Seeding Change. Cultivating Leaders. Growing Movements. Crossroads Fund

Twenty-five years ago, a group of young people made a commitment to tackle the many forms of inequality existing in their own back yards. To trust that community-led efforts would pay off with big change. Twenty-five years ago, those young people formed the Crossroads Fund, and established a community board to give out our first grant. Since that time, Crossroads Fund has been an important resource for myriad social justice movements in Chicago — small groups with big ideas that deepen, gain momentum, and expand to have an impact on us all.

We have spent the past year looking at the work of our grantees and at our contribution as a community fund over 25 years. Looking back, there are many reasons to be proud — a tenants bill of rights; a moratorium on the death penalty in ; increased accessibility on the CTA; the day laborer ordinance, to name just a few successes. Crossroads Fund still has a community board that is as strong and diverse today as it was in when it was founded. And, we continue our history of collaborating with donors of all stripes — large and small, individual and institutional — pooling resources, creating innovative funding partnerships, all in order to reach the broadest possible swath of groups working for social change.

We have enjoyed and learned from looking back over our rich history as an alternative community foundation — we hope that you have as much fun as we have as you peruse the historical photographs in this report.

We are even more excited to be looking forward. In these pages you will learn about the largest gift that Crossroads Fund has ever received, a gift earmarked to help strengthen our grantmaking efforts, now and in the future. Because 25 years is really a short time in the history of movements for racial, economic, and social justice — there is still so much to do, as big ideas are constantly emerging from small places close to home. Thanks for your support of all the work – past, present and future.

With warm regards,

Bill Barclay Lisa Marie Pickens Jeanne Kracher Board Co-Chair Board Co-Chair Executive Director

ANNUAL REPORT Page 2 2007 Grants Awarded IMPACT Crossroads Fund is a grantmaking body. Our Seed Fund, Donor Advised Program, Technical Assistance Fund, and Emergency Fund work in concert to ensure support for a variety of groups striving for social and economic justice. This year, we were proud to offer an additional grantmaking program, the Media Justice Fund. We also hosted a giving circle, the Fire This Time Fund. In the following list, grantees are categorized based on one primary focus of their work. For full descriptions of our grantees, please visit our website, www.crossroadsfund.org/NEWGRANTS.html

2007 Grants Programs Seed Fund (Seed) This is where it begins. Seed Fund grantees are emerging, risk-taking grassroots groups with innovative strategies for creating change. They are led by people whose voices have often not been heard, in communities that often go unnoticed. They address complex and challenging issues and practice new working models. Support from Crossroads Fund is a stepping stone to help groups create lasting change throughout Chicago and beyond.

Donor Advised (DA) Donor advised giving allows donors with substantial resources to support grassroots organizations in the Chicago area, with the guidance and support of the board of directors and staff of Crossroads Fund. Our rich history and experience, combined with donor resources, serve as a strategic giving program that is a catalyst for change.

GRAM Fund (DA-GRAM Fund) Our largest donor advised fund supports women and girls, rights for Arab Americans and innovative youth projects.

Fire This Time Fund (FTT) Giving circles provide a unique opportunity for donors to pool their resources and make grantmaking decisions as a community. The Fire This Time uses this model to support groups as innovative as they are, with an emphasis on groups of artists, activists, and educators.

Media Justice Fund (MJF) Using media effectively is critical for social justice movements. This fund is a special initiative of the Funding Exchange and the Ford Foundation, to support groups in their efforts to work on issues of access, ownership, control, and the creation of alternative media.

Technical Assistance Fund (TA) Building a solid infrastructure is critical for any social justice organization in order to create measurable and sustainable change. Technical Assistance grants support organizational development needs such as evaluation, technology, and training.

Emergency Fund (EM) It often takes a small amount of money, fast, to effectively respond to breaking news, mobilize around a sudden development, or take advantage of an unexpected opportunity. This fund provides quick support at a critical time.

ANNUAL REPORT to the WE-ACTx Rwanda project. Page 6 Past, Present, and Future of Affordable Housing In our 25 year history Crossroads Fund has supported many community housing groups, but issues surrounding safe, affordable housing persist. We continue to witness the decline of affordable housing, slumlords, and disempowerment of tenants. In the early years, Crossroads Fund supported the Metropolitan Tenants Organization; this year, we supported grantees to attend the U.S. Social Forum, which brought together a new generation of individuals using strategies to achieve equitable housing for all.

Metropolitan Tenants Organization In November of 1986, after a 5 year campaign of community and citywide organizations led by the Metropolitan Tenants Organization (MTO) and with the support of the late Mayor , the Tenants Bill of Rights ordinance passed Chicago’s City Council. Through this Bill, tenants acquired the right to demand better rental conditions, protection from unfair rental practices, and an avenue to challenge slumlords. MTO continues working with tenants to increase affordable housing, have greater control of condo conversions and to fight HUD policies that do not maintain affordable housing for low income tenants.

“Housing should be considered in a larger context that touches on crime, employment opportunity, quality education access, etc. and not as an isolated issue. Real change in housing policy can be achieved when this happens and when issues are addressed at a systemic level.” — John Bartlett, Executive Director MTO

Grantees Attend the U.S. Social Forum Chicago, like most urban U.S. cities, has witnessed massive displacement of low income people of color at an alarming rate due to sky-rocketing rents, condo conversions, mass evictions, and low wage jobs. Crossroads Fund was able to support a Chicago contingent to the U.S. Social Forum this last summer. Grantees in the contingent included; Southside Together Organizing for Power (STOP), Southwest Youth Collaborative, Access Living, Adapt, and Coalition to Protect Public Housing, among others. These organizations are composed of residents from public housing, tenants from HUD subsidized housing, seniors, individuals with disabilities and youth with limited means. Our grantees, together with groups from across the country, used the US Social Forum as an opportunity to share strategies and to strengthen a national housing movement that secures poor people’s fundamental right to reside in urban America.

