Nine meetings versus preseason top-25 teams in 2019 is second only to Duke’s 8/17/12 MIAMI L 1-4 10. Add in Florida’s preseason exhibition versus No. 23 Wake Forest (3-2 loss) and the Gators have 10 8/23/13 FGCU W 3-1 meetings versus preseason top 25 teams. Four of Florida’s first five matches were versus top-25 teams 8/22/14 MIAMI W 3-0 – equaling Santa Clara for the nation’s highest number of preseason opponents in that span. Five SEC 8/30/15 No. 1 FLORIDA STATE W 3-2 programs appear among the preseason top 25, with four additional programs receiving votes. 8/19/16 IOWA STATE W 5-2 8/20/17 TROY W 5-0 is among the 13 NCAA Division I players this fall who were on 2019 FIFA Women’s 8/17/18 WASHINGTON W 2-1 World Cup rosters. Rose appeared in Canada’s 1-0 win over Cameroon to open group play. She is one of four with Gator ties to appear in 2019 World Cup play, joining UF alumnae (Canada), Lauren Silver (Jamaica) and Havana Solaun (Jamaica). Another Gator played for her national team this summer. Sophomore Georgia Eaton-Collins was part of England’s European Football Associations (UEFA) Under-19 Finals in Scotland, playing the entirety of the three group stage matches.

Florida and UCF’s 2018 meeting in Orlando started with 45 minutes played on Sept. 9, but lightning forced the match to be abandoned with UCF leading 3-0. The two teams met again the next afternoon, with UCF taking a 3-0 win. UCF returns Zandy Soree this season, who scored a goal in each half of the 2018 meeting. Stefanie Sanders finished the scoring in the 72nd minute. It was UCF’s first win over the Gators since 2011 NCAA First Round action.

UCF is looking for its first win of 2019. In its last match a week ago at George Mason, the Knights and the Patriots played to a 2-2 double overtime tie. UCF opened the season with a pair of home matches versus Big Ten opponents – Wisconsin (Aug. 22 – 1-0 loss) and Ohio State (1-1 2OT). Three Knights have scored in 2019 – Dayana Martin (at GMU), Kristen Scott (at GMU) and Jessica Taylor (vs OSU). UCF is the fourth consecutive Florida opponent with a player who participated in the 2019 World Cup. UCF defender Konya Plummer played the entirety of each of Jamaica’s three World Cup matches.

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Gators needed extended minutes to claim its season opener Friday at Florida TAMPA, Fla. – Ranked opponent. Record crowd. Atlantic. Junior Deanne Rose hit the golden winner in the 96th minute to give the Gators a 3-2 overtime win over Florida Atlantic. The Gators soccer team calmly handled those extras tonight, registering a 2-0 win over No. 18 South Florida

Friday’s scoring: Sunday evening in front of a Bulls women’s soccer record crowd of 2,011. Florida Atlantic scored the only goal of the opening half in the 18th minute. The Owls used four passes to bring the ball from midway in their defensive half to find Pernille Velta. She received the ball at the top of the Gator Sunday’s scoring: defensive third and drove toward goal to score on a 15-yard right-footed shot. After a scoreless opening half, Deanne Rose received the ball at the top of the Bulls defensive third. Rose used her speed to create space as she moved left. Four minutes later, FSU tied the match. Florida goalkeeper Susi Espinoza was looking for an offsides call that Round never came and FSU’s Katie McFarland scored on an empty net in the 57th minute.

The go-ahead goal came in the 71st minute when FSU’s Yujie Zhao used her right foot to volley in the cross from Jaelin Howell.

In the 79th minute, the center official asked for a video review after FSU goalkeeper Caroline Jeffers collided with Gator freshman Laney Steed. After the review, Jeffers left the match with a red card, forcing the Seminoles to play the final 10 minutes with 10 players. Florida was awarded a penalty kick on the play. FSU’s replacement goalkeeper Brooke Bollinger made the save on Parker Robert’s penalty kick attempt.

Worth Noting  Tonight’s goal was the third for Sapone. She’s scored a goal in the 2017, 2018 and now 2019 seasons.  For the second consecutive season, a team in the UF-FSU match had to play a man down after a red card. In the 2018 1-0 Seminole win, Florida played the final 23 minutes with 10 players after then senior Laís Araujo received her second yellow card. Tonight, the Seminoles played the final 10 minutes a man down after their starting goalkeeper received a red card.  This match ends Florida’s longest season-opening road stretch in the program’s 25-year history. Included in this road journey were four consecutive matches versus teams ranked in the United Soccer Coaches preseason top 25 – No. 18 South Florida (W, 2-0), No. 5 Southern California (L, 3-1), No. 4 UCLA (L, 2-0) and No. 1 Florida State (L, 2-1). Florida is the nation’s only team to face four ranked teams on the road in the opening five matches.
