COVID-19 vaccine update • If you have applied online or through the phone booking number, please be reassured that you will be on the waiting list for an appointment. Over 6,000 staff across Grampian have already applied for the vaccine. Organising these clinics to match with vaccine supply and vaccinators is extremely challenging. The clinics in ARI & the 3 H&SCPs are now up and running. If you have not heard from the booking team, please don't worry - we will get to you. Many areas are also running Peer-Peer sessions, over 600 vaccinations were given to staff yesterday, an amazing achievement! Thank you for your patience. • If you are at all unwell, please do not attend work, even if you have a vaccine appointment scheduled. Peer and clinic vaccinators have the authorisation to make a clinical judgement and will not immunise staff members if they are unfit to receive the jab. Please respect this decision. In the event of anyone becoming unwell immediately after receiving their immunisation, staff should contact 2222 and follow the usual process. Extension of asymptomatic staff testing As highlighted in Monday’s brief, we will shortly be extending the asymptomatic staff testing programme, using Lateral Flow Devices. This will be rolled out in a phased manner, as follows: • Patient facing staff who are already receiving PCR tests (oncology, Medicine for the Elderly long stay, MH&LD long stay). NOTE this will NOT replace the PCR test but is in addition to it. • Out-patient patient facing staff • Dr Gray’s Hospital patient facing staff Over the next few days we will advise patient facing staff (in the above groups) how to pre-populate their details on a web-form.

    ©JSR2006/2009 Historic telescopes at the University of Aberdeen Historic telescopes at the University of Aberdeen Notes by Dr John S. Reid, Cruickshank Lecturer in Astronomy & Meteorology, Department of Physics. Jan 2006. Astronomy has always fascinated people of vision and imagination and it is both appropriate and fitting that some aspects of astronomy have been taught to students at the University of Aberdeen for many centuries. We have never had a separate Department of Astronomy but astronomy still forms a significant element of our degrees in Physics. Courses are also given at both levels 1 and 2 that are aimed at a wide range of BSc students and scientifically interested MA students. There are records over the centuries of interested staff acquiring telescopes on behalf of the University, extending right back to the early days in which telescopes could be purchased, namely the first quarter of the 18th century. We still possess and treasure a significant collection of historical telescopes. Not all of the recorded telescopes survive but we have by way of ‘compensation’ three late eighteenth century and nineteenth century instruments for which no acquisition records have yet been found. Over the centuries many observations have been conducted from University grounds, windows and rooftops but the University has built three observatories in the past two-and-a- half centuries. Only one survives, that on the roof of the Cromwell Tower of King’s College. The first observatory was built by Marischal College at the Castlehill in the final quarter of the eighteenth century using funds raised by public subscription.

    On the panellists Professor Sarah Barrow Sarah Barrow is Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Arts and Humanities and Professor in Film and Media at the University of East Anglia, UK. Prior to this post which she took up at end July 2017, she was Deputy Head of the College of Arts at the University of Lincoln, university lead for the city’s cultural strategy and part of the group that founded and ran the city’s Festival of Digital Cultures. At UEA, she represents the Faculty and University as a Board member on a number of cultural organisations across the city of Norwich, and is a Trustee of the national body for media literacy. Sarah’s research focuses on the relationships between cinema, state, society and violence in Peru has been published in a range of books, edited collections, journal special issues, online projects and encyclopedia entries, with a forthcoming monograph on Peruvian cinema and the Shining Path (I. B. Tauris, 2017). Professor Sir Ian Diamond FBA FRSE FAcSS Professor Sir Ian Diamond is Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Aberdeen, an appointment he has held since 1 April 2010. He was previously Chief Executive of the Economic and Social Research Council. He was also Chair of the Research Councils UK Executive Group (2004- 2009) the umbrella body that represents all seven UK Research Councils. Before joining the ESRC, Sir Ian was Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Southampton, where he had been for most of his career.
