Brian Buck Travellers Tales has been around the league during pre-season and here are is his views of what he has seen.

27. (11,266) Thursday 31 st July 2014. Potton United Reserves 0 Eastcotts 1 (Friendly Match) (Played at Everton Recreation Ground) att 10 approx. Taking their talents to the local villages Potton hired out Everton Recreation Ground for the evening and no sooner hard the pitch markings dried, after club chairman Alan Riley had marked it out earlier in the afternoon, then we were under way. I’ll be honest and say that although both clubs probably enjoyed this work out, which was played in a good spirit, it wasn’t too much fun for spectators. Neither side could retain possession for long and there were a series of misplaced passes from both sides. The first half was generally even but Potton had a good twenty minutes after the break. Then Eastcotts rallied a bit and just when we had given up all hope of seeing a goal Eastcotts scored on 84 minutes, after the home keeper could only help a glancing header by Glen Tumulty from a free kick into his own net. The only other point worth talking about was the refs obsession with scratching his tits each time he gave a free kick. Perhaps the cards in his pocket were giving him jip!

28. (11,267) Friday 1 st August 2014. Moggerhanger United 0 AFC Rushden & Diamonds Under 21 4 (Friendly Match) (Played at Biggleswade United) att 95 approx. This was rather a strange game, seemingly between two mis-matched sides. The hosts looked rather lethargic when compared with the super fit approach of their guests, who were in effect composed of mainly under 17 or 18 players, despite their playing title. I suspect that it was the first game of the season for both sides and I would have thought that the Diamonds would have had more training sessions than United. It was they who took a 2 nd minute lead which was the half time score. Diamonds had the greater amount of possession but were being well rebuffed by the physically stronger hosts. After the break there were signs for a while that Moggerhanger might score, but that came to nothing when Diamonds scored their second goal on 54 minutes. A third one followed on 61 minutes and then the ref, the returning Andy Medlock, awarded Moggerhanger a spot kick. Predictably the over excited visiting bench disagreed, but the spot kick was paried with the follow up lifted over the bar. Diamonds scored a fourth goal on 81 minutes and after a few disagreements on the pitch this well attended game was brought to a close and both sides will have got something out of it.

35. (11,274) Wednesday 6 th August 2014. Ickwell & Old Warden 1 Renhold United 5 (Jesse Piggott Memorial Trophy Semi Final) (Played at Sandy) att 35 approx. This was my first Jesse Piggott Memorial Trophy match since I saw Wootton Blue Cross beat Ickwell and Old Warden 1-0 on 19 August 2004 in a semi final match in front of about 60 spectators. The scorer that night was the legendary Deep Banghard, taking time off from making porno movies! So here Ickwell were ten years later and they soon found themselves embroiled in a feisty match. There were a few tackles flying around and the ref, who had a good game in so

2 far as the neutrals were concerned, had to deal with a few verbals, mainly from Renhold which led to him enquiring after the name of one of them. After the break it took Renhold just 80 seconds to break the deadlock, with a 30 yard direct free kick. On 59 minutes the lead was doubled by way of a shot which took a huge deflection off a defenders back. Then on 62 minutes came the games controversial moment when a Renhold player chasing a through ball was nudged a bit by the keeper before being brought down by a defender. People watching behind the goal said it was definitely a foul. The ref decided that it was also a red card for the defender. The spot kick was converted. Then Renhold scored again before Dean Hamilton who sometimes plays for Potton United, pulled a goal back for Ickwell. But then Renhold scored again before the end.

36 th game of the season. (Match 11,275) Thursday 7th August 2014. Riseley Sports 0 Clapham Sports 2 (Friendly Match) att 20 approx. This was my first visit here since my only other appearance on 20 April 1994 when in front of about 10 spectators Riseley Sports beat Wootton United 5-0 in a Bedford & District League Division 1 match. It’s good see how the attendances have shot up since those days! At the moment the lady on my sat nav seems to be going through her PMT years and she seemingly managed to take us through just about every village in North Bedfordshire before we finally arrived at the ground, just as they were kicking off, seven minutes early, “because everyone was here!” This turned out to be a busy no friction match, well refereed by a UCL ref who was in a jovial mood. It was also a lovely sunny evening for football in this very rural area and it was warm with no wind. The only problem was that both sides struggled to find the net, especially the hosts who wouldn’t have scored had they still been playing now. They in particular created loads of chances, but I don’t think that either keeper had a shot on target to save all evening. But we did get goals, thanks largely to the home keeper. On 34 minutes he was slow to react to a back pass and under pressure hoofed the ball upfield. However it went straight to ex-Chelsea player Mario Esposito (according to his registration form) who shot home into a now unguarded net. The score stayed this was until the very last minute when the keeper was beaten by a thirty yarder which just slipped through his grasp at the far post. If only the ball had taken longer to reach his dive! There was one amusing incident when a ball got stuck up a tree. A Riseley sub tried to get it down by spearing it with a corner flag. Amazingly he succeeded and was immediately brought on as a reward!

