2 Gwella Inspection Report (under Section 50 of the Education Act 2005) YSGOL LLANDDOGED A Church in Voluntary Controlled primary School , Conwy, LL32 8YB

Diocese : St. Asaph Date of Inspection: 11 and 14.6.2012 Local Authority: Conwy School's unique number: 662/3039 Head : Mr. Gwynn Griffith Gwella Inspector: The Rev’d Robert Townsend

1 School context Ysgol Llanddoged is the village school for Llanddoged and the surrounding rural area. The school is a natural Welsh school, and most of the pupils come from the wide catchment area, or the nearby town of Llanrwst. Just under half the parents state that the church status of the school was important to them in choosing a school for their children, but they all believe that the school is rooted in Christian values, which reflects the homely character of the school, which is also a focal point for the community around it.

2 The distinctiveness and effectiveness of Ysgol Llanddoged as a Church in Wales school are good Ysgol Llanddoged is a good church school. Provision for pupils' spiritual development is good, as is recognised – boys as well as girls – and pupils have a healthy and enthusiastic attitude to learning. The school succeeds in creating a nappy and caring atmosphere, and which encourages pupils to fulfil their potential.

3 Established strengths 1 The content of worship 2 The good contribution of religious education to the school's Christian character 3 Pupils’ spiritual development 4 Pupils’ knowledgeable responses in worship and religious education 5 Pupils’ behaviour and caring nature 6 The schools’ role and contribution to the local community 7 Pupils’ very positive attitude towards learning 8 The connections with the parish, diocese and local ministers, especially during a period without a vicar

4 Focus for development 1 Respond in full to the recommendations of the previous Section 50 inspection 2 Develop a general structure/framework for worship throughout the school 3 Make the school’s Christian character more visible 4 Further develop the school’s self-evaluation of itself as a church school

5 The school, through its distinctive Christian character, is good at meeting the needs of all learners In seeing how the pupils care for each other and mix when playing, as well as listening to their pride and humility when talking about their successes at the Urdd Eisteddfod and national sporting competitions, it is obvious that the school’s values and Christian character contribute much to the pupils’ development. It would be possible for the school to make it’s Christian character more visible around the school, in a way which also helps to sustain pupils’ spiritual development as well.

6 The impact of collective worship on the school community is good Thanks to the detailed planning and recording as well as the preparation and content, worship is a positive experience for pupils and an essential part of school life. There are creative examples of using Christian people from the last century and their beliefs and linking them appropriately with current events and the Holy Spirit, for example. Worship throughout the school needs to be given a structure, especially at the beginning and end (using sentences and responses, for example). In classroom worship a better focus is required along with consideration on how to denote the holy time of worship. All acts of worship need to include a period of silence to allow pupils a time to reflect.

7 The effectiveness of the religious education is good The school has worked hard to ensure that religious education has its rightful place in the school's curriculum. Thorough planning makes the most of cross-curricula links and encourages pupils to develop their skills. Information technology is used well and lessons are exciting. Pupil's knowledge and achievement is good, and their readiness to respond in lessons reflects their positive attitude towards learning. The use of the Bible and reflection is good, and contributes much to the impact of religious education and the Christian character of the school. The school’s education and Christian values have played a part in learners’ moral development, and they have a clear understanding of the principles of Fair Trade as well as being aware of the need to help those who are less fortunate in our world.

8 The effectiveness of the leadership and management of the school as a church school is adequate The prospects for the school to continue improving is adequate During the time that the local parish has been waiting for a new vicar, the school deserves praise for the way in which it has worked to maintain a links with the local parish and local ministers, as well as with the Bishop’s Visitor. Indeed the school has succeeded to continue with its foremost role in several events in the local Parish Church throughout the year. The school has begun the process of evaluating itself as a church school, but this need sto be further developed. Even though some elements of the schools documentation is good, the school has not responded to the recommendations of the previous Section 50 inspection. The school is asked to work with the Diocese and present an action plan to the Diocesan Board of Education or Schools’ Committee and show how it will respond t the recommendations of this report as well as the previous one.
