  • Thomas Dolby to Tour UK with “The Invisible Lighthouse Live”
Tel: +44 (0)7779 109540 Email: [email protected] www.tracygoslingpr.com PRESS RELEASE – THOMAS DOLBY IN ASSOCIATION WITH BLUE DOLPHIN FILMS PRESENTS: ‘THE INVISIBLE LIGHTHOUSE TOUR’ SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER 2013 TICKETS: £20.00 & £25 London "Touching… Evocative… Beautiful"– JJ Abrams “Spellbinding”– Richard Blade (XM Sirius Radio) Thomas Dolby, musician, record producer and, now, award winning independent film-maker will be touring the UK in September and October 2013. The British Synth player had chart success in the 1980s with hits like ‘Windpower’, ‘Hyperactive!’ and ‘She Blinded Me With Science’. The Invisible Lighthouse Tour sees Dolby take his latest film project on the road, and present it to audiences as a unique theatrical experience. Combining his music and art in one breath-taking show, the tour will focus on some of the UK’s most historic arthouse cinemas. There is a mysterious island across the water off the East Anglian coast that, during its chequered history, has been an airfield, a military testing ground for experimental weapons and home to the main transmission network for the BBC World Service. On the tip of the island is a beautiful lighthouse. “Since I was a small child, I have fallen asleep, at night, to the soothing periodic flash of the light on my bedroom wall.” – THOMAS DOLBY But, now, it is about to be closed down. TRACY GOSLING PR Like many lighthouses around the world, it’s becoming obsolete as ships adopt satellite navigation. With global warming and beach erosion threatening its very foundations, it’s soon going to be a pile of rubble left to fall into the North Sea.

  • Yahoo! Music Gets Into the Groove with Beatnik Groovegrams Contest
Yahoo! Music Gets Into The Groove With Beatnik GrooveGrams Contest Fans Can Win Prizes By Remixing Songs From Britney Spears, Puff Daddy, 'Weird Al' Yankovic, Lou Bega, and Others SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- November 22, 1999 -- Millions of listeners have heard tunes from today's hottest chart-topping artists. Now, those acts want to hear the fans' versions of their songs. Starting today, through the Yahoo!® Music Beatnik GrooveGrams Contest (http://music.yahoo.com), fans have an opportunity to submit remixed versions of songs by Britney Spears, Moby, "Weird Al" Yankovic, Thomas Dolby and others. Many of the artists themselves will choose weekly contest winners and one grand-prize winner, and all winners will be announced and showcased on a special promotional page on Yahoo! Music. Within the next two weeks, music lovers will also be able to remix songs by other artists, including Puff Daddy and Lou Bega, both among Billboard's Top 10 artists, as well as rock legends Blondie and Yes. The contest runs through January 2000. "Fans are always looking for ways of connecting with their favorite stars-the Yahoo! Music Beatnik GrooveGrams Contest is the ultimate in fan-celebrity interaction," said Matt Rightmire, general manager of media, Yahoo! Inc. "This contest on Yahoo! Music, along with other remixes and music self-publishing tools on Yahoo! Digital, gives fans a new forum for becoming more of the entertainer than the entertained." "This GrooveGrams Contest illustrates how artists such as Puff Daddy and 'Weird Al' value interactive remixes as a creative and promotional tool to keep their fans engaged on a Web page, rather than downloading from one," said Thomas Dolby Robertson, Chief Beatnik of Beatnik.

  • Dance Hype in Video—A Positive Or Negative Force?
Curriculum Units by Fellows of the Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute 1984 Volume V: American Adolescents in the Public Eye Dance Hype in Video—A Positive or Negative Force? Curriculum Unit 84.05.02 by Jan Johnson Teachers Who Use This Unit Should be Sensitive to the Strict Rules Governing the Copyright Protection of Songs, Lyrics and Music. This unit is designed to explore the fascinating world of M.T.V. Violent, sexual, confusing video messages bombard the tuned in senses 24 hours a day. How are these suggestive verbal, musical and visual communications effecting the fluctuating emotional rhythms of our youth? It will take years of research to begin to find an answer. Video is a whole new concept of advertising. Hidden Persuaders by Vance Packard and Subliminal Seduction by Wilson Bryan Key have clued us in to many of the manipulative techniques advertisers have used for years. M.T.V. has left out none in their constant hype to sell new and presently popular rock and roll recordings. “Inside M.T.V.”, an article in Rolling Stone magazine (12/8/83), tells us in great detail what is going on in this fairly new media: The hypnotic quality of regular T.V. programming is multiplied through the carefully planned out structure. Free of any opposing views, M.T.V. directs its propaganda to a generation that was brought up on T.V. and rock and roll. The senses are constantly charged with visual expressions of fantasy and reality that are indistinguishable from each other. Videos and pop music are phenomena that relate extremely well to academic subjects.

  • What Were the Forces That Led to the Rise of New Wave?
Are We Not New Wave? Modern Pop at the Turn of the 1980s Theo Cateforis http://www.press.umich.edu/titleDetailDesc.do?id=152565 The University of Michigan Press, 2011 Q&A with Theo Cateforis, author of Are We Not New Wave? Modern Pop at the Turn of the 1980s New wave emerged at the turn of the 1980s as a pop music movement cast in the image of punk rock's sneering demeanor, yet rendered more accessible and sophisticated. Artists such as the Cars, Devo, the Talking Heads, and the Human League leapt into the Top 40 with a novel sound that broke with the staid rock clichés of the 1970s and pointed the way to a more modern pop style. In Are We Not New Wave? Theo Cateforis provides the first musical and cultural history of the new wave movement, charting its rise out of mid- 1970s punk to its ubiquitous early 1980s MTV presence and downfall in the mid-1980s. The book also explores the meanings behind the music's distinctive traits—its characteristic whiteness and nervousness; its playful irony, electronic melodies, and crossover experimentations. Cateforis traces new wave's modern sensibilities back to the space-age consumer culture of the late 1950s/early 1960s. Theo Cateforis is Assistant Professor of Music History and Cultures in the Fine Arts Department at Syracuse University. His research is in the areas of American Music, Popular Music Studies, and Twentieth-Century Art Music. He was editor of the anthology The Rock History Reader. The University of Michigan Press: What were the forces that led to the rise of new wave? Theo Cateforis: New wave initially circulated as a synonym for the punk rock movement that emerged in the mid-1970s.