41 st game of the season. (Match 11,280) Monday 11 th August 2014. Sandy Reserves 1 Kempston Hammer Sports 2 (Friendly Match) att 40 approx. With there not being that much on tonight I settled for this local match. Once again the man in charge was Andy Medlock, who told me recently that on his (welcome) return to refereeing he was only going to ref the odd game. Well, he seems to be doing just about every match I see in Bedfordshire! Neither side gave him any trouble and there was hardly a foul, let alone a bad one, in the whole match. You just had a gut feeling that he was desperate to blow his whistle, but couldn’t find a reason, partly because there wasn’t that much actually happening! Both sides were knocking the ball around well but goal scoring chances were at a premium. The visitors, who for the most part probably shaded it as the better side, took the lead on 22 minutes when a shot hit the far post and then crossed the line before it was cleared. Mr Medlock was in the perfect position to see this. The game then had its moments before Kempston doubled their lead on 80 minutes. Then just as we had finished saying, “Where’s a Sandy goal coming from?” then one did. The brother of the chap who owns a chip shop in the town scored with a either a well plaiced shot or a cods wallop, depending on your point of view. Haddock they scored earlier then I might have been whiting a different report

43. (11,282) (3,334) Wednesday 13 th August 2014. Eastcotts 4 Pavenham 0 (Friendly Match) (Played at Sharnbrook Upper School) att 7. For much of the first half I could name the crowd here as they consisted of my car load of passengers! But then three more people turned up and the touchline started to get rather claustrophobic! This was a match between two Bedfordshire County League Premier Division sides and this venue will be Eastcotts home ground for the season. It’s not bad either, even though it’s a school ground. Bordered by a 3G pitch on one side the pitch is cut out of a gentle hill, so we watched the game from the top of the banking on the other side of the pitch. So it’s rather rural here. Last season

3 when I visited Pavenham James Owen scored six times for them, but he had a bit of an injury and played in goal instead. By the end he probably got back ache picking the ball out of the net! His side could only field 11 players throughout whereas Eastcotts had subs which they rotated. Despite this they gave a good account of themselves until the tired after the break. In the first half no one could score although Eastcotts had some good chances, one of which caused the lino to say, “He did well to miss that one!” Then on 53 minutes Hayden Powell opened the scoring for Eastcotts. When we suggested that he might be the brother of Baden Powell to the lino, his response was, “I don’t know, I was never asked to join the Brownies!” Soon Pavenham wilted and by the 81 st minute they were winning 4-0. Then two minutes later one of the Pavenham players had a problem with the ref and rather than sin bin him for the rest of the match the ref chose to give him a red card instead.

44. (11,283) Thursday 14 th August 2014. Roxton 4 Great Barford 1(Friendly Match) att 13. Had this match been played in Sandy, from where I picked up my passengers, then it might not have started as there was in effect a cloudburst at about 6pm. Sandy High Street was flooded to the point where it was almost too deep to navigate. But as we headed northwards so the rain was less intense and by the time we got to the ground it had stopped. They’d already had it here, but despite this the pitch was perfect and proved to be an excellent playing surface. The match started about ten minutes late and perhaps this was why the ref reduced the playing time to 40 minutes each way. Barford started with just nine players and we mused if the remaining two, who appeared a minute later, had struggled to find the ground, which is in the next village to theirs! I’d seen a game here once before, on 26 April 1993 when Roxton drew 1-1 with Duke Inn Sports in a Bedford & District League Division 4 match, att 15 approx. I’m not sure if the brick dugouts they have now were there then. These days Roxton are a Sunday side. The first half of this match was a frantic, even, fast paced affair and both sides created lots of chances which only just failed to find the next. But within 19 seconds of the restart Roxton scored and then added a third goal 12 minutes later. By now I’d noticed some cows in the field behind the goal inspecting a stray ball which had come their way. One of them nudged it and seemed to find it tasty. Perhaps the only time you’ll see a cow ball licking! Meanwhile, back on the pitch Barford pulled a goal back on 65 minutes but Roxton scored again three minutes later, completing the scorers hattrick. By now Barford, who had no subs, were tiring and they shipped another goal five minutes later.

45. (11,284) Friday 15 th August 2014. Wootton Blue Cross 2 Stotfold Reserves 1 (Friendly Match) att 25 approx. This was my first visit to Weston Park for a couple of seasons and the first thing I noticed (apart from the fact that the chip shop is still right next door) is that the butchered trees have regrown to their former height and the ground looks all the better for it. We knew the ref tonight. He was the chap with the long hair and a matching black scarf to hold it down. His partner turned up to watch and she told me that he is developing a paunch! I couldn’t quite see where this was though. With me being an expert on paunches he looked perfectly normal to me! The match belonged to a vibrant Wootton side in the first half, but it was Stotfold, the Langford reserves of last season, who scored first on 9 minutes. But within four minutes the hosts were level when Mallett hammered home the equaliser. For the remainder of the half Wootton dominated proceedings and went very close to regaining the lead on a number of occasions. After the break Stotfold improved for a bit. I think that words may have been said. But then the game became even. The winning goal came on 83 minutes when three players beat the Stotfold offside trap and when one of them scored there was no other visiting player within 30 yards of them, apart from their keeper!

