1100 22008008 OOUTLOOKUTLOOK

Th e 2008 Concordia University volleyball team will be trying to overcome the loss of several key players for the 2007 team but have plenty of returners and talented young newcomers to keep the string of 20 win seasons alive. Returning for the Bulldogs are two, three year starters including 2007 GPAC honorable mention selection Dani Hoagland and Kelsey Aff olter as well as the lone senior on the squad Heidi Zoucha.

Th e Bulldogs main hole to fi ll in the 2008 season will be at the setter position. With three freshmen and one sophomore on the roster as setters the Bulldogs will need to rely on one of them to take charge in that role. Debbie Kirchner, a sophomore out of Clarinda, Iowa has the blood line to be a standout as the younger sister of head coach Rachel Miller and will battle with Kaylie Mellema, Karissa Weinrich and Hannah Sikkenga for playing time. Mellema’s height and experience could place her a step ahead of the other freshman.

“Kaylie’s height in the setting position makes running a 5-1 off ense a legit possibility,” said Miller. “Another thing Kaylie brings is her experience of having played a number of the positions on the court.”

Th e Bulldogs must replace their leader in kills for the past two seasons, middle blocker Katie Werner, a fi rst-team All-GPAC pick in 2006 and 2007. Ready to fi ll the hold of Werner’s absence are the Bulldogs most experienced returner: Dani Hoagland. Hoagland is the lone member of the 2008 Bulldogs that garnered honors from the GPAC during the 2007 season as an honorable mention. Freshman Marlee Denton could push for playing time as well in 2008.

Th e Bulldogs most explosive group of returning players is at the outside hitter position. At the end of the 2007 season Alexa Oelke moved into the starting lineup. Senior Heidi Zoucha who will compete with sophomore Lauryn Nyhoff who saw signifi cant action in 2007 and freshman Kelsey Walford for playing time at the other outside hitter position.

Defensively the Bulldogs will be relatively inexperienced as Nicki Axelson (Injured in 2007) and Kirsten Kohlwey (Freshman) battle for playing time as the libero.

In the conference race the Bulldogs were picked to fi nish eighth according to the 2008 GPAC preseason coaches poll. North- western (Iowa) was tabbed to win the conference with Morningside and Hastings also receiving fi rst place votes.

“Year after year the GPAC is tough, and it is no diff erent this year,” Miller said. “I believe that we can compete for one of the top six spots in the conference.”

Concordia should see a host of talented teams during tournaments early in the season. Th e Bulldogs will compete in three diff er- ent tournaments, the Red Raider Classic in Orange City, Iowa, the Bronco Invitational in Hastings, Neb., and the Bellevue University Tournament in Bellevue, Neb.

Th e Bulldogs open the season with Mayville State, before taking on Valley City State, Grand View State, and Black Hills State all in one weekend at the Red Raider Classic August 29-30.

Concordia University, Nebraska announced that Katie Werner was named as Concordia’s female athlete of the year for 2007-08. During her career at Concordia University, Werner was a standout in both volleyball and track, rewrote multiple school records and collected nu- merous awards. Werner was one of the most dominate middle blockers in the GPAC. Even though most teams specifi cally prepared to counter her, Werner nevertheless topped the GPAC in kills and blocks. In track she established herself as one of the premier female throwers in Concordia athletic history over the past four seasons. Werner was a four-time all-GPAC selection, three time NAIA All-Re- gion III selection, as well as being the team’s most valuable player. During her career she was named to 9 diff erent all-tournament teams, she was the GPAC player of the week multiple times and was a two-time NAIA scholar athlete. During her volleyball career she set three individual records: best at- tack percentage in a single season (35.6% in the 2006 season); most blocks in one match (17 in a match in 2004); and most blocks in a career (793). In track she is the current record holder in the indoor shot put and is second on the outdoor shot put list. Werner currently is second on the all-time list for the indoor weight throw and third in the outdoor hammer throw. She has been a two-time NAIA All-American and a three-time NAIA Scholar Athlete. For her career Werner was a GPAC champion in the shot put and competed at the NAIA national championship meet six times.
