website.