50. (11,289) Thursday 21 st August 2014. Moggerhanger United 3 Fairfield Park 3 (Friendly Match) (Played at Dunton) (6.45pm kick off) att 15 approx. it’s been a couple of years since my last visit here and I’m pleased to report that the place has been spruced up a bit. There’s been an extension to the clubhouse and it’s nice inside now. The car park has been expanded and the grass on the pitch has actually been cut, all of which makes this a pleasant venue for football these days. The first half of this match was quite feisty and there were minor skirmishes on 26 and 36 minutes of this 40 minutes each way match. The visitors, a newly formed Hitchin Sunday League side, took the lead on 4 minutes but Moggerhanger equalised on 36 minutes, whilst we were trying to retrieve a loose ball in the hedge. But Fairfield, who were easily the better side in the first period, regained the lead on the stroke of half time. After the break Moggerhanger played well for a bit but then faded, allowing Fairfield

4 to go 3-1 up on 66 minutes. But they too then faded causing one of their players to shout out, “Keep our composure!” Some of the crowd wondered if either side had shown any throughout the match! So then a belatedly revitalised Mogerhanger equalised with two late goals, one from the spot. A good work out for both sides with the goals making it seem better than it was.

There was no such good fortune on the road for two of the other newly promoted clubs. Preview for Saturday 6th September 2014

For the Premier Division supported by Sportsform league leaders AFC Turvey its the beginning of life at their new home base of Thurleigh Playing Fields when visited by Ickwell & Old Warden. Whilst it's home encounters also for the two clubs who trail them on goal difference only, Renhold United at their Playing Field headquarters receiving a visit from Pavenham for whom it will be the opening game of their campaign.Whilst Marston Shelton Rovers go into their own Playing Field action against Sandy.

8 Also still with a 100% record like the top three clubs albeit after just one game are Flitwick Town who travel to face still unbeaten Shefford Town & Campton at their new Hitchin Road complex. Whilst at Lodge Road, host Sharnbrook and visitors AFC Oakley M&DH both look to retain their seasons unbeaten ways.

Meantime depending on the result in midweek at Weston Park all four clubs in the other two games could be going in search of their first point/points of the season. At Sharnbrook Upper School, Eastcotts AFC receive a visit from Wilstead and at Hurst Grove, Lidlington United Sports who are involved in that midweek action at Weston Park face AFC Kempston Town & Bedford College.

Talking of Weston Park, that will be the venue at which Wootton Blue Cross go into home FA Vase action against South Midlands League Premier Division side Biggleswade United.who in having progress two rounds in this seasons FA Cup will be no easy nut to crack.

In Division One its a start to the season for Elstow Abbey who travel to Rectory Road to be hosted by Shefford Town & Campton Reserves. Whilst for the second week running Marabese Ceramics are involved in the divisions game of the week when they travel to Crawley Road to face Cranfield United.

Also on the road for the second weekend running are Bedford SA who journey to Everton Playing Fields to be hosted by Great Barford and Henlow who are en route to Miller Road and a meeting with Meltis Albion.

Other action comes on the 3G surface at Hillgrounds where AFC Kempston Town & Bedford College Reserves host Sundon Park Rangers and at King George VI Playing Fields the new home base for AFC Oakley M&DH Reserves this season who receive a visit from AFC Harlington.

In Division Two, perhaps the game of the day on paper should be the Greenfield Road clash between hosts Westoning and the visitors Clapham Sports as both clubs started out with wins last weekend but you can depend that the locals will be out in force at Wootton Playing Fields for Wootton Village's home local derby clash with Marston Shelton Rovers Reserves. You would not put money on this game attracting a smaller attendance than the FA Vase action across the road at Weston Park.

Over at the Hockey Centre, Bedford United will be in home action against Moggerhanger United, whilst at the Warren, Elstow Abbey Reserves receive a visit from FC Houghton.

Over at Stevington Playing Fields home side Stevington will be looking for another home win when called upon by Kempston Hammers Sports, a remark that also applies at Miller Road where Meltis Albion Reserves play hosts to Kempston Con Club Sports.

Down at Cutler Hammer, Renhold United Reserves will be the visitors to face hosts Kempston Athletic and at Jubilee Playing Fields there will be the seeking of their first point/points of the season for both hosts Wilstead Reserves and visitors Caldecote Reserves.

In Division three its home games to kick off both Lea Sports PSG and Ickwell & Old Warden Reserves seasons.PSG at their Pirton Recreation ground headquarters hosting Caldecote U20 for whom its also a seasons start and on The Green, FC Serbia are the visitors to face Ickwell & Old Warden Reserves.
