DAVID GROSSMAN Hans Christian Andersen Author Award 2020 Nominated by IBBY Israel A statement on the Grossman contribution to literature for children and young people. David Grossman (born in Jerusalem, 1954) is a major figure in contemporary Hebrew literature. He writes for older and younger readers, in alternating order: Following every adult book, Grossman publishes a book for younger readers, followed by an adult book, etc. In his literary and journalistic writing Grossman does not shy away from complicated and controversial issues. He fights for the human rights of people of all ages, genders, and ethnicities. He is active in social justice causes and in peace initiatives between Arabs and Jews. In 1982 he published his first children’s book, Duel, about a twelve- year-old boy who makes friends with an elderly man in a nursing home. His writing for children and young adults encompasses a wide range of topics. In his picture books, he focuses on aspects of children’s daily life (Uri’s Special Language; A Brand-New Baby Brother) or their rich and wonderful imaginations, which can generate all sorts of fears (Itamar Walks on Walls; Itamar Meets a Rabbit, Itamar the Dream Hunter), worries (Don’t Worry Ruti, Itamar the Dream Hunter), or fantasies, sometimes involving imaginary friends (Hadas’ Friend). In Grossman’s picture books, the child’s world contains an empathic adult, the father, who respects the child, listens to him lovingly, and is able to suggest an unusual solution to the difficulty confronting the child, which the child is in turn quick to accept (the Itamar books; Who Wants a Piggy-Back?, Don’t Worry Ruti, etc.) In his writing for young adults Grossman deals with complicated issues, including ones that were considered taboo in the young adult Hebrew literature of their day. -

Neve Shalom -Wahat al Salam ANNUAL REPORT 2020 A Message from the Director Dear Friends, As a graduate of the School for Peace and staff member for the last fourteen years, I was honored to have received the support and confidence of the staff and board of the NSWAS educational institutions in being chosen as the new director of the School for Peace. I began in October 2020 with the challenge of filling Nava's 'big shoes' and building the direction for the future. I'm happy to say that I feel very much at home and look forward to carrying the organization forward. The arson attack at the SFP this September left us with the big challenge of rebuilding the school and raising the necessary funds. I am happy to say that after the fire we were able to quickly organize and find additional space in the village to continue our important work. The support we received from all of our friends in the region and abroad helped us once again realize how significant the School for Peace is to all of us. The political situation in the country reminds us on a daily basis that there are few places where Jews and Palestinians can meet and work together as equals and the uniqueness of our work and methodology has become much more apparent and indispensable. In the coming years, the SFP will work to help our graduates become more active and influential in peace activities. Based on our unique voice, we will strengthen our connections with peace activists nationally and internationally as we continue operating our important programs. -

A Quiet Revolution by Mary Elizabeth King Twenty years ago, in December 1987, Palestinians in the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem launched a massive nonviolent social mobilization against the Israeli military occupation that had begun in 1967. A pivotal moment in contemporary world history, new political thinking manifested itself in nonviolent action despite the ever-present threat of Israeli reprisal. A decades-long spread of knowledge about nonviolent strategies throughout Palestinian society shaped the uprising. It was not a spontaneous rebellion as many perceived, but a movement by virtually an entire society working to lift a military occupation with the same nonviolent methods used in India by Gandhi, by the U.S. civil rights movement, in the Czech and Slovaks’ velvet revolution, by the Serbian activists who brought down Slobodan Milošević, and by Buddhist monks with upturned alms bowls in Burma. In this struggle within a struggle, a history until now untold, for more than two years the Palestinians refused to use firearms against the Israeli soldiers and armed settlers in their midst. From the 1987 uprising would emerge the most cogent pressure to date to create a Palestinian state alongside Israel, with implied acceptance of the latter’s permanence. Following the incarceration or deportation of the activist intellectuals who had helped bring about the new political thinking that nurtured the intifada, the movement disintegrated into violence. Yet reclamation of such nonviolent strategies is the key to enduring peace in this conflict. The intifada manifested highly significant shifts in organization, political thinking, leadership, and purpose. The Palestinians inside the territories occupied by Israel in 1967 determined in essence to discard a tradition of armed struggle—which included some of the twentieth century’s most notorious attacks on civilian and military targets—in favor of nonviolent methods of struggle last utilized in the 1920s and 1930s. -

I'm sure we're all anxiously watching events in S. Africa in the hope that the transition will be as peaceful as possible. Of course events in the north over the past week also add to one's daily worries. A bit difficult to talk about holidays and having a good time under such circumstances, but 1 suppose life must carry on and maybe "dafka" because of the daily strain you owe it to yourself to take a break every now and then!!! After the few blasts in Turkey, there has been a definite drop off in interest. The best deals are still to be had to Antalya, Marmaris etc. where a week's package H/Board can be had for approx. $585.- II! The Greek Islands of Rhodes, Crete, Samos, Santorini and Corfu are all being serviced by direct charter flights this summer with packages from $650 - $990 depending on type of hotel etc. With El-Al starting direct flights to Paphos in Cyprus its also become very popular this year with very inexpensive 3 nite 4 nite or 7 nite packages at beautiful hotels. All the above should carry on until the middle of October. SAA announced this week that as of beginning of September they are starting to fly twice a week to Jhb — on Monday and Wednesday, both flights in a 767. Enclosed please find a completed IRS Form 211.. Further, I am respectfully submitting this memorandum to elaborate on the factual and legal aspects of the enclosed IRS whistleblower complaint. In addition, I am enclosing a CD which contains the full, unannotated versions of the documents attached as Exhibits hereto. 1. Who is New Israel Fund? New Israel Fund (“NIF”) is a District of Columbia non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation with its principal place of business in the State of New York, county of New York. NIF financially supports many companies that work to undermine the state of Israel. As set forth in more detail below, NIF has crossed the line from permissible advocacy to unlawful "electioneering." Put another way, NIF is violating the tax codes by attempting to influence the outcome of elections. As stated on its own web site, NIF works on its “concerted campaign to equip Israel’s pro-democracy and progressive forces with the tools to fight Israel’s regressive right-and win.” As set forth in more detail below, NIF's activities are flagrant and unlawful electioneering in violation of the tax code. 2. Who is the Whistleblower? I am a New York attorney and political activist who regularly engages in pro- Israel litigation in state and federal Court.
