eujacksonville.com | july 26-august 1, 2007 21 bringing it home album review

Artist: Bonerama Title: Bringing It Home

Billing themselves as “The Masters of New Orleans Brass Funk Rock,” Bonerama starts off their album, Bringing It Home, the way a funk album should start, with a live introduction ala James Brown. In fact, the entire album was recorded live at Tipitina’s Uptown in New Orleans, but it doesn’t have any of the pitfalls of a live recording. By the tone and texture of the recording, you’d think it was recorded in a studio if it weren’t for the muted applause between songs and the palpable live energy of this rock- ass band. Bonerama was formed in the late 80s by Mark Mullins and Craig Klein, who were in the horn section that backed up crooner Harry Connick Jr. Although there are fi ve trombones in this ballsy brass section, they also have a sousaphone player, keyboards, a funked up drummer and even a guitarist. Bringing It Home is brassy, bawdy, and overfl owing with funk, but it doesn’t leave the rock out. They cover Led Zeppelin’s ‘Ocean’ better than any rock band ever has. Not only does guitarist Bert Cotton hold up the Zep licks, but the incorporation of some funky brass really kicks this number up a hot degree. Although ‘Oceans’ and the other fi rst three tracks are instrumental, the band does get up on the mic in that casual, secondary way that jazz groups sometimes toss in a vocal. This album is a fun listen from the calloused hands of serious players that know their instruments. It rocks, it rolls, and it slides. Catch them live at MoJos Kitchen on Beach Blvd on August 3rd. - BY JON BOSWORTH

western xterminator album review

Artist: RTX Title: Western Xterminator Label: Drag City

First, a little history that might help you appreciate the offerings of RTX: The founding member of RTX is , one-half of encyclopedic rock group . Along with her then-boyfriend , she helped start Drag City Records while using Royal Trux to explore and recreate a variety of distinctive rock n’ roll styles. For those of you interested in local rock trivia, Herrema has been known to play with drummer and visual artist Chris Pyle, son of Lynyrd Skynyrd drummer Artimus Pyle. Western Exterminator, the latest record from RTX, fi nds the band mired in the predominant sounds of 1985, which is not at all unusual for Herrema. Royal Trux were all about glorifying rock genres, and RTX certainly picks up where they left off. In fact, many of the songs on Western Xtermina- tor are so true to the past, that they would have ruled the stage at LA’s famed Whiskey a Go Go. The album begins with a strange ethnic dirge that in no way signals the rest of the album. Eventu- ally, the gentle sounds of the fi rst song fade out, and the crisp distorted guitar riff that follows it sets the real tone. Herrema’s voice is perfect for the hard rock that accompanies it. She has the vocal power and range required of a lead singer, while her unique whine fl avors the music with an attitude that doesn’t just reproduce 80s rock; it recreates it. That’s the real key to RTX’s charm. Even if you no longer enjoy hearing Ratt or the Crüe, you’ll appreciate how expertly RTX creates new music that actually sounds like it isn’t. This is not a cheesy cover band putting out an album of unwanted originals. They write good songs with good musicianship. It almost seems like they don’t realize it’s not 1985, but we know they must because they cover ‘Money will Roll Right In’ by Mudhoney. If you long for the attitude and style of those bygone days, then you’ll love what RTX has made. RTX picks up right where Royal Trux left off, not only in name but in spirit. - BY DONALD DUSINBERRE