ANNUAL REPORT Page 7 Giving Circles Allow Donors to Pool Resources and Make Grantmaking Decisions

Crossroads Fund offers a variety of opportunities for individuals and groups to pool resources for social change. Giving circles provide a way for donors to join efforts, raise money, and make decisions about spending that money, with the guidance and support of Crossroads Fund.

In summer of 2006 a group of independent artists, educators, and activists got together with the intention of pooling their resources to support creative social change projects initiated by artists, educators and activists who are committed to community-based social and political change. Inspired by James Baldwin, the group named itself The Fire This Time, in homage to Baldwin’s book, The Fire Next Time. Members of the Fire This Time. Left to right: Shinae Yoon, Cristal Sabbagh, Mollie Dowling, Annie Knepler, Kristen Cox, Cat Jefcoat, Naomi Walker, The Fire This Time looks for new, Bonnie Wade. They have a particular interest in channeling project-based funds to informal groups working in atypical ways, inside and outside of the non-profit model, without access or ties to extensive institutional support. They are particularly interested in funding creative art practices and community organizing and education projects. They began meeting in fall of 2006, and made their first round of grantmaking decisions this year. Eleven projects were given a grant of $1,000 each.

“We feel blessed to learn about all these inspiring groups and individuals doing such amazing work. We feel less hopeless about the state of the world. Giving circles truly represent the power of community. In collectively pooling our resources, we are able to facilitate work that makes our community a better place. Spread the wealth! Pool the chump change!

Working with Crossroads Fund is like pulling the coat of the guru. It has been intimidating at times to face the prospect of giving, particularly when so many of us in Fire This Time Fund are more accustomed to being on the other side of the table. We are so fortunate to get the guidance, advice and counsel of folks at Crossroads.”

— Fire This Time Committee Members

ANNUAL REPORT Page 8 Fire This Time Fund Grantee: None on Record

None on Record: Stories of Queer Africa collects the stories of Africans from the continent and within diasporic communities that identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered. None on Record has recorded seven audio stories within North America, representing five African countries, six ethnic tribes and four tribal languages, and has plans to visit South Africa. None on Record adds to the growing body of histories being told by and about queer Africans all over the world. LGBT Africans are everywhere--within the neighborhoods of Dakar, Chicago, Nairobi, Toronto, City, and London and in the small towns and villages of African countries.

"Fire This Time was the first grant we received for our work of creating media that focuses on the lives of LGBT Africans. It was the beginning of community support and affirmed that None on Record would survive and grow into a sustainable project. As None on Record has traveled from the U.S. to Canada to South Africa, places where isolation and invisibility, as well as courage and close knit communities are how LGBT Africans are surviving, we know this work would not be possible without our beginnings and without Fire This Time. This funding group took a chance on a project started by young media makers in Chicago and lead to the creation of a web-based archive, None on Record Project Director Selly Thiam interviewing anthology and full-length audio documentary. We Nigerian poet Yvonne Onakeme Etaghene, Harlem, NY. are far from equity in the lives of LGBT people on the African continent and abroad but None on Record is part of this social change movement and therefore so is Fire This Time."

Since our founding in 1981, Crossroads Fund has been governed by a Board of Directors who comes from communities all over Chicago. The Board of Directors of Crossroads Fund is a place where people from different communities, concerns, and identities come together to share strategies and make decisions that help create more resources and visibility for social change issues.

“Since becoming active with the Crossroads Fund, I've become both a donor and volunteer. With the number of social and economic issues not being addressed by traditional philanthropy, I’m glad to have found a group of people dedicated to real systems change. Crossroads Fund’s focus on providing not only funding, but opening dialogue with various members of the community keeps generating new ideas and new approaches to dealing with injustice.”

ANNUAL REPORT Page 15 A Landmark Gift for a Landmark Anniversary

During the course of celebrating our 25th Anniversary, Crossroads Fund passed another amazing milestone — we received our first million dollar gift! In June of 2007, the Synapses Foundation, a private foundation based in Chicago, dissolved and rolled its assets, totaling $1.1 million, into the Crossroads Fund, as the seed of an endowment.

The Synapses Foundation was founded by Chicago activist Don Erickson. Don taught geography, history and social studies at Calumet High School. He was also a committed activist for social justice, working to end human rights violations across the globe. He had a particular interest in ending U.S. corporate support of the military regime in Burma. Don was also an avid supporter of the group, Christian Peacemakers Teams, and specified that the Synapses Foundation continue to fund that organization for as long as they exist.

Crossroads Fund is grateful to receive this gift, and honored to remember Don and his work for social change. The bulk of the money will become an endowment for the Crossroads Synapses Founder Don Erickson leafleting for the Fund, and an annual payout will go to support rights of people in Burma. grantmaking. In line with Don’s wishes, part of the payout every year will go to the Christian Peacemakers Teams. In addition, Don was interested in political sketch comedy, and we will use part of the money to promote those efforts.

ANNUAL REPORT Page 16 Thank You Every year, Crossroads Fund must raise every single dollar that we give away. We are a public, community foundation in the truest sense of the word. Our community contributes to support the core of our programs in grantmaking and technical assistance. THANK YOU to our incredibly generous community of donors. YOU are the ones who make it all happen.

Please join us as we continue to support grassroots activism and change in the years ahead. Our apologies if any errors were made in the compilation of this list.
