Children, families and young people engaged with nature through new public programs, tours, major events, and learning and participation projects. The science and horticultural teams studied and propagated threatened species, and contributed to key conservation and biodiversity goals for the state. This leading team of experts continued to safeguard plants and plant knowledge for the benefit of the people of our city, state and beyond, maintaining the important living collections at both Gardens as sanctuary for the engagement and wellbeing of all visitors.     Chapter Flowering of Sweet Cherries “Prunus avium” in Tunisia Thouraya Azizi-Gannouni and Youssef Ammari Abstract In Tunisia, the development of cherry growing is limited by two major constraints, namely, the chilling requirements and the self-incompatibility of some cultivars. In order to contribute to the development of this high added-value culture, which is capable to play an important socioeconomic role in rural and semi-forestry places, this study has set the main objective, characterization, and selection of best-suited cultivars to mild winter based on the blooming period. The plant materials used for this study are composed of the introduced cultivars, which are “Napoleon,” “Van,” “Moreau,” “Sunburst,” and “Stella,” and unknown cultivars, which are “V1,” “V2,” “V3,” “V4,” and “V5,” and a local one “Bouargoub.” Differential behavior between cultivars was shown for phenological stages (budbreak, flowering, maturity, and leaf fall), and this behavior is dependent in some cases on the cold requirement [chilling requirements (CR)]. The local cultivar “Bouargoub” recorded the lowest “CR” with early flowering and maturity. Keywords: behavior, chilling requirement, flowering, mild winter 1. Introduction Sweet cherry tree is a hardy species capable of adapting to various soil and climatic conditions; but its development is surrounded by climatic and physiologi- cal constraints. The sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) from Rosaceae family, with a number of chromosomes (2n = 2x = 16), is an allogamous species that is adopted to a self-incompatibility system to ensure cross-fertilization. Self-compatibility in sweet cherry occurs rarely in nature and, consequently, there are a reduced number of self-compatible cultivars [1].

    SKETCH OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN AMERICAN AND EASTERN ASIAN FRUITS. By L. H. BAILEY, Jr., Professor of HorUculture, Cornell University^ Ithaca, N. Y, The fact must have struck every thoughtful horticulturist that Japan is now the most prolific source of profitable new types of fruits and hardy ornamental plants. The recent extension of communication with that country explains the introduction of these plants, but it does iiot account for the almost uniform success which attends their cultivation in this country. There must be some striking similarity between the climates and other conditions of Japan and America to enable plants from the very antipodes to thrive at once upon their introduction here. It is well known among naturalists that this similarity in climate exists, and that, therefore, there is general accord in the fauna and flora of Japan and eastern America. The origin of this resemblance was most strikingly explained by the late Asa Gray, professor of botany in Har- vard University, so long ago as 1859. But this relationship of Japan and America, with the practical deductions which follow an under- standing of it, has never been presented in its horticultural aspects. Before proceeding to a discussion of Gray's argumentative paper, it should be explained that half a century ago there was no satisfactory explanation of the means by which plants and animals have become widely disseminated over the earth. This was particularly true respect- ing the curious phenomena of disconnected distributions, or the fact that some species occur in widely separated and isolated places. Cer- tain plants occur only in eastern America and in Japan, and there may be no other representatives of the genus extant 5 that is, the genus is monotypic and has a peculiarly disjointed distribution.
